You cannot read this without putting pictures to every line. Each time I read it, (hundreds of times) new pictures fill in the visual void. His words are as true today as they were 110 years ago. However, the critics of today want us to believe that they are in the arena and not us.
I watch this video over and over when I've had my ass kicked in the arena and feeling bloody and mangled. Each time I watch it, I cry! I realize in that failing at least I was being brave and taking a chance.

I changed the gender to Woman in the Arena, printed and framed because I am currently in the arena. And I wholeheartedly agree with her... if you're not getting your a** kicked fighting for something then I don't even care about your feedback about my efforts.

The quote is simply saying that those who try are never subject to the criticism of those who watch. T.R. gave further example of this by mentioning the "triumph of high achievement" aka, competition. Triumph over who, triumph over what? We are talking about success or failure. So, competition matters, winning or losing matters. But the worst thing of all are "cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat" aka people who say "it's not about winning or losing...."
I understand the quote and what is meant by it. BUT...lol...it's still confusing for me. For those who are in the arena, WHY do you keep asking for feedback from those who aren't in the arena? I've been in this situation a lot. It's as if some of the people in the arena, can't get enough recognition so they seek it everywhere. They ask for opinions from people outside of the arena and then get disappointed when the feedback doesn't suit them.

The spectator just needs to understand that they will always hold fewer pieces of the puzzle than the person on the ground, and should relay their feedback in that context. They *might* have a piece or two that the person in the arena hasn't seen, but the person in the arena surely has dozens of pieces that the spectator will never grasp.
I totally think Brene' would agree with that. She is simply making the point that we can't go through life focusing on the opinions of those that are throwing insults and criticisms from the cheap seats. We ALL have those people in our lives that do that. She is not saying that you can't take a bit of wisdom from a benevolent and kind person who made an observation and wants to help.
