There are all types of rubber soles. I find some of them are much more comfortable than leather - almost like sneakers. Also working in NYC I have plenty of rain, snow and ice. Not to mention walking into the lobby of a building or airport with wet shoes - you want traction.
Yes, based on utility rubber may such be a better choice for your use. There is really no right answer to which is more comfortable it comes down to the individual.
If I didn't have too many shoes already, I'd definitely try my very first Indian made 360 Goodyear welted shoes. Hopefully soon, as my brown wingtip by Steve Madden is not quite comfortable. Clarks dress shoes are too good despite the wear and tinkering required over the last few years. Might as well require resoling.
Leather soles are good for sliding around on tile floors, which I did a lot of in high school. Changed to rubber when things got more serious like finding a job after graduation.
