    In this video I'm teaching my friend how to snowboard and how to start linking his snowboard turns together. This is Chris's second day snowboarding and he has so far learned how to skate, get off the chairlift, heel slide, toe slide and do a single snowboard turn. Today the goal is to get Chris linking his snowboard turn so he can turn down the entire run in control. If you have any beginner snowboard questions you can leave them in the comments section. Thanks for watching!

      As weird as it might sound, you feel more balance at higher speeds. Bend your knees (not at the hips) and get lower to the ground as well for more stability!

    The 3 tips that helped me the most as a beginner:
    1. point your front arm in the direction you want to go (this keeps your shoulders stacked over your knees, giving you much better control and smoother turns)
    2. put more weight on your front leg than you think you should, especially when initiating a turn (this keeps you from spinning out and falling on your butt)
    3. go as fast as you can while still feeling somewhat in control (this helps you to make wider, cleaner turns, and it makes you less likely to catch an edge)

    The toughest part of learning for beginners is the speed. They always think they’re going a lot faster than they are. Your friend skis so he doesn’t have that problem. That run you’re teaching him on is too mellow. He can get off the chairlift which means he can do tougher runs. He needs help from the mountain to link turns.

    • @joshyouuuua
      @joshyouuuua 2 роки тому

      Hey, I have this problem on using the mountain to link turns as well. For example when I'm riding heelside perpendicular on the slope and try to go on my toes w/out actually going down and linking into a S turn I eat shit almost all the time, any help?

    • @MSeige
      @MSeige 2 роки тому +2

      @@joshyouuuua you cannot fight the mountain because you will always lose. If you’re riding down heel side, release the pressure off your heels so you point your front foot downhill. Then shift the pressure to your toes. Once you’re on your toes, initiate your shoulders, hips, knees and toes to turn on your toe side.

  • @MckWells
    @MckWells 2 роки тому +15

    One of my biggest tips when helping beginners is to stop on the hill and practice holding your heel edge in a stop and pressing each foot down independently. Kind of like a gas pedal on each foot. If you push down on the left foot, you'll go left, same for the right. Flip around and face uphill on the toe edge and try that with the heels. Having a park board with lots of flex helps understand how the torsion of the board dictates direction.

But your explanations of the basics helped me have a very clear idea of what to do and how to start. I watched this before heading up to teach myself again. Finally linking my turns and feeling more confident! Thank you for this video.
    I would love to hear more about distributing weight between your feet. I feel I have to put most on my front foot to get the board to start going back down hill so I can get from edge to edge, then shift to my back foot to start spraying snow for a turn.

    • @JackOfTrades12
      @JackOfTrades12 2 роки тому

      I found it's more even weight when beginning, and they tell you to put your weight on your front foot to keep the same pitch as the slope when going straight. You shouldn't be spraying or skidding, you should be carving. I found I was skidding in the beginning because I didn't understand that as you go faster, you simply make an edge change before facing down hill. The key is to change edges when your board and sliding direction are all inline. If you change edges when your board i skidding or crooked, you will probably catch an edge. If you think of the turn like a half circle, experienced riders change edges at the top of the circle, not on the side. Also, squat for heel edge, knees to the ground for toe edge. Good luck this season!

    Starting out I just got out on the slopes and fell HARD for about half a day before I really caught on. No training for me whatsoever. Now i'm hitting jumps and doing 180s and 360s pretty comfortably! It really is an easy sport to get a hang of once the basics are down. It also helps having some experience with wakeboarding and surfing.

      Yeah that’s like with me too I started on my own I had friends but they didn’t help me but I could turn and do stuff naturally since I wakeboard and wakesurf in the summer. But honestly I think I’m weird because I could do turns and I did jumps and went to the park the first day within a couple hours. I didn’t do amazing on the jumps but I could do them which I think is decent for only having 3 hours of experience. But everything just came so naturally it was crazy no one believe me it was my first day.

    • @Isaac-vg3ti
      @Isaac-vg3ti 2 роки тому

      When I started my bindings were at a "duckfoot" angle where the toes point away from each other. It's really all preference and how you're comfortable. As you start to get better though the bindings should be more perpendicular to the edges on your board so you have a more balanced stance between using heel and toe edges.

    I'm still fighting with toe edge turn locking into a carve instead of drifting and rotating, least steep slope, almost flat. Sometimes it helps to bend knees more and reach forward with my arms. Can this balance trick develop into a bad habit?

    • @email10jo
      @email10jo 2 роки тому

      (Not a pro but ive been snowboardig a while now)
      Bending the knees more is actually a good habit but your back should more or less stay at a 90 degree angle with your board. So if youre reaching for the snow by bending your back it maybe is a bad habit...
      But than again if you're carving hard you can reach the snow without bending your back so maybe its not that bad 😁
