I need Zen in my life after all the loss I’ve dealt with the last three years. I lost my sense of purpose, direction and reason to be. Something is speaking to me and telling me to seek this out, that practicing Buddhism is the next chapter of my journey
Hey Man, friendly advice here, try to incorporate Zen meditation, detachment and self-love in your life. if you can fit those 3 things you will find your own purpose your why. Everything will clear up by itself
Good video. You don’t need to practice zazen all the time, there is also “ karma “ meditation. Karma means action , and a walk in the forest without thinking is all you need. Be absolutely still in your mind, and move about..listening and looking but not naming nor overthinking...just being. After a while, you can do this even in a busy city surrounded by others. Walking , but not thinking. Driving a car, without thoughts. Acting on “ what is” spontaneous without deliberation . Still the mind, move the body.
I practiced this much while on my bycicle. I have a job that requires much riding and while i do not liek that job, i become to understood that this practice can be done for many many actions. Even while speaking with a friend or listening to a friend, which i consider the most valuable moments to meditate in.
I have found labeling meditation with different types only goes so far, as a carpenter I find myself meditating while I'm working at times. I suppose it really depends on whatever brings you peace and serenity with a clear mind.

As the great and current American Buddhist monk said in his Monk in the Mountain series, when asked about who we are. He mentioned that he'd been searching for his true self all his life and finally declared that 'there was never anybody here in the first place!'
Zen is certainly a great practice for those who want to be present in the moment and enjoy the life at the fullest. Unfortunately most of us were unaware of the Asian philosophies up till the recent days since we been tough more traditional western philosophy. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Stoicism is western and teaches us to live in the present moment you just haven't looked much to assume that only Eastern philosophies teaches us to be present

Excellent video. I live my life with Zen principles, realizing that means nothing. Realizing the greatest wisdom is to know you know nothing, therefore being present is the only way to exist. What Zen often ignores however is the fact that in the Western World we don't have the pleasure to just live in the now all the time. We have to plan for our future. Things have changed, and that's why Alan Watts was so amazing bringing Zen into a western mindset.
To possibly add some clarity to the phrase : “ ifyou see the Buddha, kill him”. While the video mentions an explanation, the more accepted interpretation in Soto zen is that any external manifestation of the Buddha is a falsehood. The path of a Buddhist is entirely internal - it is from within that we explore.
I came back to this video since I think it deserves more attention. But also I'm actually getting very interested in zen and eastern philosophy in general since I think I've talked to much about stoicism and it has alot of wisdom aswell. Great vid :)
A brief summary of how to practise zen in your daily life is more about being present and decluttering your life of unnecessary things. Some suggestions to practice zen is meditation and there's various of ways to meditate, another one is practice mindfulness by being present in the moment, and going out in nature is also beneficial to be zen. Appreciate the life you have because we're here for a reason not the other way around. Its almost like we have purpose and mission here on earth in this lifetime.
In this video the main question is asked, 'Who am I?' I watched the American Buddhist monk's Monk in the Mountain series Parts 1 to 6. Towards the end of Part 6, he was asked the question, 'who are you?' To which replied, 'I've been searching for 45 years as a monk and couldn't find anybody, because there was never anybody here in the first place!'.
Before meditating, bust out a journal or, notebook. Write down what you are thinking and sooner or, later, your thoughts will be less frequent. I have a little notebook that I write down my thoughts in and can fill pages before I have an emptied mind.
Think about your thoughts as noise. And treat them like listening to music not paying attention to the thought just letting flow in and out of your mind.
basically it means kill your idea of buddha, because if you have an idea about something you cant look at it for what it truly is. And also if you have an idea about something it could be something completely different...
I have found that doing zazen has helped me get out of the personal narrative and spend more time in my day just interacting in real time with people and things. It is so refreshing to let go of the script and just relate to my experiences as they happen. However I would be careful of ignoring your shadow side like the video mentions regarding the teaching of Carl Jung. Even top Zen priests and masters have had major downfalls by ignoring the shadow parts of their personality. We are a product of our cultural DNA just as we are products of our actual DNA - but zazen gives you an opportunity to process with your whole body and mind the emotions unquestioned perceptions and beliefs carried over from childhood. I think Zen in combination with seeing a good therapist is very helpful. Zen (the word) is a Japanese translation of the word Chan (chinese) which is a translation of the Indian word dhyana which means "meditate". "Zen Mind Beginners Mind" by Shunryu Suzuki is a good book for understanding Zen. Good luck with your journey!
Don't want to appear nitpicking but in Vietnam, Mahayana Buddhism is very much more popular than Theravada Buddhism. I am living in the country and practicing Zen meditation although from a different school. Other than that I really like the video

Does practice zen equal being passive? As they said, i observes things to the detail, like i dont know what it is then continue to approach it, every moment, jump from things to things. Its like describing thing to myself. But eventually i do nothing, just sitting or standing looking/hearing/smelling at it. How can i live like that all day? The only thing i get is at the end of the day i can remember vividly things i have approach (to its detail) but do nothing to it
Zen is not passive. Zen is alive and active. Zen is not controlling. Zen is like flowing water. Zen does not try to get it. There is nothing to get. Zen does not try to look at, hear or smell it. Looking is it. Hearing is it. Smelling is it.
Just See without adding a mental overlay on experience. Is your mind leaning? Beware of attaching to zazen as a method. You can practice zen in every moment.
Meditation is fundamentally to be natural as if never corrupted throughout growth maturity and development. To be natural is to have no mind or to be free from the hypnosis by mind. When you are able to be without mind or mental activities you approach every moment of life and actions with a beginner's mind and a spirit of original explorer. Through meditation you restore and connect to your state of healthy infancy. Meditation connects you to the great force of nature and life which is a great pleasure and meaning in itself.

In my personal experience to ponder who am I? it is necessary to have a base. This base is made of the following elements; 1. You have to have a tremendous curiosity about this topic, something that have popped up many times in your mind. 2. You have to have survival assured (roof, food, water, clothing, hence the apearance of temples) for a long period of time, and be mentally healthy. 3. You have to be very intelligent (not necessarely educated) and intuitive. 4. It is a must to be alone, not near family, kids, no every day contact with friends, and that your friends share your interests. Girlfriend visiting you on the weekends OK! 5. No phones, no internet no Tv near you, no drugs (tobacco OK!) no distractions. There is no assurance or guarantee that you can answer WHO AM I? The answer does not come in the form of words, but as an ineffable experience called kensho (Japanese term that literaly means "seeing your own nature"), that has nothing to do with words, ideas or imagination. The best of the lucks to you!

It is easy for me to be calm and enjoy life. I live in country where I don't have to worry much. It is safe here. We have direct democracy, health care for everyone and a stable government. The air is fresh and the streets are clean. Education is almost free and if I lose my job my government will take care of me. But how can someone in a country who has not this insurance get to the point of Zen?
What you describe is not what is written in the zen manuals, nor is it what the masters who's photos you use, advocated. "Sitting-meditative state", or "Shikan Taza" is not to make an effort of any kind - but to drop the 'person' making the effort.
Good video and good info here and there but, as a zen buddhist practitioner myself, I have to be honest: if you think the main question Zen is trying to answer is about who we really are, you missed the whole point !! You might be mixing mindfulness with Zen teachings...

I feel you! I find it easier to sleep when I do "switch off" my mind for a while during the day, the thoughts come less to haunt me in the night!
