As someone who used to be in one of them, the people (that are usually) up front are a section known as the Front Ensemble or the Pit, and there are a large variety of instruments included in the one section. You were partially right in calling a lot of them xylophones, though the type of instruments they are is called a mallet instrument. The larger brown/red-ish ones are called Marimbas, the large silver or gold ones are called Vibraphones (or vibes for short), the small silver ones that sound like *ting* or *tink* are Glockenspiels (otherwise known as bell kits), and the smaller brown ones are Xylophones. Also included in the Front Ensemble/Pit are anything electronic, concert versions of bass drums and cymbals, among many other types of cymbals as well. I hope all of this helps, and it's been really fulfilling seeing your knowledge of the marching arts increase with every video!
Yes! Great comment! This is a link to a lot video of just the front ensemble playing parts of their show that I really hope she watches! ua-cam.com/video/tPJA3jAFbpU/v-deo.html Also part of a lot of drum corps pit sections are timpani (those big drums that the guy is sitting and playing in the back). You have to have very good ears to play timpani especially in marching band/drum corps because of having to tune them and change pitches throughout the show

So there's something that's really hard to "get" from watching this show on video - that you really need to understand and watch again. The two big black circles on the field near the end represent black holes. It's nearly impossible to see, but when someone puts their arm into the black hole on the left - an arm sticks out of the black hole on the right. Just before the climactic chord, someone steps into the black hole on the left, and instantaneously emerges from the black hole on the right. Then the rest of the guard members race across the field - but they're clearly affected by "time" and none of them can reach their destination before "dying" as the show ends. Yet, you still have the two lovers there at the end on the park bench. Absolutely beautiful show. Thanks for this.
Best Hornline ever! i remember standing right in front of them and experience the face melting that took place in Illinois and any time i ran into them on the way to finals. They are the only Hornline to get that illusive perfect score for a reason and they killed it all season long.
This show is conceptually amazing, thought provoking and technically stunning. This is my favorite DCI show of all time and there are things that even I didn’t notice until a couple years ago. At 12:30 their drill is the spinning prism. If you look closely, there is one line of colorguard on the left and three on the right. The way they toss their flag is supposed to represent a ray of light passing through the prism and then experiencing refraction (hence the three lines on the right). And at 13:35 the black objects on the field represent either end of a wormhole on different sides of the galaxy/universe. When the rest of the guard try to reach the other side without the wormhole, they eventually fall to the ground. They have died because the amount of time it takes to get there is more than they could survive. The only thing that survives is love because love transcends space and time.

The crowd reaction to them getting gold was unreal because they have been a crowd favorite for years and had gotten close many times but this year they reached the top finally
Courtney, I believe what you're talking about at 8:45 and 15:00 is the front ensemble. The front ensemble is comprised of Marimbas, Xylophones, and Vibraphones, as well as various percussion instruments such as the drum set, chimes, concert bass, timpani, rack, etc. They're very interesting to watch, and you can search up videos of just the front ensemble of DCI corps. If you want to know more about the battery (marching percussion aka drums) and front ensemble, I recommend checking out WGI. WGI is like DCI, but for color guard and battery. Many members who march DCI participate in WGI during the off (winter) season.
Imagine if she knew that at 7:59 they're INDIVIDUALLY playing sections of the runs up and down the brassline. You just can't hear it in the recording very well. 😥 That would be a reaction to behold.
I really love the music in this one. I've always loved Strauss' Sunrise from Thus Spoke Zarathustra (the opening and closing music of this performance).
I distinctly remember watching an early-season vid of Crown in 2013. When I heard the portion with the insane runs after the intro, I thought to myself, "If they clean the visual program and unplug the mics, the title is theirs to lose." (The vocals - ESPECIALLY during the ballad - just drove me up the wall.)
SavageBeast LB lmaoooo we all know BD is the Highest scoring show ☠️ I love and enjoy that show, but personally I believe E=MC^ and Tilt are the “Greatest” bc of how influential they were.
OH YES! This was the year Crown Placed 1st, and this was the year they got a perfect 20.000 in the caption of brass so they had a perfect brass instrument section for that year. This is one of the most difficult shows to perform in my opinion and it’s amazing.
I'm surprised you didn't say anything about the illusion of stepping through the "wormhole" from 30 to 30. After seeing your video of Phantom Regiment's 2011 "Juliet", I thought you'd be absolutely bawling at the end of this one! I just found your channel last night. Though I'm not a fan of "reaction" videos, I find your facial reactions fresh and authentic. Glad to see you enjoying and appreciating these awesome programs!
Went to music school (university) with Kevin, who was the narrator and baritone player in that year. That guy has gone on to do some amazing things with the Cavaliers Brass as their head brass teacher as of late.
As others have mentioned, the people up front play various instruments, but you can refer to all of the ones you were admiring together as "mallets". "DANG, the mallets were going crazy fast!"
Does anybody else notice that she goes in one of the black holes and comes out the other in the end of the closer? Took me like 45 million times of watching this to even NOTICE but made my entire day when I did haha.
Yeah - got to experience this one at finals and got to watch them warm up for semifinals. Reminds me how insanely good this was, especially the brass caption that year.
I remember this year my dad and I were snooping around YT for some previews and found that Crown posted their first full run through. (link ua-cam.com/video/b5D5logVxT0/v-deo.html ) and both of us just jaw dropped at how clean they were and knew it was going to be a special year for them. Impossible you say? (lol) also Courtney if you want to see something cool, this is their "victory run" with a camera on one of their horn players so you can see it from a performers perspective ua-cam.com/video/gjTI8PwQZrQ/v-deo.html . It's a little shaky but really cool. Now if you think their mallet percussion is going crazy, please check out a few more Cavalier shows: XtraordinarY and Immortal . Immortal literally has them go out on the field and have their own special feature.
Have never liked so quickly in my life. I don't know if you saw my last comment but this show is a bit of an acquired taste, and it really helps to understand the amount of skill required for some of the things they do. 2013 Crown is in my humble opinion THE best hornline this activity has EVER seen. Nothing before or after even comes close. The technical level displayed by that line, combined with superior technique, intonation and most importantly CONTROL at the upper volume levels was insanely good. Add in extreme demand in the visual programme along with the fact that their musical book was fucking BEASTLY and THAT is why they won the championship and that is the best hornline EVER!
I really enjoy your channel and you. Your reactions are the best. I wanted to see how you reacted to the story of love. I thought it might get some tears. That ballad is one of my all time favorites .

You are more than welcome to come and join and watch any of the videos you want without any pressure of making a reactive video. That way you can just enjoy the videos without actually having to “work “
Hi Courtney!! This was probably my top 2 shows of that year! So freaking good. The brass line of this corps has been the best and most difficult for many years. Those instruments you see at the front are the section called the “front ensemble” or “pit” for short. Here is a video of just that section playing in a warm up from that year before a show if you would like to see more of their playing! ua-cam.com/video/tPJA3jAFbpU/v-deo.html
Yeah, Philip Glass music seems kind of right for drum corps somehow. I'm surprised no major corps has yet to do a show featuring his "Koyaanisqatsi" movie score.
I would love to see you react to winter percussion, I would recommend Northglenn Highschool 1998 as this is the originator of percussion theater in the indoor percussion arena.
Every drum corps has an identity. This corps identity is blowing every other corps out of the water with their brass playing. I thought it was kinda funny how at 7:56 during the most difficult and innovative brass moment in the history of DCI she wanted to see the front ensemble (no hate obviously just found it funny). Crown's MO since 2009 has been to win the best brass performance award, have top 5 visual performance, and a 6-10th place drumline that held them back from multiple championships.
This week would be DCI finals week, I'm sure I speak for a lot of fans when I say that it means a lot to us to see a fresh pair of eyes on shows we all know and love. Thanks for giving our activity some love, I'm glad you enjoy it.
Check some of the more classic shows: Cadets 2000 and Cavaliers 2000 (these 2 tied for 1st place, which hasn't happened since I dont think,) Madison Scouts 1995 "A drum corps fans dream" vs Scouts 1996 "A drum corps fans dream: part dos." Also check Velvet Knoghts 1993 "Magical Mystery Tour"
John is a simp. Also idk if you got the reference, but at the end they had one guard member go across the crown through a wormhole, while the rest of the guard "died" along the way representing Einstein's theory of relativity.
@@ThereaalSP one took the worm hole to travel instantly whilst the others travelled at relativistic speeds and "died" becausr the journey took them longer than their life spans (as opposed to john simplord who further pushed the idea by exiting the wormhole and dancing out of the crown while the rest of the guard was shackled by time and distance)
There’s a reason they got a perfect score in brass
The ending of the drum and expert part.
Wait they did?
GamingWithFun15 on finals night yes they did.
Even the baritone and contra parts for that show were ridiculous and played perfectly.
I dont think anyone has gotten a perfect brass score since have they?

I've been asking for this since your first DCI video! Its FINALLY here! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Great now I'm late for work.
Worth it
I love Carolina Crown! They blew me away years ago while watching them with my kids in Hattiesburg, MS DCI South 🎶👍🏾😘!!!
THE greatest show of all time. Along with Tilt
I’m gonna have to disagree
SavageBeast LB go ahead 💀
Davon Isaac it’s ok to disagree but come on, bd 2014
SavageBeast LB lmaoooo we all know BD is the Highest scoring show ☠️ I love and enjoy that show, but personally I believe E=MC^ and Tilt are the “Greatest” bc of how influential they were.
Davon Isaac I was gonna say that that I agree with
PURPLE PANTS BAND
12:15 will forever be my favorite hit. Period.
Doodily doo! Doodily Doodily Doo

Yes! She can hardly tolerate the mellos piercing through her ear buds lol
My favorite show of all time. Got to see them in person the night they won the championship. It was an incredible experience.
Damn, brings a tear to my eye! That’s music folks 100% !!!
Just seamless perfection between percussion and brass... very well written!
Loved it! Carolina Crown 2014 is another great one that you need to check out!
(lol)
also Courtney if you want to see something cool, this is their "victory run" with a camera on one of their horn players so you can see it from a performers perspective ua-cam.com/video/gjTI8PwQZrQ/v-deo.html . It's a little shaky but really cool.
Now if you think their mallet percussion is going crazy, please check out a few more Cavalier shows: XtraordinarY and Immortal . Immortal literally has them go out on the field and have their own special feature.
You should have seen it in person. Great effing show. Love Crown! I loved this young lady's reaction.
Have never liked so quickly in my life. I don't know if you saw my last comment but this show is a bit of an acquired taste, and it really helps to understand the amount of skill required for some of the things they do. This show made me fall in love with the activity and I'm so glad that you've finally watched. I love your channel and please keep pumping out the content :)
thank you for doing these videos! always appreciative of those who see the beauty in DCI!
The day has finally come!
Unbelievable how they can move that fast and play SO WELL.
I marched Crown 2010. 2013 was the first year I went to finals as a spectator. I went because this show was just so amazing! And we all wanted to be a part of Crowns first championship. The crowd reaction when they won was like nothing I’ve ever seen.
Oh, I've been waiting for this! As soon as I saw this, it became my favorite show.
yessss now we just gotta get that Cadets 2011 one up lol
They rehearsed at my high school that year!!! Of course I was 11 at the time, but wow lol
I wish I could see more of the dingdingding ding, ding, dingding ones lol.
Not sure if you caught it but at 12:30 they created a rotating 3D prism 😁
Only one word needed MAGNIFICENT!!!
Front row for this performance and the encore, definitely the best brass performance I have ever experienced
Third. I'm early enough that this video has 3 views and 10 likes lol.
Dylan Couch was first so stop spamming it

@@Cmmf_ it honestly slipped my mind. Contrary to popular belief (no one asked actually. Saying that just makea me feel better) I don't copy and paste my recommendations. i take around 4-6 minutes to write them out then proof read the final comment before I post, so sometimes i leave shows out or i just don't feel like typing out anymore of them so i cut it off
This show means a lot to a lot of people.
Probably my favorite GOAT DCI show.
The horn line tho breathtaking....woww..crazy....
How i miss DCI...14 mnts show....rehearsing months....makes everything right...i was there back in my high school day...it was fun but tiring..
Phantom Regiment 2018 - Babylon, Carolina Crown 2012 - For the Common Good, and Carolina Crown 2016 - Relentless
Thank you so much! One of the best crowd reactions I have seen!
I’ve been waiting for you to review this show. It is one of my absolute favorites
Crown 2012 was just as good I think they could have gotten perfect scores both years
It's cool that you noticed all the cool stuff in the Frontline. A lot of people over look the Frontline
I really enjoy your channel and you. Your reactions are the best. I wanted to see how you reacted to the story of love. I thought it might get some tears. That ballad is one of my all time favorites .
I run a group on Facebook dedicated to everything Drum Corp and matching band. It’s kind of small but it has a few people on it.
Here is a video of just that section playing in a warm up from that year before a show if you would like to see more of their playing! ua-cam.com/video/tPJA3jAFbpU/v-deo.html
carolina crown 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016. LEGOO!!!
This is my favorite show of all time!!!! Thanks so much!
I was there! Absolutely incredible
I was so looking forward to you watching and reacting to this video!
Yeah, Philip Glass music seems kind of right for drum corps somehow. I'm surprised no major corps has yet to do a show featuring his "Koyaanisqatsi" movie score.
This show was so fun to perform I miss it so much
You played timpani right?
I would love to see you react to winter percussion,
I would recommend Northglenn Highschool 1998 as this is the originator of percussion theater in the indoor percussion arena.
The best DCI show ever to be put on a field
one of the best EVER!! Really POWERFUL sound. Loved it!!
The pit and the marimba are what you’re looking for!
If you would like to see a percussion line, check out the 2018 Santa Clara percussion recording!! You'll love it!!
Check some of the more classic shows: Cadets 2000 and Cavaliers 2000 (these 2 tied for 1st place, which hasn't happened since I dont think,) Madison Scouts 1995 "A drum corps fans dream" vs Scouts 1996 "A drum corps fans dream: part dos."
Also check Velvet Knoghts 1993 "Magical Mystery Tour"
P.s. unpopular opinion: Madison Scouts 1996 is way better than 1995. I said what I said.
OHHH YEAH! Legendary! Love this show so much. :D
You should check out Cadets 2000/2011, Phantom Regiment 2008, Cavaliers 2007, Santa Clara Vanguard 2013/2012, Music City 2017/2018
John is a simp.
Also idk if you got the reference, but at the end they had one guard member go across the crown through a wormhole, while the rest of the guard "died" along the way representing Einstein's theory of relativity.
Im confused how does it represent the theory of relativity
@@ThereaalSP one took the worm hole to travel instantly whilst the others travelled at relativistic speeds and "died" becausr the journey took them longer than their life spans (as opposed to john simplord who further pushed the idea by exiting the wormhole and dancing out of the crown while the rest of the guard was shackled by time and distance)
Elijah Fowler ooooooooh thx for the explanation 👍
@@ThereaalSP np my dude👊👊
It’s been seven years since this show and you just blew my mind.
