- A demonstration of drawing and painting a Winter Night farm scene in pen and wash watercolour.

MATERIALS:
PEN: The Uni-ball deluxe micron roller ball pen .5mm nib. These pens are extremely waterproof on my papers and can be painted over immediately. The roller ball is almost indestructable and claims to be archival.
BRUSH: A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush is my current favorite. The bristle were originally white but have become stained.
I often use inexpensive brushes because several of my techniques are quite abusive.
Whenever the brush disappears from the screen it is either being wiped off or rinsed.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 140lb Cold Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.

I have just started in watercolors here in Dec 22 at age 81. I have to say I have been more successful with your drawings that anyone else. I love this style it suits me and I can actually do it where as before this I could not draw a duck. Thank you for the tutorials you put out I am getting so much out of them.

I mostly paint in Acrylic but have been trying to improve on my watercolor skill (if I have any). Anyway, just tonight ran across your videos and tried to paint along with you. Of course being red-green colour blind doesn't help. I could carry on painting tree trunks green and the leaves brown (as I see the colours) and call it artistic licence but thanks to you showing what colours to use and, importantly, how to mix them is such a help. Thank you again.

I am an architect.....i also do photography from time to time. I loved sketching from a very early age which led me to take up architecture...which helped me learn photography. i sketched in black and white and i got a sense of colour and light by doing photography but i could never use colours in my sketches. your videos have helped me bridge the gap. Fantastic work. Huge fan.

I just watched this video - my first - and I'm in absolute awe of your sketching ability! You make it look so easy! I watched it a second time and stopped after every stroke of your pen and tried to duplicate what you did. Mine's not half as good as yours, but it's a hundred times better than what I could have done on my own! thank you for this incredibly valuable video! Nice warm painting. I like pen and wash. I do Watercolor, But can't draw to well. I was watching another Artist when I saw your painting on the side. So beautifu... .I have no words .I relly like your style the light, the colours you use .You know when there is a very nise painting but its like u can't watch it very long becouse you don't like the colours well its the oposite with yours I can watch it for hours .Great job.

I agree with Deborah below in that since I have been following you I too find that loosening up while drawing my work is so much better, I would never have believed it but it is.I certainly held my pen far too tight before and it showed up in my work and it took me for ever to do a drawing which never turned out well .
