"I'd be so tired!"
You'd be amazed how much the crowd response pushes any tiredness aside until AFTER the run!
More so the fact that everyone runs the show two to three times back to back during full day rehearsals so running it one time is like only draining your battery to 75% lmao
seriously! it's such an energy boost to have a roaring crowd come at you after a moment or impact!
One of the greatest shows of all time. I don’t care what people say.
Facts
I agree. Also, respect from one crown fan go another
Benjamin Li for a second I was like, “How did you know”, then I say my profile picture😂😂😂
@@austinlaramie4367 no I just accessed your search history and you seemed to be a crown fan...
Benjamin Li Ah okay cool
Oh man, the music at the end: "Elsa's procession to the cathedral", sounds so powerful and tragic, it gives me goosebumps every time. Truly one of the best closers in DCI history.
the low brass sound is so deep
Both times - 79 and 11.
Philip Thompson - Elsa’s will always have a special place in every Phan’s heart.
Everytime I hear Elsa's Procession To The Cathedral" I am overwhelmed with multiple emotions. Needless to say, the Phantom Regiment lives in my ❤️ SUTA!
@@guitarmansegovia without doubt. I first saw Phantom in 80, and fell in love with them. Not too long after that I heard the 79 show, and that deepened it. And then a couple friends of my son's marched in 11. He marched in another corps, but I was there to see it that year.
Phantom Regiment is actually unique when it comes to their hornline set up: Most corps contract 24 baritones, but Phantom has a full section of marching euphoniums (nicknamed the “Buicks!”). They’re much heavier than baritones but they give Regiment a much deeper and darker sound than most drum corps!
The Buicks live!
Most corps have a mix of baritones and euphoniums, though some like boston and scv use all baritones for example. There are also a few others, not just phantom that use all euphoniums. Bd and bk come to mind, and I know there are a few others.
There is no words that I can use to describe the sound of the horn line to hear it live.
Wall of sound.
That kick-halt at 12:08 stopped the Earth turning for a moment, and my heart.
You should check out the finals day run through where a member kicked their own leg out of place!
Im a bd fan till i die, but if this isn’t one of the best shows of all time i dont know what is...
I'd say it's got to be in the top 5
Drum Corps Central it’s definitely in my top 5 for closers
Aaron Laughlin fr, gives me goosebumps everytime...
Fun fact: all corps have a “corps song,” it’s kinda like their almma matter, it’s a special song to them that they usually sing or play together and has significant meaning to the members and alumni. The last song, Elsas Procession to the Cathedral, is PR’s corps song, and it is B E A U T I F U L
And I still vividly remember the moment I became a member, the moment I welcomed a member, and the moment I became an alumn of The Phantom Regiment.
Elsa's is one special to our heart.
SUTA! 12-13
regimentfront2012 I can only imagine how special that moment was. PR and Crown are my 2 dream corps, I’m hoping to march either for my age out. At music city right now, always love seeing phantom regiment live, never disappoints
@@regimentfront2012 In cannot imagine the emotions one experiences during preparation for and performance of their last show during DCI finals. I would be a complete emotional wreck. Ageing out must be quite traumatic, joyful, overwhelming.
@@bruceburnett6834 My mother screamed in joy the day I announced I got my contract to march 2012. It was 20 years since she was at DCI finals in Dallas with my dad, pregnant with me. Needless to say, I had it coming!
Marching Regiment was a life goal of mine, and now that I have done it, I just hope I can spread the Regiment passion!

Hey Courtney, to answer your question there are four/five types of instruments in a DCI hornline. The soprano (highest) voice is the trumpets. The alto (upper middle) voice is the mellophones. The tenor (lower middle) voice is the baritones/ euphoniums. The bass (lowest) voice is the tubas. Corps usually have a structure of 24 trumpets, 16 mellophones, 24 baritones/ euphoniums and 12 or 16 tubas depending on the corps. The division of baritones/ euphoniums goes corps to corps depending on what the staff want for that year. Some corps have all baritones or all euphoniums and some a mix. Hope this helps.
what is the difference between a bari and a euph? is it just tone?
Scott Fritz there are allot of physics involved but bari’s are usually smaller and have a slightly more focused and directed tone. euphoniums are both larger, heavier and it has a warmer and deeper sound but less directed.
Phantom use euphoniums
Forgot to mention, a lot of people overlook one of the most important storytelling aspects of these shows. The marching. Their formations tell a story along with everything else. When I marched SCV I learned a lot about it.
That closer still gets me after all these years. Musically this wasn’t the most difficult show, but they played with so much passion and heart and that showed in the performance.
God I love a bit of Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral. And yes, Typical phantom. Always killing people.
Elsa's procession to the cathedral never fails to give me goosebumps, especially when coupled with powerful brass, a touching story, and amazing kick halts.
Specifically their drum majors
There just great at killing people
On-field carnage since 1981.
No one beats Phantom Regiment! The best story telling in all of DCI! Once you discover all of the nuanced details that add to the story, you truly appreciate how genius this show is! And to think they only got 5th that year!
This was the show that helped me fall in love with drum corps. I still fell nostalgic listening to it.
Ahhh finally you got to Juliet and i knew you'd love it, phantom is so great at telling stories on the field and now you see what we're all talking about referring to the emotional ending, lol. And the arrangement really is incredible it almost sounds like you have a full orchestra and thats just what Phantom does. What really kills ne everytime is hearing the crowd going crazy during thr entire climatic ending. As a performer there's just no better feeling.
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
This is my 2nd favorite Phantom Regiment show of all time. The first would have to be Phantom Regiment 2003 Harmonic Journey it has my favorite opening hit of all time it’s awesome! Great video I’m glad you liked it :D
What’s scary to know is that those are my top 2 in that order as well 😂
There is NOTHING compared to hearing drum corps live! Hopefully if the 2021 season isn’t cancelled you can come watch!!
Was I the only one that when she said that she was impressed with the beginning was like "OOOOO! WAIT FOR THE END GIRL!!!"
Elsa’s Procession here was the best it’s ever been played on the field.
And while we're on the subject of guaranteed requests to submit, there's no way this girl should continue with any Phantom Regiment shows without seeing the 1989 "New World Symphony" show. If she thought the brass in this show gave her the feels a bit, the '89 show will turn her into a weeping wreck by the end of it.
@@ruthiejocarpenter584 Oh yes, and another 1,000 times yes
You mean the show that was robbed of it’s gold medal?
Every time I perform, I get so tired but when the drums kick in and the crowd response starts coming, I get so full of energy that I absolutely kill it.
I honestly believe shes becoming a phantom regiment fan 😂.
I was very fortunate to have marched this show and it makes me happy to read so many comments saying its there favorite show. Thank you!
Same brother! SUTA!!
You gotta love the fact they used Mozart’s Requiem and Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.
Thank you for this!! It was an honor to be a part of the hornline this year, and I can tell you this final performance was filled with emotion! Thank you to you all for your kind words as well.
SUTA
PR ‘11 Tpt
I may have commented this before, but the crowd reaction during the performance absolutely feeds the performers on the field!!! During a performance like this, that reaction is what you LIVE FOR!
That opener always gives me chills and I'm pretty sure I teared up the first time I saw/heard it during a movie theater simulcast of the show.
You literally go need to see DCI live. Hearing hornlines live is literally amazing. You can feel the sound rumbling your chest and ears it’s insane.
As a former member of Phantom Regiment (73/74), I would have to say my favorite show would be 2010 - "Into the Light". Unique opening and closing that are both stunningly beautiful.
SAK 4:42 . Regiment was known for their powerful hornline, especially low brass for many years. 2005-2012 was the height of Phantom Regiment but unfortunately they had a series of administration changes and have since lost their identity and fallen out of the top 10. My personal favorite DCI show was the 2010 show Into the Light. SUTA
I bet you that sound will come back with the fact that David Warren is Director now. I was so happy to see that!
@@ericpaddock7496 I truly hope so. The Regiment's identify is not "show biz".
Bruce Burnett I think having a previous Drum Major will help. I miss the old Phantom!
10:09 they played the Eb#11 chord famously used by the Bluecoats 😍
I cry every single time I saw this show and still to this day seeing it has me cry like a baby! Especially with that unforgettable ending! 😭 I'm a huge Blue Coats fan but this show will always take my breath away
You gotta see Phantom Regiment 2006!!! It has a great storyline, combined with good choice of repertoire 💖
Courtney, I hope and pray that one American Summer's day you will be able to stand or sit inside a DCI 80+ hornline arc or circle and hear, feel and experience before a show that sheer deep, dark, rich, luscious sound of a Phantom Regiment, Blue Devils, Carolina Crown, Madison Scouts, Bluecoats, Cadets. You won't have to hold back tears. You would be balling for sure!!!!! 🤧😖 👁👁💦
WOW! SOME MOZART REQUIEM thrown in there CONFUTATIS MALEDICTIS! What a show!!!!!! What great music and choreography. Unbelievable dedication and talent.
THIS VIDEO I WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. TO SEE HER REACTION TO SUCH A POWERFUL CLOSER.
The Deepest sound comes from the Contras! Basically marching tubas! The second deepest sound is the Euphoniums/Baritones. They Euphoniums and Baritones are actually different, but they play in the same range or same "Deepness" so they are basically in the same category. The third deepest, or second highest is the Mellophones, which play in the middle range. And then the highest are the trumpets, the instrument I play!😂😊 And I would have to agree with you, the big Brass sound is a very powerful and emotional sound! I love your reaction videos! Thank you so much for making them and giving your honest impressions!😊
Hands down one of the best Low Brass sounds in history. wowow
Darren! You're hands down one of my favorite soloists! Thank you for you amazing Ledge solos! I enjoy them every time (even in your "bad" reps)
@@regimentfront2012 What bad reps ;)
@@darrenmaschino3346Fine. Your bad "rep"
Courtney, E=mc2 please we can't wait any longer. I think it will be your favorite show you have reacted to so far.
I was in the middle of a darts tournament and walked out when I got this notification. My favorite DCi show of all time
😂😂😂😂 Your reaction when you found out that Juliet died at the end was priceless!!!! All of Phantom’s best shows involve a drum major and or color guard member being killed! Lol
SPartcus ... killing DM and replacing him, complete with new slow baton draw. First time I saw that I was floored.
Courtney, I love how you're picking up on how to judge exciting DCI shows!! Thank you for watching them and enjoying them!
Again, another one of my all time favorites!!! The best recommendations for this channel, all the time
I can’t wait for Courtney to see DCI live in 2021!!!!
2022!:)
Courtney, you need to read the libretto for this one! It was a love story, but it was also a Phantom Regiment story. That last piece was one of their signatures pieces...rich, dark and deep.
Gotta check out On Air by these guys. The closer “Firebird Suite” is pretty impressive considering their marching turns to borderline running while maintaining the power of the horn line. Now if you want the saddest thing from Phantom, look up their Amazing Grace performance in honor of Doctor Dan. That man was amazing and the version they play is his.
Juliet was a great show. We were dumbfounded they only took 5th. One thing some folks don't understand about the scoring though is cumulative across the entire summer. I just remember being at that show and bawling like a baby by the end it was soo effing good. Thank you for doing this video, Courtney. I really have loved watching your journey through DCI. PR never disappoints.
Choked up every time! Iconic DCI! Right up there with Star of Indiana's cross to cross, and so many more...my friend actually marched with Star of Indiana that year, he played Contra, or Tuba the low ones you love. I'll be back to send you a list of what my faves are if you are interested, I've been a fan since 1978. Love you vids!!! Keep it coming!
This is from before DCI got weird. Glad you liked it!
(Late to the party) DCI alumni here, aged out in '06: The Academy! DCI truly is the sport of preforming arts. The hours of practice and dedication that every member, on AND off the field(staff and volunteers) puts into this is is crazy! But for twelve and a half mins, when you're out on that field, the lights, cheers and exhilaration is a moment you'll NEVER forget.
You noticing and loving the low brass just made the day of every Phantom Regiment low brass player! I didn't march PR, but they're known for their powerful low brass.
Drum Corps/Marching Brass Instrumentation:
~ *Trumpet* : Highs, "Soprano"
~ *Mellophone* : Highs-Mid ranges, "Alto"
~ *Baritone* : Mid-Low
~ *Euphonium* : Mid-Low (Baritone and Euphonium are very similar. Same mouthpiece and music but the construction is a little different. Euphoniums are much longer and heavier than Baritones but have a slightly timbre. From dark and melodic to aggressive and loud. Sounds like a WW2 bomber when they play loud. lol) The Euphonium line at Phantom call themselves the "Buicks".
~ *Tuba* : Lowest. I mean... they're tubas... They're huge and play super lowwww. Used to be called "Contras" back when DCI was on G Bugles.
The contrabass tuba (contra for short) is the deepest sounding horn in the band, but they're not what you're referring to. They're the giant horns that marchers hold on their shoulder and don't naturally have that much power to them despite their size. A good player can make them loud though.
The Baritone/Euphoniums are the powerful, deep sound that you really like. Bari/Euphs sound somewhat similar but the Bari sounds a bit brighter as it's a slightly smaller instrument. I think most corps use Euphs instead of Baris. Mainly because of that powerful sound that everyone loves, but that's not always the case. Sometime's they use both.
The middle voices that I personally find the most pleasant (4:58) are the mellophones. But as a mello player I'm biased lol. I am a woodwind player prior who learned how to play brass instruments specifically for the mello though. The mello voice takes the same role as the French Horn in an orchestra, often playing the harmonies and counter melodies (which I find the most fun to play).
And the highest voice in the hornline being your classic Bb Trumpet. They tend to play the melodies. They're cool lol.
Omg, non-stop DCI videos from you!! Maybe you should consider Bluecoats 2017- Jagged Line 😏😏
Phantooooooooom Rrrregiment!
Phantom has always been known for its low brass section. Best in the business. Yes, I agree it's all about the sound. If you think this is incredible, I will say it again...wait 'til you hear them live.
you should watch the 1994 DCI Championships.... the Blue Devils won with "My Spanish Heart", but The Cadets were a close 2nd with "West Side Story".... both shows are enjoyable, but I think you'll like the BD show - very lush, with ideas and a show design years ahead of its time... I love your reactions - it is touching how much you appreciate/enjoy this... I marched for five seasons with a college band (University of Hawai'i), and we had a high level of music and did 4 or 5 shows a season, but the level of detail and polish a DCI show attains is just incredible....
YES ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS! Fun fact the closer was “Elsa’s Procession to the Throne” and it is their corps song much like how the Madison Scouts close with their corps song in 2013
Cathedral*
That closer makes all the hairs on the back of my neck.Fabulous show
I saw this show live early on in the season when they came out to the west coast. The drill was much different of course since its early season but the sound is right there in your face.
Love your DCI videos! This show is incredible!
That "full hornline" powerful sound you liked is called "ensemble" (pronounced aan
·saam·bl) it means "the sound of everything together". Also, for the low sounds you can call it "low brass" or "baritone". For the especially low and deep sounds that is the "Contra"s. Contra is the tuba of DCI.
the deep horn sounds you’re hearing are mainly the baritones and euphoniums, but the deepest sound in the horn line is the contras. i’m a fellow baritone/euph player and i can confirm that the low brass sound in this show is god like.
Please watch phantom regiment play amazing grace. It's too short for a reaction video. But its one of the best pieces ever written for a hornline.
Courtney, when you said "What she just do?" All I could say was It is Juliet as in Romeo and Juliet. Surely you know the story and the trajic ending. Then I realized, I TOO made thw same mistake the 1st time I saw this show. Then Hit my head and said, Duh!.. Loves your reaction.
Same i was so confused until i realized like a week later “duh its romeo and juliet”.
Watch 2016 SCV and Carolina Crown 2016 also next
fun fact: at 11:40 on one of the 3 finals nights (I think it was semifinals?) lightening struck near the stadium at 11:33 adding even more to the dramatic impact lol
This is one of my favorite shows in recent memory, and I've admired PR's style for years. I was able to see them perform in northern California, when they made a West coast swing a few years in a row.
Another great theatrical show I'd suggest watching is The Academy's 2016 "The Corpse Bride."
At 9:50 in your post, the quick flag and sabre movement is a modern version of the mid 70's "Rockford file". Back then done with flags and rifles. The fans loved that movie. Nicknamed Rockford file because phantom is from Rockford, and a word play on an old USA tv detective show in the 70's named "The Rockford Files" Thanks once again!
this one was like a beautiul dream that made the mind and heart shine in all who see it...great reaction cc,much love...kent in ohio
fun fact, the soloist at 6:26 and the horn player were actually dating in real life, so the emotions are all real!
"dating"?? did you just pull in from 1903?
One of the best closers of all-time.
The euphoniums, or Buicks as they're called at Regiment, are hyped up as the "sound of the Phantom Regiment." We take great pride in the power that the euphoniums give in the hornline at Regiment! Hopefully you can get a chance to see drum corps live because nothing can beat hearing the whole hornline in person
OMG MY FAVORITE SHOW IN DCI HISTORY, THIS WAS ONE OF MY COLOR GUARD INSTRUCTOR'S LAST SHOW!
Ouhh I've been waiting for this one this is like such emotional show and isn't this the show that was based off of Romeo and Juliet.
Yes, this is based on Romeo and Juliet
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
My 2020 is complete. Thank you.
fun fact: i know the Drum Major who "died" on the field
he was actually an assistant band director for my first 2 years of high school.
5:10 makes me a happy bari/euph player
DAMN! I played this shit outta this ☑️
Romeo (second field commander) is my band director :) we like to poke fun at him dying on the 50 lol
If we really want to give her a complete look at how far back this activity goes, someone with some petty cash on them put in a guaranteed request for the video of a performance of the first ever DCI champion; the Anaheim Kingsmen, from 1972. I think we've seen how impressed she is with the latest shows. I think a neat reaction from her would be from seeing what the activity was like back then, when it was mostly marching rather than the marching/dance choreography hybrid in today's groups.
i must admit Madam Courtney, you have earned quite an escalated Honorable consideration for the concentrated language of Exchange apprentice MC reputation in your unique Historical Objective respect for the over all Drum Corp idiom and its a beautiful renaissance that over due reeducation in the Master craftsmanship of The Drum Corp Trademark

She definitely should react to Phantom Regiment '07 On Air!
Uggg - my favorite corps of all time. I’m sad they have kind of fallen off a bit as of late. I always loved their commitment to telling the story with the music and the marching but just couldn’t compete with all the props and electronics that have become prevalent. They had to go along eventually but I miss the marching quality. Ugg- those kick halts! Kills me every time. PR forever!
Can someone with money suggest Rach Star
I almost swore because she spoke during the duet
Low brass usually include baritone and tuba
Fun Fact about the show, they swapped the finals ending for the semi-finals ending in editing b/c they didn't want the image of self-harm into the product, BUT... on Finals night she actually "stabs" herself and then falls over on the podium "lifeless". (Only know that b/c I was in the show.)
Lol, was amazing when it happened b/c NOBODY knew she was going to do that & the crowd LOST THEIR MINDS cheering. Staff told her to do it DAY OF the finals show.
You should check out some the the Corps on the Open Class side of DCI. They’re usually younger members and their season is usually shorter than World Class. Vanguard Cadets, Legends, Blue Devils B, Spartans, Gold to just name a few.
You need to react to phantom regiment 1991 and 1992 two of the best shows ever
This show was on of the best Phantom Regiment has ever done!
You should definitely watch Carolina Crown 11, 13, and 15
yay phantom regiment
How long ago was this request made? I believe you recently also showed their 2012 show, the same corps just one year later. If I requested this show but also knew you were going to show the 2012 one around the same time I might want to suggest the Cadets from 2011 instead. Something to keep in mind for future similar-sounding requests :)
It's not a Phantom Regiment show if no one dies
Do the usaf pararescue they train to bring home the wounded the captured and the fallen
BETWEEN ANGELS AND DEMONS- THE CADETS. you must
Have a Wonderful Weekend : )
Since you're hitting all the Phantom love, might I suggest Adventures Under a Darkened Sky- 1995
Someone get Courtney to react to “Rach Star” PLZZZZ
I was at finals that year. If I remember correctly that was the year Rennick went to SCV leaving Phantom with a completely new drum line. PRs score kept creeping up each night and had there been one more night PR might have caught Crown for 4th that year.
Nah they wouldn’t have caught Crown. Crown scored much higher in their music captions because their book was way more difficult.
Jose Hill they were only .25 behind, cleaner visual or higher music would’ve closed that gap
gazelleman08 which they didn’t have especially against Crown’s Rach Star.
Jumped more than a point between semis and finals, so it’s certainly possible. They were ahead of Crown in multiple areas, just not brass. A little bit cleaner and Crown’s brass score isn’t enough to keep them ahead. But I get you, that’s not an easy show to jump past
