My sister just went to a cruise to Falmouth Jamaica and she was so so surprised at the high price of food. The food prices are higher than in the US. Rental and mortgages are just as high in Jamaica, just as USA, or even more. I watch the realtor channels in Jamaica every week and am surprised by how expensive rentals, mortgages, and food are.The cheapest place to live right now is Panama. Jamaica is out of control, especially for poor people!!
I live in Trelawny and things are very different here from North America. Yes food prices are high because of tourism (higher demand from hotels than supply) but most Trelawny people can access natural/unprocessed foods from farms or back yards. I personally have a hard time giving away mangoes, june plum and ackees that grow in my yard. It's just too much and they go to waste. We can go to the beach on a Sunday and load up on fresh fish, crab and lobster when the fishermen come in. We can get ground food from people in top Trelawny; yams, sweet potato etc, Don't judge our lifestyle by what you see on the surface, there is nobody going hungry here. Tourism is booming and people are doing well. People who live in developed countries tend to judge how others are doing based on how their own societies are organized, but they are missing so much because they don't understand how it is when you co-exist with nature and everything doesn't come from a supermarket. Don't think that because you don't see amazing infrastructure that everyone is poor and suffering, many are living a much better lifestyle in terms of their access to beautiful beaches, mountains, rivers and nature in general, than people abroad.

If you are saving for a property what the property might cost today is going to be more in a year, So it’s best to add at least 10-20 percent on what the figure would be today. Also It’s not that the developer is saying well I have a demand for these property last time but their is a thing call inflation.

Sir, most people in Jamaica have a yard where they can plant tomatoes, limes. Bell Peppers, fruits, etc. I can get limes for 25 cent each. You can get broccoli for less than 2 dollars. Other veggies and fruits are inexpensive and taes are not paid on produce. At least where I live. The east coast like New York is costly.

Jamaican living in Toronto. Ja was unbearable when I was there 4 yrs ago. Food prices was suffocating, utilities I could pay it on time or in full. Beautiful island just not for the poor
Jamaica would be ideal to live if you have a business or you have some kind of residual income coming from foreign . But to live there and get a job … the salary in Jamaica and the cost of living doesn’t add up and doesn’t make sense . In my opinion. My cousin makes $8000 every fourth night . That’s less than $100 CAD every two weeks . Who can live with that income ? After you take out taxi fare (which went up so high ), food cost (which is wild ) and rent … you are actually in the minus . Also I should say that my cousin works 6 days a week at a call centre -which is a decent job. I know others who work at wholesale and work $6000 a fourth night . I want to be clear I am not bashing Jamaica , Canada is no better . Rent is $3000 and the salary here unless you have a big big job (hard to get and also hard to find ) doesn’t make that . Not even close Sorry for the rant .
This high rent is not Jamaica alone, a lot you come on social media saying rent is high in Jamaica. I agree its high, but this is an international thing. So don't come on social media saying rent high in Jamaica, higher entities (international Real Estate group) are at play here.
An obvious question and answer, but you make it seem as though speaking on rent has negatives outside of offending landlords. Do you not speak on crime/violence in an effort to not offend criminals ?
@@MrJaforce smh they wont see ur perfectly sensible statement as sensible as they rather curse about something they cant change. but ur right if they came on cursing about rent in general worldwide its different.... but to make it sound like Jamaica has the highest rent isnt fair....but to be honest we jamaicans always think we have it the worst no matter what.
Very interesting and informative vlog Stephen. 👍🏼. I’m glad you shared your moms info, it’s extremely important for people to have an honest and knowledgeable realtor to work with! You always make a point to share so many important facts and are very thorough when reviewing information, love it!
Jamaica is actually one of the cheaper islands in the caribbean… considering that on a island land space is limited and everything has to be imported… we dont have much natural resources even the energy we are using is mostly from diesel while others can use hydro or natural occurring coal or geothermal etc so there is a premium… the average Jamaican today is living much better than 20 or 30 years ago… economy has not done too bad and covid didnt lick wi like it did other islands… if we could deal with crime i am certain we would see double the economic growth we are seeing… the diaspora has found new enthusiasm for JA and I am delighted to see money pouring in i just wish we see more money going into other parish outside KGN. Each parish capital needs a planning and development masterplan to beautiful and transform into modern cities not the ugly dirty unkempt cities and towns thar we have narrow streets poor drainage etc… we need serious gentrification of ghetto and inner city to unlock value all those areas around down town KGN fletchers land etc is serious value locked up when those should be apartments parks office blocks etc
Jamaica getting dear now we afto tell it as it is.i did some exploration..basic food prices are a bit cheaper than in brazil and a few other latin or caribbean places...and to make matters worse locally grown provisions dem a jock up the prices..a mean i wen thr hwt and some people a sell one breadfruit $600 to $800..ackee all as high as $400 to $600 JA and that was last year june..

Brazil is one of the worlds largest agric producers competing with USA and others tiny JA half of which is covered by mountains and a few miles wide how much food can we produce even things like rice? I qas always sayijg to myself the ppl of Jamaica need to rise up now and stand for their rights...of this Gov't and other governments over the years feel that the average ppl of Jamaica should survive from $15k per week and $60 a month then why are they paying themselves so much millions per year while the same average Jamaicans $72k-$80k per year hmmmmm
Some of us just don’t know how to rise above it. The quickest way most turn to is, either leaving the country, the rise of scamming or other illicit means. Big up to those that making it work with the little they get.
But minimum wage is 15 thousand dollars a week. You must read to educate yourself before you comment. And how much some states paying in the United States, 7. 50 up until now Congress cannot raise it to twenty dollars an hour and America is a first world economy
No matter what rent one it paying the landlord should be responsible for this . Yes your rent was $30k a month . However the landlord can afford to take care of the rats trust me . What I have realized with landlord they only want to collect but they don’t want to maintain the property.
Thank you on cost of living in Jamaica please let us know the median cost of all-inclusive hotel and visiting costs to different local places in Jamaica.
Times are really hard right now in the usa,50 is the new old in America, alot of corporations dont want to hire people in there 50s because they are like old cars with a lot of problems and the young people they are not ready to be no body slaves for along time, they have more options than there parents I know shalae a youtuber with half a million subscribers that makes 30,000 per month telling people about there welfare benefits and ssa bebefits and she is so trustworthy that many Americans rely on her because she doesnt do the click baits Many Jamaicans are up in age and looking for a change so videos like these will catch our attention I wish I could stay in Jamaica for a few months but my back condition makes that impossible I want my grandchildren to experience Jamaica
Sir, you are good because if that was me, I will run outside if I see a big cockroach. In America you can take a landlord to court or make a complaint for rodents and cockroaches. Keep in mind, pests carry disease.
First time seeing your channel and I am commenting specifically about " buying an iPhone yearly" quite honestly Americans do NOT typically "BUY" new phones each year or when new ones are released They do however, will FINANCE phones from their carrier so i think these details must also be added so as to give clarity so persons do not keep having the wrong impression of what's really going on.
Sir, I live in North America and live a very frugal life. I do not have cable, I do not change cars every two years, I do not purchase name brand clothes or hand bags, for the most part. I do not switch phones all the time. If you do that, you are a foolish person. Because most times those people do not own their own homes and are in debt. I cannot tell you how many married people have come to me to do things for them as like cosign for a condo, borrow money and I will not do it because they will down me in debt and ruin my credit.
We love the long videos about Jamaica, anything on Jamaica that don't know so freaking colonial on the blasted tourist bus when you go on tour My grand kids dodge down low in the tour bus and justl
Yes. It’s just that the initial cost for the solar panels and battery are very high. I’m sure with the next 5yrs it will get even cheaper as solar technology advances. I use solar power whenever I’m camping and I’m impressed with the technology.

I heard years ago that things in Montego had become somewhat inflated because of the scammers. Example: because they were able to buy the kickers shoes and polos at ridiculous prices anoungst other things everything kind of went up. Plus Mobay being a tourism destination with tourist prices.I don’t know of this as a fact though. I went to school there years ago
A lot of young people live with their parents or live in the ghetto where rent is closer to like $15k/month and steal light and water. Very few people can afford $150k/month for rent, maybe 5% of people in the country.
When the boss in America know you can work, they pay good money in Georgia, go for work in health care, grocery, mail carrier, hardware store, high end resorts Fastfood never evee use to pay good but many of them paying at 19 an hour in the malls The jobs are here in Georgia ❤❤❤❤
Man I’ve heard of people working on the train making a job living after putting in some years. A job like that in Ja would not be looked upon as a fair wage job at all.
You know Jamaicans in my opinion simply need to value what they have and stop interpreting that better is anywhere other than Jamaica Jamaica needs development yet we Jamaicans rather build other countries but complain and cuss when " other" nations see the value in what we left behind
Ok so... Kenya is s country, Jamaica is a island, Kenya has large land mass and give or take 50 million people.. i remember taking a few micro and macro economic courses in college and there are several things I can quickly think of that explains your issue and none of it has to do with the government directly.. First is that Kenya is now industrializing and it's still a agricultural producer, Jamaica is smaller in size as well as population and imports may food and other products that they do not produce, also competition.. Drivers down prices, islands have less people therefore prices can be higher for products they don't it can't produce plus with less people to produce and or buy products..if not subsidized by the government. I can go on and on but the bottom line is I see people not learn how currency works and how economics work.. Schools don't tech the majority of people about money just how to get a job and as I travel the world I hear every countrys people complain about the same things because they don't realize that the cost of living adjusts by the median income of the people of the country... Supply and demand causes this adjustment.. So.. You will see that some things are more and some things are less. The government's job is to help set policy.. For example.. If possible if housing prices are too high government can pass tax laws that help developers get a incentive for building more homes.. Of course the developers will only build it if they can benefit economically..a island has less people to live in those apartment complexes and how much the developer can and cannot make, government can supsadise those houses but that in itself created other problems..ghettos....etc and I can go around and around. My bottom line is economics has many moving parts and people don't ask themselves why everywhere they go there is differing amounts of people who are rich, poor and middle class, but in EVERY COUNTRY this same dynamic exists. A big factor people also don't understand is how the RESERVE CURRENCY of a world works and how that affects imports and exports for products and taxes, tariffs etc can impact costs of products a country DOES NOT produce. I can go on and on but this macro and micro economic causes of prices, income, expenses would be impossible to break down in a comment given that there is literally a DEGREE CALLED ECONOMICS that desks with money and economic processes and federal reserve, central banks and other things like interest rates that help control these things we all complain about 😅
@@richesmethodyour answer is The government is not responsible for anything. The government is not responsible for any fiscal or monetary policies to reduce inflation in your eyes. Ok, I get it.
I think it’s because we are not producing enough for our own and when you do we tend to want to export it where it will fetch higher prices. I was also taught that the government should be facilitators to production with countries, so if let say we need more onions, they should allow the importation of onion seeds into the country with little or no cost to drive production or lease lands to small farmers with the intent of planting more onions etc. If they do this, idk.
@@Stewy-xw9fz how can that be my response that govt is not responsible for anything when I literally explained the responsibility of govt is to set policies, I explained subsidies and developers of building houses 🤦🏼♂️ bro .. shaking my head
@@SOAIVLOGS macro economics.. You are right.. Supply and demand.. Profit.. They have to make a profit from the products produced and stay in business so with technology and the ability to sell around the world they can indeed sell abroad..100yrs ago those products would go bad or could not be produced in larger expert numbers or enough to turn a profit and that Dane business would go under.
This shirt is blazing like the sunset, where were yiou hiding bro while wodemaya was in Jamaica?yes I see them with gilybeenz etc....anyways big up selfz
the rent thing welll offf still bother....... 100% sure 90% of the country cant afford to pay rent at !00g...... this is clear your calculating from the average uptown person and ot the average jamaican.... minimum wage nuh reach 60g yet and the vast majority of ja getting close to or little above....just google average pay for mid class ja (poor not included) 60- 80 g. so this guide is only for the above average jamaicaans ?
Hello bro, it’s not a guide but an insight into what you can expect. I did mention it’s for people looking to return to Ja or invest in it and that it’s best to ‘OVER budget’ and save yourself room. You can never really set a guide that fits all as all our situations are different. I just read where someone is spending over $900k per month in the comments, this is definitely not true for myself but I know people who spend close to it but they are in good jobs and work hard, I can’t discredit them because it’s not MY truth. I’ve also met people who live waaaaaaayy less than that. I had a co worker years ago making $4500 per week and he had a kid, I asked him how he fed the baby…lasco. People make it work. And if that’s what you are happy with, that’s cool.
Let me help you out with some of those figures that are not adding up. You are encouraging people to move to Kingston because of the conveniences, yet at the same time admitting that it has some of the lowest salaries on the island. I live in Trelawny, there is no way I can find a person to do any work for me at minimum wage. It takes a minimum of $6,000 to get someone to clean my house or do very light gardening work. MINIMUM. that is basically $40 USD for the day or $800 USD for the month. It may sound low to an American, but someone living in the countryside with minimal expenses (many don't pay rent), can make it work. Nobody would move to Jamaica to do menial work, so they wouldn't be getting this salary. The data I see on the internet about Jamaica is out of date, or just false. There is a labor shortage on the north coast, I'm seeing help wanted signs all over the place. Kingstonians need to stop speaking for the entire island when they don't know what' going on. Also 1/3 of the island lives in Kingston? Maybe that includes St. Catherine. Which neighborhoods do you know that can house nearly 1 million people? I don't know here these stats are coming from.
Before we have this rift between what Kingstonians think vs other parishes. I’ll mention again, I moved to Kingston, I am not a Kingstonian, I was born in Falmouth Trelawny and lived there for 21 years. I also lived in St. Elizabeth for about 5 of those years for school. Portland is actually my favorite parish out of all so I’m there a lot, I’m a countryman. I clearly said if you work remotely and can maintain your job and salary. I never said people should come here to do menial work. Jamaica has a low attrition rate for high paying jobs, that’s why many qualified students end up working in call centers for years. You mention a labour shortage in the north coast, if the pay is great as you are leaning towards and people can make it work, why are these jobs not being filled? You will never find statistics especially on Jamaica that is up to date but it’s a reference point. You know how we are as Jamaicans especially when things like census come about to even let them know how many people live in the house, we either not there to take census or some feel them too fass 🤣. But we say it’s about 3mil+ people that live here, is it factual, no, but it’s a close enough representation. Might be 4mil by now 🤣. Thanks for your comment and input Feona
@@SOAIVLOGSAnd talk less of the rXial makeup! I still see on google and other sites that Jamaica is 92% black. That is not entirely true. Out of that 92%,15% are biracial(one white parent and one black parent). And i keep seeing whites are at 0.8%. Lies!! There are more than 3% whites, 3% East Indian, 2.7%, and 0.8 others(Jews, Syrians, chinie black mix, Indian black mix, Portuguese, etc)....Too often Jamaicans just label themselves black even though they are of mixed heritage. Nothing wrong with being proud to be black, but it will scew the census!
It is true about the job situation on the north coast. Every KFC, Popeyes, Burger king and Pizza hut is always hiring. I find that some Jamaicans do not want to work. Its better to do a Hustle on the street or on family members. This is not only true for the north coast but for all the parishes in Jamaica. World wide too. There is a generation of people who have a good % of people who do not want to work. Its just the way it is now. @SOAIVLOGS
I wouldnt say wayyy cheaper but it is especially in terms of food. You can get a whole chicken here for half the price back in Jamaica. Produce like fruits and veg are very cheap in comparison.
My gosh, please stop talking about Jamaica, You talk a lot of negative things and moved. Talk about America. I live in America and everything is now expensive. Stop using the name Jamaica now, focus on your new endeavors. Jamaica is not the only country that is expensive. And miminum wages in Jamaica just raised again I heard it , in the budget presentation online. The cheapest one bedroom apartment is the USA now 1500 a month dollars, mortgage and buying a house in America if you don't owe a house is so high.
It is difficult to compare cost of living with many countries without comparing the economy, governance, development etc. A large part of JA's population does not pay mortage or rent which 50% of income in the cities. I'm in the UK. basic food like bread, milk, eggs, rice , flour sugar , the price is are at least 50% cheaper than Jamaica but housing could cost more in UK. ( Note: health cost is free in the UK).
Wow! I am living in the US for over 40 years, I wonder if I will fit in again. What would be the cost to rent a 2 bed apt in say, Havendale? Would an income of US$5000 per month keep me?
I’ve seen nice 2 bedroom apt for about $1500 usd sometimes if you are lucky a lil less and I’m talking about a newly renovated or modern type space. So $5000 per month can definitely keep you comfortable in Kingston

Not even close
Sorry for the rant .
This high rent is not Jamaica alone, a lot you come on social media saying rent is high in Jamaica. I agree its high, but this is an international thing. So don't come on social media saying rent high in Jamaica, higher entities (international Real Estate group) are at play here.
Don’t come on social media talking about rent high in Jamaica because rent high internationally ? You sound like a puppet
@@ekhinmety One question, what you can do about the high rent?
An obvious question and answer, but you make it seem as though speaking on rent has negatives outside of offending landlords. Do you not speak on crime/violence in an effort to not offend criminals ?

Facts bro ,the cost 💲 of living is skyrocketing in Jamaica 🇯🇲 , let’s pray 🙏 something changes for the better 🎉
@@tacmon29 how can u compare food price between jamaica and brazil. Brazil is one of the worlds largest agric producers competing with USA and others tiny JA half of which is covered by mountains and a few miles wide how much food can we produce even things like rice? And if we agree cost of living gon up surely we should want farmers to earn more for their produce already farmers get such a raw deal dem haffi deal with larceny disease drought the works to feed us… lets pay them so farming becomes lucrative for di yute dem!
Smh

I wish I could stay in Jamaica for a few months but my back condition makes that impossible
I want my grandchildren to experience Jamaica
Sir, you are good because if that was me, I will run outside if I see a big cockroach. In America you can take a landlord to court or make a complaint for rodents and cockroaches. Keep in mind, pests carry disease.
First time seeing your channel and I am commenting specifically about " buying an iPhone yearly" quite honestly Americans do NOT typically "BUY" new phones each year or when new ones are released
They do however, will FINANCE phones from their carrier so i think these details must also be added so as to give clarity so persons do not keep having the wrong impression of what's really going on.
Your rent experience is so similar to my experience my place was invested with scorpions
Am seeing that airbnd is a much cheaper way to go and I learn that uber eats is in Jamaica, thats all we need

By being friendly people with no money share things
They survive better than many in the United States or Canada or UK
A lot of young people live with their parents or live in the ghetto where rent is closer to like $15k/month and steal light and water.
Very few people can afford $150k/month for rent, maybe 5% of people in the country.

Jamaica needs development yet we Jamaicans rather build other countries but complain and cuss when " other" nations see the value in what we left behind

Amazing you are speaking on this subject. When I was in Kingston ten years ago I was inquiring about purchasing property if I'm a American. citizen.
Kenya and Jamaica money have the same value but food cost half the price in Kenya. Why is that? This Jamaican government is no good.
The struggle is real
If alot of Jamaicans and others could find a job that allows them to truly work remotely earning usd and live in jamaica. The island would over flow

the rent thing welll offf still bother.......
@SOAIVLOGS
