- One downside to owning a performance car can be excessive exhaust noise. It’s great when you want it, but hard to be quiet when unwarranted. We have been wanting to change the exhaust on our Subaru WRX without making it sound like a factory car. Xforce’s Varex exhaust with Smart Box bluetooth technology featuring variable exhaust control is a real game changer. We caught up with the team at Performance Exhaust in Knoxfield to give our wagon a new sound.

Great technology I love it. Thing is, most of the problem noisy cars in my area are $500 20 year old Commodores and Falcons. I doubt any of them will buy this system.
Kids, no one except other kids who know nothing about cars are impressed by a standard 6 cylinder grocery getter with a fart can. SMH
Damn that exhaust looks great too.
Illegal for on road use:
www.86forums.com.au/index.php?/topic/630-exhaust-checks/
Then again I'd say 99.9% of vehicles has some kind of illegal modification without realising it, especially 4WD trucks!
I don't listen to anyone trying to sell me something they will just tell me shit!
So how much one get paid for this type of commercial these days?
@@Hellsong89 One million dollars 👍
I'VE BEEN researching this for a while for my genf2 clubby, you just pushed me over the line. Mainly wanted to not piss off the neighbors/neighborhood. Great vid!!
Happy with the results? Debating a valved muffler as my cold start us really noisy
@@boytoy663 the neighbors are.
Nuh I'll keep it loud 24 7
Subarus can get annoying for been too loud.
Lmao!!!!
You bought the wrong car
Nothing I mean NOTHING beats the sounds of a Boxer engine with a nice exhaust!!
A v8? Come on man! V8 are just beautiful.
@@Khalid-nv9io Gorgeous!!! But boxer with UEL header and a nice exhaust sounds better than a V* with exhaust!
@@Atem_S. yeah i guess so.
Should get ur xforce stuff installed by Nizpro.. u get a great note and also can hear it banging around under the car, brilliant stuff👍
Hi Maybe we can help? where are you based? we can help arrange a dealer to check the fitment for you to rectify the rattle on the body.
@@XForcePerformanceExhaust all good mate, was referring to my old car.. once bitten twice shy ha.. though i did end up bringing it to you guys and you fixed it up perfect, one of your blokes got artistic with a grinder and sorted it👍
glad YT recommended me this video. ive been searching for a cutout solution and i think this is the best way to do it.
Put this on a non VTEC honda and set open valve at 4500rpm, win win
13:39 VTEC kicks in.
I have an xforce varex cat-back exhaust on my '16 Hyper.Blue and love it
I need to do mine. I’ve got a wrx wagon too with Invidia Q300 turboback. Way too loud for my liking! I’d rather hear turbo/induction sound with a tiny bit of that boxer rumble
Awesome video guys, pretty cool product too. Im glad you went to performance exhaust because just by chance i was about to buy off their website. Nice to know is a legit real place run by what seems to be top blokes. haha
Mean boys good tech talk
Great content. This is the future of auto blogs in Oz. Win Win
I don't have the fancy shmancy app version, but instead the regular Varex, wired into the car. I put a power window toggle switch under my window wiper stalk and it looks stock. It's probly at the legal limit when fully open, but ya still turn it down when you see cops. It's kinda fun.
Just bought one
I like the smart box, much better than the remote. I have the old system, I just bought it however online from the same shop. My only issue is my car is still loud open or closed so I'm taking back to my workshop to try quiet it down.
At first when I closed it at the lights it worked but after awhile it stopped working and I've only driven it once with the new system.
I have a Bridgeported FD so I know I can't really do much, I just have to except it.
Very interesting, that is one immac Rexy for the age, must have low kays im guessing
That's cool and all but what about the people with an acessport?
I have the Varex on my STi, mufflers are a little wonky but the varex is great
price ? warranty ? would be also great if it could be fitted to a 3 -4 inch straight through pipe before the muffler and joined to a side pipe but love the idea for what it does great review guys love bench torque and all your vids
Price is up there, but they have sent me a brand new muffler when it was out of warranty!
I used to have a varex and it was handy, they seem to have come a long way.
Damn! First time I heard of XForce, but that exhaust is heavy duty. Looks like some cast iron parts. Why does it need to connect to the OBD2? For the RPM setting?
Does Matrix mode with the OBDII keep working with the app minimized? I've read a review saying it doesn't.
These systems work well. However you can cancel some of the noise with the exhaust' own pressure wave. That is how Thermal R&D exhaust are designed. I have one on my Focus ST, it's only a little louder than the stock exhaust and REALLY loud at WOT. My BOV is only loud above 15 psi, my setup is perfect.
So the smart controller is not possible to install on any subaru built before 2001 as they are all OBD1
Well OBD2 Port but with Different wiring for Subaru Scan tool.
Is there any danger of overheating the exhaust valves due to manual setting ?
Only as much as running a stock muffler. Are you pushing more boost or power in the car? They maybe you need a more open, free-flowing exhaust system. Stock power? It won't hurt the valves any more than the stock exhaust system hurts it. Catalytic converters do the most damage to exhaust valves, and are the biggest restriction to even stock engines.
I have a Varex on two of my cars. I love em and want another one.
But I have them hard wired to a rocker switched because their Bluetooth sucks
Guys, how do you go tuning the car with the variable flow exhaust? Do you have a situation where you tune with the open exhaust and then have problems when you run the car with the quieter restricted option?
It holds peak boost down due to the restriction, otherwise nothing detrimental to the engine.
You can have a case where the ecu will correct for knock when applying full throttle on closed exhaust.
It can cause issues.
@@dlyle How can the ecu correct for knock when the knock threshold is not exceeded due to a restricted exhaust!? The opposite is in fact true.
I had my car tuned with the rear muffler removed and a downpipe fitted before the rear axle- cause that's how i raced it. When i would fit the rear muffler (which was a straight throu design, the pipe ran under the diff so it didn't have extra bends and didn't cause problems with the really low ride height) the tune went pretty out of whack. Yes, it wouldn't run as much boost. But much more of a concern would be it's tendency to knock and run stupid rich cause it uses a map sensor which can't calculate the appropriate amount of fuel cause it still thinks the engine is consuming the same volume of air. You could live with it. Just try not to use more rhan 70%throttle or put more octane boost in the tank.
I like the features of the smart box but I think it's more important to monitor the car with my access port. Too bad you can't have them both
John Smith I've looked into that option but what other people have reported is that the obd2 can only give info to one device at a time
That was cool az thanks boys keep on keeping on
What a nice wagon!!!
My Exhaust place tried to sell me on stainless steel system i told them no way (there is no salt here on road)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Mild steel sounds better. (deeper note with less tin can sound)
- Mild steel still last 15-20 years.
- Much easier to weld & work with.
- So what it gets rusty if you dont paint it, its an exhaust not chrome wheels.
Oh and a full 3" mild steel system with twin 3" tipped stainless muffler will costs like $500
Gday, are you planning to dyno the results between open/closed exhaust valve positions i.e balance between noise levels vs power made/loss?. Great work as usual.
The system is not designed to be run at WOT with the exhaust closed, not on a turbo car anyway...
Plus after the cat it makes absolutely dick all difference. Rear muffler is for farts only. Worth commenting even after a year
I want this for my car but it is illegal in QLD unless your car's factory exhaust system included an adjustable valve
Yep. Why something that makes your car quieter is against the law is beyond me
Where do you get the roof rail delete kit? I wanna do it for my bug wagon
Copperhead - Stacey David Trucks....check out that exhaust system.....
Im curious to see what impact this has to engine longevity, as a kid i was always told a clogged exhaust will shit the engine in no time
I dynamo ruined 3 times, I don't know why, what is the solution?
Could have just changed the steering knuckle rather than the dump pipe... Oh well.
STI knuckle is solid and fits.
Yes that's an option, but we preferred to change the dump pipe to the correct one.
Got one for VTEC?
But here is the big question.
If you get ECU remapped with varex at 100% Open.
then you have it closed and go WOT what happens to the tune?
Just set it to open above a certain load point I E ours will open at 15% throttle.
@@fullboost ok let me rephrase that.
You are out on a road trip 1000km from home and the controller fails in the full Closed position (yes they can fail just like anything and many have failed over the years, at wreckers many varex mufflers with seized valves)
Going from a Tune meant for 3" open system forced onto what is more like a 2" restrictive system wit valve closed has to have major effect on tune & engine.
Yes I have seen factory bi-modal systems fail on cars nothing is perfect. If you couldn't open it via the provided key ring either you could physically open with a pole as the valve is easily accessible. It's quite obvious when the valve is closed on a louder car so I guess you're not going to be going WOT if there is a malfunction.
Yoooo I should get this. I have a straight piped turbo BRZ. Jokes on you I’m 22 lol but yeah it would be nice for my neighbors to not have it be as loud and then open it up on the road.
Does matrix mdoe always work? Even without the phone or the app open. Just setup once over the app.
Yes 👍
@@fullboost thanks are you 100%sure?
Who honestly thinks a nice Rexy rumble is a downside. Its one reason why we buy them!
The Police 👍
I'm daily'n a Mazda 1000 ute with a Webber fed 13B bridgeport, has twin 2 1/2" primary's all the way to the diff into 4" single over diff, into exhaust box with 4" dump tip. Do you reckon these types of valves would even work on something like this....obviously the obd stuff won't, but would the exhaust boxes live very long behind a rota?
I was advised that the Varex system isnt really suitable for Rotary engines.
@@BobbyLowedesign There goes my false hopes. Thanks man!
We blew the exhaust off our rotary many years ago, yeah they are not friendly on mufflers :)
@@fullboost Just that feeling when you have to clutch it and roll past the PoPo, heart in your throat, praying that they don't notice. One of these valves would be sweet!
Lol this what we need in California now ...
Now don't use your phone whilst driving now?
Of course not 👍
I remember fucken years back they had these Varex mufflers with a remote where you could control the....oh wait.....
Cool idea for the rotary.
India import??
subarus vtec solenoid
@ 8:10 what's that in the back!?
What are you referring to?
if your car is tuned this is going to affect the remap, isn't?
you might need a tailored tune to run efficiently
We haven't seen any issues like that on this car.
@@fullboost just telling because you are changing your exhaust back pressure, even if it's a little it may be not ideal for the health of the engine. I know is not going to be so dangerous but just pointing it.
By the way nice car and I am also not fan of too loud exhausts specially for daily cars
What about the 50 -60 year olds in their "loud" Aussie muscle cars or the 40 year olds redlining their vrods like it's a vtec .?.i dont like the dsg wet fart noise but some like it thats their choice and thats ok.Just enjoy the loudness who cares what people think.
Change the exhaust to a V8 Commodore big bore. Then bolt it to a V8 commodore for some sweet sounding LS ness. No more Subaru farts, no more Subaru, sorted.
Martin McMartin pretty sure he wants it more quiet
Isnt this illegal? All it takes is a copper with a torch to see the valve in the rear muffler and its defect time.
Then sell it to someone that likes it?
Sell what?
I forget Subarus and wrx are different things
Why the fuck would you buy a Subaru if you don't like loud exhausts >.>
Haha I go loud just to annoy people
LS the WRX..... Problem solved!!
Dont want the noise dont have a performance car. That app will major distract you while your behind the wheel
