This is my first ever devlog. Whoop!
Im a solo indie game developer making a 2D platformer focused on speed and inspired by games such as Celeste, Hollow Knight, and Neon White. Its all fairly simple concepts but I'm happy to share what I've learned and the progress I've made.
In this episode I talk about the fundamental force behind Lumina Rush and how I look to give it a speed running flow without the difficult barrier of mastering mechanics that other speed running games require.

Pretty cool game so far. I'm not an expert by any means although I have spent a lot of time playing but primarily making TASes for Celeste. This is a bit of a selfish request and I have no idea how much work this might take but I wonder if you would consider making the game in a different engine? Unity isn't deterministic and it's possible this might make things difficult especially when you have an in game leaderboard. Something like a replay system would be cool to have which would be difficult to implement and it's extremely difficult to make TASes of games made in Unity and this game seems like it would be cool to TAS.
In terms of the gameplay I again I'm no expert and maybe I'm a bit biased but I feel like there's a couple 'problems' that hold the game back a bit. I feel like sliding is too overpowered in the sense that there's never a downside. I found myself constantly holding down the slide button because it is almost always better, you'll go faster, you autoclimb walls, there's just basically no reason to let go of it, it seems. There really needs to be a reason to not be sliding. I also think that the levels feel way too easy and yet kind of frustrating. It feels way too much like a sandbox imo, you don't really need to engage with the level mechanics a whole lot, and I find myself not really thinking about what to do. Really the level design just isn't very engaging.
I think the game has a lot of potential. The movement mechanics are fun to play around with, they remind me of N++ in a lot of ways, but I think sliding is not balanced enough and there needs to be more to engage with than just getting a faster time I think. Interested to see where this goes.

Hey thanks for checking out the game! Also you have some awesome insight! I've definitely considered making the game in a different engine like Godot but wanted to see how far and fun I could make it in Unity since I'm most comfortable with it. I've been throwing the idea of a replay system or previous ghost to be able to beat your previous times but have just recently noticed the whole deterministic problem.
Yea you definitely got me that sliding is a bit too powerful. Its something that I plan on tweaking more as I get better with level design and discovering how easy it is for more casual players to beat levels. In the past I've made mechanics that are a bit difficult to get the hang of, so I have kind of gone in the opposite direction of giving players more power with the mechanic instead of limiting them right away. And just like my level design it is a work in progress, that I look to improve.
Happy you were reminded of N++! It was definitely another inspiration in making this game. Again thank you for the constructive feedback and I hope you'll play it again as the game evolves!

@@BatteredLuteStudios I definitely understand that it's all a work in progress. I think it's an interesting approach and I'm looking forward to see how you continue to develop the game!
