    Philosophical Taoism, Philosophical Buddhism, and Epicureanism are where I find the most guiding values for my life. They are simple and developed independently in very different cultures. I identify with them not because they are divinely revealed, but because they don't need to be for it to make sense.

    • @Shaolin-Jesus
      @Shaolin-Jesus 3 роки тому

      that being said, are they not divine in essence simply becuase they are objectivey true. essentially making them 'eternal principes' as such knowedgle does not grow old or become obsolete.

    Epicurus - what the counter culture should have become. Very much historically misunderstood even by the great Shakespeare. Thanks for making the video, a most Epicurean pleasure!

    Wow! I’ve been an Epicurean in the ancient sense for at least a decade and was not aware of it. Became an atheist in the recent past but reveled in the beauty of the moment for about a decade. Much happier now than I have ever been.

      Kat Derwey Epicuris was a cool dude. I always liked his philosophy. I think of it like:
      Sure, have fun. That's what life's all about. When you're dead, it's all over - no second try. So really enjoy this chance at life. BUT (and here's the big thing) don't overdo it. Go out and have a couple of drinks, but don't drink until you puke.

      I also revel in the beauty of the moment in an Epicurean way. I loved reading your reply. I also am an Epicurean and live a very simple, very happy existence and I was so glad to know that also someone did, centuries ago also. I think it is because Nature is STILL the same, in all Her glory and the few of us who recognize Her beauty, can live in a very simply way. I do. If you would like to converse with another Epicurean, please write kaiventwospirit@gmail.com.

      I find it interesting that one respondent here insists that ridding the world of Communism is the necessary step for humanity, while another suggests ending Capitalism is the sine non qua.
      Guys, Epicureanism * isn't * an economic system and clearly from your polar-opposite visions, offers no obvious economic prescriptions.
      What is needed for Epicurianism is a stable, open society and the opportunity for leisure. If we want the greatest possible number of people to participate, affording everyone those two prerequisites must be prioritized. So far, I think neither Communism nor Capitalism has done the greatest job of securing these things for everyone, at least not over the long term.

    Beautiful. I've done a poor job of this for the most part but at least I know that. In a world that is now or maybe always has been IMO pretty insane it's a beautiful thing to think that not everyone was/is insane. I guess I'm pretty insane, not one of the sane and happy ones although I've had some moments of sanity. Especially in mid life. Good to know the real sane are out there somewhere though. You rock Epicurus wherever you are.

  • @shahabghadiri926
    @shahabghadiri926 6 років тому +8

    The logic mentioned in the video as a refutation of God is not that of Epicurus. In fact Epicurus was not pro-atheism or even an atheist. Today we may claim his ideas necessitate atheism as a logical and practical consequence. Lucretius was more militant toward religion, per se. But it's recorded that Epicurus himself visited temples of the gods and attended some religious rituals. He believed in their existence, though he reject them as having any connection to our world.

    • @EyeLean5280
      @EyeLean5280 5 років тому +1

      Lucretius was definitely against religion, though. He thought the gods might exist but that it is vanity to attempt to propitiate or call upon them. Irrelevantism may not be atheism per se, but it's not too many steps away from it.

    Do you think epicurius would have been happy with koko learning sign language. I think he would be over the moon that literally every other creature in the world other than humans didn’t believe in an afterlife, I’m just assuming that was what koko meant when she said animals “go to a comfortable hole” when asked where they go when they die.

    This seems to say the only, or main source of unhappiness is to do with selfish stuff,
    while for a lot of us it is injustices and cruelties to others (including to animals) which causes it.

    • @kaivenfenton
      @kaivenfenton 6 років тому

      I believe it includes not doing injustices and cruelties to others, including to animals. I live the way Epicurus did and living this way automatically, innately and naturally includes the above that I said. It sort of doesn't need to be stated because it is in our Nature. We respect Nature and all Her glory which includes all other life.

    • @miked8116
      @miked8116 6 років тому

      I gave it a thumbs down because epicurus did not promote romantic relationships. He said they were too emotionally volatile and you should stick with friendship. They do not convey that in this video. They say you should indulge will they show video of people making out. But it's not the teachings of epicurus.

    This is a concise, well edited summation of how to live an Epic life which provides a great forum to observe various mental illnesses--as manifested in the comment--that likely cause the writers much suffering that is unfortunately misattributed to their lack of worth, their parents, or god (or god's ultimate plan.) Know thyself. You deserve to be happy. And it is easily within your reach. Rest assured, if you follow the path that springs not from lust but from the Golden Rule and pursue your pleasures with seriousness you will pardoned by a loving god who would at most be cheerfully amused at your sincere and simple good ways.

      Seems kind of related to gambling addiction when I think about it.
      Not that is is gambling, but I suggest it also (over) stimulates the brains reward center into an addiction like state.
      So you end up always seeking that new high you got when you got something newer and bigger than you had even if it has little actual use for you.

    Evil HAS to exist, it’s the basics of the law of polarity, the opposite of evil - ‘Good’ cannot exist without its polar opposite of evil that enables a graded comparison. If you have never tasted ‘bad’ food how on earth could you know what ‘good’ food is? Without evil you could be in a perfect heaven but you would have no way of knowing it.

    Our life in this world is to lean and be clean only , that is our purpose of our life here on earth. When you were born you don't know any thing and you are clean, meaning no sin. So while you are growing up you need to lean for your life, and when you die you can go back to your creator, that is why you must be clean no sin. Now all what see or you poses here you won't take it with you, just leave it as it is, you cannot take it with you. Just believe in God, listen to the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ to be save! Interesting video, well done. But I think it should be specified that atheism is not really a component of Epicureanism. Also, there is an implication here that Epicurus has something to tell us about economics; I don't think that's realistic.

    • @triggerwarningtruthjustfor5433

      Lee Spaner but replicating DNA itself has to have a purpose, otherwise things would not have such a strong in-built instinct to survive so as to replicate DNA - there would be a reason that DNA is required to be replicated to continue. In a meaningless universe it would not matter that DNA is not replicated and all things cease to be - this is not the case! Everything that is surplus to requirements and no longer needed in nature starts to disappear (e.g. wings on the flightless birds), yet human population is not in decline but growing - the purpose/existence requirement (whatever this is) must therefore still exist.

      Yeah! Pleasure does not have to be a detrimental object to either the mind or body. A simple dish made with love and care is far preferable above something, so to say, spectacular, in an expensive trendy restaurant. Friends and family, of whom you know that "the extra mile" is walked by both them and you are much more desirable than token acquaintances. Or "lip servers". Worse still they are. So Epicurus had a very good point. The pursuit of happiness as a life philosophy. I'm glad you agree.

    The defects of this theory of life are obvious. In the first place, as to the
    matter of fact, experience shows that happiness is not best attained by
    directly seeking it. The selfish are not more happy, but less so, than the
    unselfish. In the next place, the theory altogether destroys virtue as virtue,
    and eliminates the idea and sentiment expressed by the words "ought",
    "duty", "right", and "wrong". Virtue, indeed,
    tends to produce the truest and highest pleasure; all such pleasure, so far as
    it depends upon ourselves, depends upon virtue. But he who practices virtue for
    the sake of the pleasure alone is selfish, not virtuous, and he will never
    enjoy the pleasure, because he has not the virtue.

    "How to be happy without god" is, in reality, a lesson in how to be happy without _hope._ Live for the moment for there is no future. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you die. Nothing in life matters, none of our choices bare consequence, so do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

      I suppose the illusory hope and false consolation you seem to prefer is preferable to being suffocated by hopelessness,
      but the latter is suggestive of a defect of character and attitude, rather than arising from a deficiency of belief.
      What you are suggesting does seem a poor substitute for dealing with the real world in all its authentic richness, variety and unpredictability.

      Is the hopelessness I'm describing simply experiential? An emotional condition? Or is it a perspective derived from a preemptive assumption in the futility of being, and the belief that one's choices cannot meaningfully service any understanding of the good which can also be said to be truthful?
      How one happens to 'cope' with this realization is quite irrelevant to my point; I was contrasting one existential proposition against another. You might be surprised to find that there are nihilists who don't find their claims of human absurdity and fatality to be all that horrific or even pessimistic, but instead, liberating.
