Another way I've found works pretty well with distinguishing real from fake leather is scratching it with your nail. Fake leather leaves no traces while real leather does.
The problem is how to distinguish fake and real leather in the form of good like jacket, bag or shoes in the store?
We cannot check the inside of the leather, the smell is almost same and we also cannot burn them in the store...
May be look at the pattern..if it is too even, or pattern is the same ditch it.

Exactly! That LV monogram is not even leather. It's fabric/canvas. It's wrong information.

I notice if you dig your thumb nail into leather the small indention quickly disappears or can easily be rubbed out but this is not so with fake leather.

Thanks for your video. Is it possible some unscrupulous sellers from overseas are adding the things that make leather smell, to fake leather or pack fake with real leather, to give them that smell? Because I have what I am really sure is fake, but it smells like real.
Yes! They spray it on like a perfume. It smells exactly like real leather. It really sucks but that’s the kind of world we’re living in these days.

I got the Deon furniture from Leon's. They had two; leather look and genuuine leather. I think I have the genuine leather and it makes me itchy, but nother else I have that is leather makes me itchy.

A product with a tag that says: "Genuine Leather" , is faux/bonded leather which is the lowest quality leather.
Best ones being Full grain and Top grain.
Thanks. I almost bought a pair of faux leather boot because a google search showed that faux is more durable than real leather. Ofcourse I had my doubts because that was from a faux leather furniture company.

Think about it this way one boot causes lots of microplastics that enter your blood and cause havock in your hormonal system and are a good place for developement of patogenic bacteria. The only way is to buy leather boots or train yourself to walk barefoot and develope such a good blood circulation that even frost is not harming. But if you live in a very cold climate like Siberia or Canada leather boots are inevitable.
If you need a belt of non animal product, a synthetic woven web belt is probably the best, and longest lasting. but make sure the buckle does not have a tongue or point as there is a lot of pressure at the adjusting hole which is where fake leather or non leather belts always give way making the belt useless. Aussie saddlemaker here. I bring in non leather belts from USA and Germany for vegan customers. The US buckle has a latch with a magnet which is very secure, an American invention. The German belt has a buckle with a cam roller to make the lock tight. I don't sell many but like to cater for most customers.
@@tianamarie989 yes but as far as i'm aware they have to put a seal on it to protect it from the elements (like there is probably a seal on any wooden furniture you have) and the seal is a type of plastic. i don't think there is yet a bio-based alternative the the seal they use, according to the article i read.
I wouldn't consider the Louis Vuitton wallet a leather wallet - that is coated canvas by the looks of it.

I highly dont recommended the burn smell test. It screwed with my sinuses. Everything I smelled or ate afterwards smelled/tasted like burnt leather.

Unfortunately, when one is purchasing a product being sold as real leather, the only test one can do is to examine the texture of the material. These days dishonest retailers have become very good at making fake leather look deceiving real.
The surface is the louis vuitton wallet that you are showing is not real leather.
Easier way: Press into the material with your thumb. if you see uniform creases, its fake. if you see a wide variation of some deep and some light creases, its real.
The best way is to mention to a guy that you are going to check his leather jeans out with your cigarette. Then see how fast he runs. LOL
Leather is not the skin of a living, breathing animal its the skin of a dead animal. Get it right
using his lv wallet to say its real leather is a bad example. next time use real men's wallet or belt to show the top grain
He left out the easiest way to determine if it's genuine or not... Most products will say right on them and although it could be false, it's so expensive if they get caught that majority won't risk the lawsuit.

And a second question. Is there a more full-proof method of checking if leather is real? Besides GCMS or DNA testing? And I am literally this dang close to buying a GCMS.
Best method I know to make sure leather is real is to look at the grain underneath. This can be seen at the edge of where the leather is cut, for example a buttonhole.

I guess it may be good ethically for some people who are against hurting of animals. But quality and functionality wise it’s just terrible.
Does having a real leather has a higher chance to protect a bag or a wallet?
fake leather is plastic and sheds microplastics every time theyre handled, which gets into the dirt and the water and even the air. so yeah, an individual animal wasnt harmed in the act of its production, but its existence hurts every single animal on the planet. real leather is better for the environment, which in turn is better for animals. if youre really against killing animals, boycotting pleather is the only ethical choice. leather is sourced from the meat industry. ppl wont stop eating meat on a planet wide scale, and even if they did, these animals would still die. its better to use the entire animal than to just take the meat and waste everything else. pleather is crap quality, too, so its killing the planet for a pair of boots that will disintegrate after 2 years.
And what with microplastics that harm hormonal system of yours as well as of animals and plants? Sun rays can make it break too
I could understand to a point people do not want to use leather because it’s “animal based”. But I would rather up cycle this product so it will not go to waste…….then to make fake leather from plastic is just a JOKE!
