I changed the gaskets in my 3.8 .. through the top. What a bloody nightmare. And after all that the water was still getting into the engine. Thanks so much for this vid. Now instead of scrapping the car I now have the enthusiasm
Dude your amazing I learned so much just from listening to this straight forward video Think im gonna actually do this…… my Firebird head gasket just took a shit
Thanks, there's a butt load of those v6's camaroes here there I live. All blown up because butt holes think there fast. Some sell for 300.00$ . I am am older dude and thought I would have to use the cherry picker to remove the engine. But dropping it would be better thanks dude.
Video is correct, you can pull engine from bottom (and is much faster like stated in video). Haynes manual says same thing. However they do say you can pull engine from the top as well. I've seen a few videos where guys did the drivetrain driveway drop on 4th gens, BUT they left a cherry picker hooked to the front for safety while 6 ton jackstands supported the frame. (opposed to the tiny length of 3 ton stands). Kinda funny to see those little jack stands sitting like that, but if it works it works... Changed my head gaskets on my 3.8 WITH THE ENGINE IN THE CAR! There are many tutorials on how to pull heads on a 3.8 Camaro. One thing I didn't know about the plastic intake gaskets before I replaced intake so now I have to pull out the lower and replace with real deal gaskets.
I engine swapped my accord thru the bottom, easy peasy. most manufacturers drop the body onto the engine these days so makes sense to do what they do backwards
I did the head gaskets on my 97 with the engine in the car. It wasn't that bad at all really, honestly the worst part was cutting the rusty exhaust bolts off at the headers/collectors (yeah I had long tubes already but I can't imagine it being much more difficult with regular manifolds). The heads being underneath the cowl and whatnot though for the head bolts? Not bad. Though cutting off rusty collector bolts would have been just as bad pulling the engine from the bottom anyway.
You can pull the engine from the top with the transmission attached as well. I find it easiest to pull from the bottom, but I've done from the top (engine only), from the top (engine + trans), and from the bottom (everything like in this video).
“There’s something you don’t see every day.” Those jack stands on the blocks are like the safety fails compilations we watch at work. Only someone suicidal would get under that thing. Video should include a “do not attempt” disclaimer.
I have a third gen trans am. I am looking at getting into a turbo project for my tpi engine. I'm truly trying to do a budget turbo build. it seems to me the most expensive part is the ECU. what do you think would be the most cost effective ECU for me?
it if is OBD 2 1996 and newer, SCT, Diablosport and some others make great programmers which can have custom tunes created on a dyno. Find a dyno tuner in your area and ask them which software they use for their dyno tuning such as SCT, Diablo, and buy the tuner that their software covers and have them make a custom dyno tune for your set up once you have all your turbocharged parts installed. The custom tune will put everything together and run reliably.
Ecu is not a big deal but the Pistons are ! Don't go through all that blow it up. Stock Pistons won't Handel the turbo or super charger or nitrus. If you don't take my advice, have a spare engine ready.
How reliable are these engines? I understand that the early opti-spark was problematic, and do a water pump at the same time. But as far as longevity, if it was maintained are you looking at 200k before it gets opened up? TIA
Honestly who would go get another 3.4 ? the parts are the same price with the ls1 and they are very unreliable my 3.4 is dead gone and the last thing i wanna do is get another 3.4, i might ls1 swap it if i found a T56 or 3800 swap it and keep my T5
SalemMillion yeah 3.8's are really good I had one in my old 2002 camaro. I had the five speeding in it and I kept up with a guy that had a 2003 GT Mustang automatic
4thGenDude02/BunkAssMechanic LS1 is a lot of work and many parts to replace, a 3800 will be faster and less parts, and thanks for letting me know what a 3.8 can do I honestly never met anyone with a 3800 5 speed manual transmission and I don't know the reliability of the 3.8 as a daily
SalemMillion my old V6 3800 I used every day for 7 years I had about 70,000 miles on it when I traded it and that engine never gave me any issues at all even when I romped it a little bit here and there
chris jenson got in a hit and run last night killed my 97 camaro got a 96 camaro donor z28 gonna swap everything over. Think this might be the quickest.
Dave Obrien 2002 is the last year you could get a 3800 in a Camaro so you can get one but since yours is a 98 you'd have to deal with the drive by wire because 98 is the last year with a throttle cable.
@@dustinguarino7060 It's possible to do with the 5.7 LT1 as well, not sure about the 5.7 LS1 but I assume the same. I did the LT1 head gaskets in the car and it really wasn't that bad other than some side annoyances (rusty collector bolts and the power steering pump is a bitch to pull on these cars).
Grind off the bumper and slide out the motor out since having someone welding won't cost much more than the hospital bill if that car fell and if you woulda died I wouldn't mind not having to worry about that rebuild xD
showing it can be done, it is up to each individual to make sure it is safe enough for their comfort zone to accomplish it. Myself, I would prefer one of those nice lifts but those come at an expensive price for those on budget. As far as medical is concerned, they really need to lower the prices charged for hospital visits. When is the last time you went to a hospital, asked a straight question of how much a procedure would cost and got a straight price answer? The only response they give you is do you have insurance?, and how much does it cover? No straight price for straight procedure. That in itself tells me how corrupt the medical world is.
Ditto. I lowered the kmember to gain a few inches of extra clearance but I didn't have to pull the engine out to change the head gaskets. I was able to strip the engine down to the block without removing it from the engine bay.
my buddies went as well. He called me and said a shop wanted hundreds to fix it. I laughed, took him to Pic a part, and got one out of a Z28 (real Camaro) dropped it right in. no more vibrations, rattles, or stupid crap in the middle. :)
much harder due to the rear firewall of engine compartment covering the back half of the engine. Could be done, anything can be done with enough effort.
This was the most informative 4 minute video I’ve ever watch
Dude thank you so much, I bought a 96 camaro with a bad 3.8 to rebuild and I'm doing this with a buddy this is gonna help me a ton!
I changed the gaskets in my 3.8 .. through the top. What a bloody nightmare.
And after all that the water was still getting into the engine.
Thanks so much for this vid. Now instead of scrapping the car I now have the enthusiasm
I'm not crawling under your car with those jack stands like that.
It does look sketchy, but that is why you would do it your own way.
Na don’t be scared heck some would get under there and make out with their girlfriend
😊🥜🥜🏋️♂️
LOL
😂😂😂 i clicked on this video just to see comments on his jack stands
I replaced head gaskets on a z28 4th gen while it was still in the car, never had to drop it.. 20,000 miles later still good..
Howd you do that?
Brenden Nelson
Tore the engine down under the hood.. piece of cake
Oh shit ! watch out everybody we have a badass over here... Hahaha calm down bitch boi!
Are you a god or something
I replaced my head gaskets without dropping the motor out of the car as well. You have plenty of room lol
Thanks man all the other videos didnt really explain it like that and do the whole go around of it
Just a quick personal fact. I rebuild both heads on my '95 3.4l without removing the engine, and I did it in 3 days on top of it
I did the same , no issues
Great method by far gives the most opportunity to rebuild clean service etc with ease
Dude your amazing
I learned so much just from listening to this straight forward video
Think im gonna actually do this…… my Firebird head gasket just took a shit
Heck that's the way the factory put the motor and trans in...... Good stuff.
Nice.
I did my headgaskets while the engine was in the car. It was the V8 Lt1 engine.
Wasn't that bad though.
Just letting you know, f body 4th gen started in 93.
Please let me know if there is a vid for swapping an LS into this car
Thanks, there's a butt load of those v6's camaroes here there I live. All blown up because butt holes think there fast. Some sell for 300.00$ . I am am older dude and thought I would have to use the cherry picker to remove the engine. But dropping it would be better thanks dude.

+erik61801 Did many Hondas that way my friend

We've done it the traditional way and getting to the bell housing bolts was a major pain.
You can pull the engine from the top with the transmission attached as well.

LOL
Lol, front end probably weighs like 200 pounds without the engine/trans/front suspension attached :D
Does anyone know where I can find a detailed guide with every step on how to do this ?
@TAD just bought another. 2002 with a Ls1 swap. She still Rollin’
Very informative i have a new channel but how you set is perfect and spot on what to do when swapping
How high does the car sit in order to drop it? I have a pretty low ceiling in my garage
Hey dose it have ground on the back of the head

1992.......?.... 😲 Smh he keeps saying it! ... Knowledge
that shit was driving me nuts lol 93 dude....93 lol
Aaron McCracken that’s wtf I was saying
I changed the head gaskets on my 2000 camaro with a 3800 series 2 without dropping or pulling the engine.
How did you do that?
Brenden Nelson alot of patience, a cache of wiggle joints & ujoints, and a Haynes manual. The manual tells you that you don't HAVE to remove engine.
But what if engine has water in it have to pull the whole engine out if your headgasket is fucke
Krock Tv you can usually spot where the gasket failed. My oil wasn't milky, so the gasket failed toward the outside of the block.
How reliable are these engines? I understand that the early opti-spark was problematic, and do a water pump at the same time. But as far as longevity, if it was maintained are you looking at 200k before it gets opened up? TIA
I’m late to the party but my 3800 hit 317000 before I started pulling it our
You helped a lot but now show me how to install a pontiac 400 back in the car!!!!
got almost everything removed trying to prevent this method, but it looks like I'm about to do this soon anyways.
Love this guys personality lmao
Did you do this to stick an LS in there
Honestly who would go get another 3.4 ? the parts are the same price with the ls1 and they are very unreliable my 3.4 is dead gone and the last thing i wanna do is get another 3.4, i might ls1 swap it if i found a T56 or 3800 swap it and keep my T5

Have you ever removed the oil pump?
ok so the bolts are the same to 2005? And I can use my original throttle body? :-)
At 2:50 I felt like Jack Nicholson was telling me how to remove and engine from a 4th gen fbody.
About to tackle this =/ gonna be interesting
chris jenson got in a hit and run last night killed my 97 camaro got a 96 camaro donor z28 gonna swap everything over. Think this might be the quickest.
chris jenson How did it go? U have got to do this to my 2001 Trans Am. I'm dreading it.
whats the newest 3800 i can get from a junk yard for my 98 camaro?
Dave Obrien 2002 is the last year you could get a 3800 in a Camaro so you can get one but since yours is a 98 you'd have to deal with the drive by wire because 98 is the last year with a throttle cable.
Any 3.8 series 2 or 3 will fit. But if you get a fwd motor you have to swap heads, intake, and front Accessories
Wheres the part he shows you how to remove it
🤔 How GM made it from scratch .. such a beautiful minds ..
Ummm I have done v6 3800 head gaskets in a 97 camaro it was pretty easy inside the car😬
Any more 240z updates coming soon?
+Spideryear Yep! We got the head back from Rebello a few days ago, so we'll be making an update video on that this week
Im guessing that you were parting out the car because of the hoses being cut.
I am going to try this with my saturn this morning ..thank you for your tip!!
the head gaskets are Simple to do when engine is in car lol
Right. Lmao. My belt tensioner broke, so I dropped the entire drivetrain for more room to route the belt. 😂😂
Those jack stands look very unsafe.
Invest in a lift!! Great Video..
What do you got with youre legs?
many problems resulting from 21 years worth of Persian Gulf Wars which creeped up on my very quickly.
I think there is a bit more to it than that.
Actually I just done a head gasket job on my 97 Camaro 3.8. With the engine in the car its possible
Keyword 3.8. Not 5.7
@@dustinguarino7060 It's possible to do with the 5.7 LT1 as well, not sure about the 5.7 LS1 but I assume the same. The way you put that thing on the jack stands is dangerous
1993 and up, 92cl is totally different body style
Yea I find it easer to even with the mustang engines
Mustang engines come out easily through the top
EVERYYYYY sideways engine comes out from the bottom > ALSO , BTW !!!
Grind off the bumper and slide out the motor out since having someone welding won't cost much more than the hospital bill if that car fell and if you woulda died I wouldn't mind not having to worry about that rebuild xD

I did head gaskets without moving the engine like that. But I know its best to remove the engine thru the bottom.
I did my heads twice in mine, In the car
Ditto. I lowered the kmember to gain a few inches of extra clearance but I didn't have to pull the engine out to change the head gaskets. I was able to strip the engine down to the block without removing it from the engine bay.
seeing that two piece driveshaft made me throw up a little because I remember when mine broke in the middle of nowhere
my buddies went as well. He called me and said a shop wanted hundreds to fix it. I laughed, took him to Pic a part, and got one out of a Z28 (real Camaro) dropped it right in. no more vibrations, rattles, or stupid crap in the middle. :)
I've done a dozen of heads on those cars without dropping the engine! Smh
Really? How hard is it? I see a car for sale with blown head gaskets
Wat in the fuck kind of driveshaft is that? is that a 2 piece ?
Thats a whole lot of extra bullshit just to pull the engine. I can pull the motor out in 3 hours flat by myself in a driveway
I wouldn't ad this as knowledge if you paid me
You can’t pull the engine from the top huh
much harder due to the rear firewall of engine compartment covering the back half of the engine. Could be done, anything can be done with enough effort.
V6 camaro. Oof
