Much of this is accurate, but the picture of a person "meditating" on a couch at 5:19 is totally misleading. That person is not sitting in a posture that any Zen practitioner would recognize. In every Zen tradition, the sitting posture involves elevating the buttocks above the knees so that the spine is straight and folding the hands together near the bellybutton. This is not some minor thing: the posture makes a difference, as it affects your breathing and attention. Some Zen masters (especially Dogen) would say that the sitting posture is *itself* enlightenment. Proper sitting posture is essential to reaping the benefits of Zen meditation, and what this video displays is NOT proper sitting posture.

The actual sitting is the most important part. How we sit is a method to increase the time that you can comfortably meditate. I don’t know where all of these videos about zen try to present it as not a religion and that rituals and rites play no part. Zen teaches the same cosmology as any other sect of Buddhism aside from the secular Buddhists in the west. Zen teaches the karmic rebirth of the 6 realms of existence that a being is reborn into before they escape samsara. Chan/Seon/Thien/Zen is very ritualistic. Ritual, rites and chanting all play an important role in zen. You’re all regurgitating the same nonsense. Step foot into a temple or zen center and experience it first hand before spewing nonsense like this.
I practice zen for about 13 years and not even once my master mentioned rebirth, karma, or anything related to that. I guess there are a lot of Zen styles. I tend to believe that zen focuses far less on rituals and writen teachings, and much more in practice of zazen. Even though when we practice in the zendo we chant the heart sutra and all of that. Shunryu Suzuki said maybe zen it´s not a religion, since it doesn´t depend in dogma o doesn´t talk about god... or maybe it´s a religion previous to religion ;)
@@ElFerna182 Zen is a generic term in the west for Chan. Chan spread from China to Korea (where it became seon) and Vietnam (where it became known as thien). Are they necessary to for one to practice chan/zen? Absolutely not. But to make an assertion that it’s rituals aren’t important and play no part is ludicrous.
@Vishnu Nandode Buddha made Buddhism from non Buddhist concepts. And Jesus was an enlightened man. Even with the tool of modern sciences, we are opening the 'black box', trying to understand, but never going to comprehend. Zen (jhāna) is really nothing more than the path Siddhartha took to become a "Buddha" which is a path of intuition that culminates in awakening to the unconditioned. In this regard it completely transcends the human being reaching back to the very source of all things which is not a thing. To fully understand where Zen is coming from one must intuit what Siddhartha did. Those who imitate Zen without Siddhartha's attainment are nothing more than fools.

From Korea it spread to Japan and this is where the zen pronunciation came from. In all of these countries where chan is practiced ritual is important and practiced daily. Are they necessary to for one to practice chan/zen? Absolutely not. But to make an assertion that it’s rituals aren’t important and play no part is ludicrous.
Love it
I love zen :) i love finding awareness
are we gonna talk about how they said to KILL the buddha ?
I mean if u look at the explanations on it it’s clear it’s necessary for zen practice
The Buddha will then achieve nirvana
I can understand -- that statement does sound violent but it is an expression that means you don't need to rely on a teacher for enlightenment.
@Vishnu Nandode Buddha made Buddhism from non Buddhist concepts. And Jesus was an enlightened man. But u must must kill the image of the Buddha and realise that u are Buddha and when u see images without images u see Buddha, u see your very nature. Some may ask why in Buddhist practice does one worship and bow and chant in front of a Buddha statue, well it's not the Buddha statue that's creating the dilluded image,it is your mind. Cleanse your mind from this way of thinking and u can see the Buddha statue as not just shayamuni himself but U and U are everything, that is 아미토불 (amitobu) vast Buddha as your mind and nature are the particles of everything.
Realise the true nature of this reality - here and now
I would add that the sense of “me” is a product of millions of years of evolution.
Zen in its core is ineffable and this is why it is usually considered to be mysticism. Though, as the video said, there are other ways in which people understand the word mysticism.
Zen is everything abt the Universe, but Zen is unexplorable just like the universe - for the nature that human will never be able to understand the universe. Even with the tool of modern sciences, we are opening the 'black box', trying to understand, but never going to comprehend. Zen is a mirror of the world and a sense of inclusion for nature and all living things, It's inherently contradicting like the entanglement.. it's making clear of things without even trying to understand wow..
@@starfishxxl229 I like what you say... yes, don't try and understand, just accept a sort of unspoken revelation about things, perhaps and a sense of merging... and chilling. What is, is...
A very good job overall. However, out of thousands of images and seques, the example chosen for seated meditation was a photobomb of a young middle-class white girl (bald on a couch, with makeup). Such a trite new-agey example. Or, as was done well, more inclusive rather than less in Fr. David Standl-Rasts' excellent UA-cam, "A Good Day" where someone managed to drop out the lovely, memorable photo of two monks bowing to each other in Upaya's zen monastery kitchen. . So only 8o%. Interesting
actually chan and zen is corrupted sanskrit word for dhyan which is a sort of yoga and meditative practices practised by all ancient relgions of india .
Yes, they mentioned that
Did you say Jojo?
Pretty cool thanks m8
Zen (jhāna) is really nothing more than the path Siddhartha took to become a "Buddha" which is a path of intuition that culminates in awakening to the unconditioned. In this regard it completely transcends the human being reaching back to the very source of all things which is not a thing. To fully understand where Zen is coming from one must intuit what Siddhartha did. Those who imitate Zen without Siddhartha's attainment are nothing more than fools.
Why my perspective?
No, that is the wrong question.
Respect your Nature.

Burn buddha? Are they in their right minds?
They did not burn buddha. They burned a wooden statue for warmth.
What a glorious example of functional illiteracy. Creepy.
It sounds much closer to Daoism than Buddhism
Zen arose when Buddhism from Indian made contact with Taoism in China.

Advaita Vedanta philosophy...
Keep your hypocrite discriminatory fake superstitious cult name Buddhism to yourself 😂😂😂
True... Most of the good philosophies are born out of hinduism... Santana Dharma...
the japanese word Zen came from the Chinese word Chen which came from indian word jana...
Yoga and meditation existed in hinduism even before buddha was born... Since ancient times...
@@adityashukla517 Zen should be classified as Taoism rather than Buddhism, Because this is the taoist chemistry of buddhism ~
