Glad to see I'm not the only one here who wanted to see Clopin and footage of Paul Kandel. That note he hits at the end of Bells is so stunning and there's SO little info on this guy out there on the internet.
Yes, why did they choose Alexander for this ? I mean, I have nothing against him but his role isn't major... :/ Why not taking Tony Jay, Tom Hulce, Demi Moore or even Kevin Kline ?
Andyelmasry I was hopeing that they tell how they had balls to do that film but they didn't said a word about the "dark" side of the movie and this is sad to me
INFORMATION on the Music scenes: 12:58 - Separate location? 13:06 - St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, London. 13:07 - Rushworth & Dreaper Apollo organ console.
Funny that Jason says that the gargoyles are the protagonists of Hugo's "Hunchback", when the original doesn't have a specific single protagonist. The main character is most likely Frollo.
No mention of Hellfire anywhere? Hellfire is hands down the best Disney villain songs that has ever existed or would ever exist. Poor Frollo didn’t get much attention
Why wasn't Paul Kandel in this at all? He was the singer for a lot of the songs. He shouldn't definitely been in this. Without him, this movie wouldn't be worth watching.
Dave Purkisma is pretty good at drawing talking gargoyles. He studied hummingbirds in his college days as inspiration for Flit's animation from Pocahontas. Kathy Zielinski is friendly and she's the same person who was pregnant at the time that Aladdin was in production.
+AandM the reason why they didn't talk about Clopin is because he did not want to be identify the guy who played as Clopin. I gotta say judge Claude frollo is my fav or Hugo or Laverne or maybe victor. My personal is quasi (Quasimodo).
As a matter of fact, I remembered that in this movie there's 3 cameo appearances and they are Belle from Beauty and the Beast, The Magic Carpet from Aladdin and Pumbaa from The Lion King. Look for these cameos during the song Out There in the movie.
Is there anyone else who wish this was longer? Or at least not so full of Jason Alexander B.S.? I wanted to hear more about the music and actors! This was not nearly detailed enough!
"Gather around, kids, today we're going to discuss religion, prejudice, lust, and unrequited love!" Seriously, though, I think this documentary was clearly made with just the kiddies in mind, which is why Alexander's dialogue seems so arrogant--he seems to be playing as Hugo rather than himself as the narrator. I agree, though: As a fan of both Victor Hugo and this movie, I'd love to see them do a more adult behind-the-scenes documentary, especially with talking about how they decided to adapt such a grownup tale for children. Aside from the gargoyles, this film doesn't treat its target audience like kids who need to be talked down to, and as someone who read the classics as a child, I appreciate that tremendously when "children's films" do that.
Eh, personally I like how self-aware and occasionally tongue-in-cheek this is (like around the 5:38 mark). The audio commentary is similar, but it has more details about all those things.
+TheaterRaven I do think at some point down the line they should make a more prestigious blu ray release as opposed to the one that got slapped with its god awful sequel. And I know this is one of those Disney films that wasn't the biggest hit when it was released. But it has slowly but surely found its audience. It's not really all that different from how Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, Bambi, and Alice in Wonderland in how they weren't highly regarded back in the day but now everybody talks about how wonderful and artistically brilliant they are.
Isabelle Dzwonczyk, I sooooo agree about Jason Alexander's B.S.! I'll never again see him without painful memories arising about this exercise in smug stupidity.
I would say that Frollo looks like he could have been her father in cartoon format. However, she is the nice daughter that he had out of wedlock with someone one.
5:51 "There is absolutely no question that the three gargoyles of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame will become the most beloved characters in the history of Disney animation." Sorry Jason Alexander, but no.
So clearly shoved in for comic relief. The splendid Mary Wickes, in her final role, was 'strongest' of the three as Laverne; Jason was worst gargoyle *and* the likely the most dreadful Disney miscasting ever.
@@arnepianocanada While the gargoyles probably don't bother me as much as other people, I feel that Laverne and Victor were really the most tolerable ones while Hugo was clearly a more obnoxious version of Timon.
My guess is they were trying to hide all the mature parts of the film so they could show the program on the Disney Channel. I guess they were prepared to hide, like, 95% of the film if that was the case. XD

In his opinion too.

Frollo is probably the best villain of the Disney Renaissance
Too bad after all their hard work, this movie was so underrated... more than Hercules :(
And nobody talks about Paul Kandel as Clopin???
I was thinking the same thing
Yep.....I wanted to see that.
Inés Amaral Paul's vocals are so captivating!
Yeah, it's like Yellow Submarine WITHOUT mentioning Geoffrey Hughes as Paul
Aww! They forgot about Clopin. D:
If they got Tony Jay to host this, maybe I could take it a bit more seriously.

EmmanuelleLunada2010 yeah... I'm reading it and it's mostly about Claude Frollo and Esmeralda- even Quasimodo seems less important in the book
Yeah, Jason was definitely poking fun at the Victor Hugo purists who were mad about the talking gargoyles (who weren't in the book at all).
@@jhopewell4208 ...Notre Dame? As in the church?
Boy, Mickey sounded ticked when he heard that the gargoyles would be memorable characters.
Don't worry, Mick. You're a memorable character, too.
+Jimmy Campbell (CNFanLDEalt3) It's almost as if Disney had a premonition that the gargoyles weren't going to go well with critics.
Good thing this was before the Kingdom Hearts days else Jason would have really been terrified at seeing a little mouse wielding a key sword.
I've never heard Mickey get so P.O.ed! LOL
I have in a few cartoons as well as Kingdom Hearts.

Jason Alexander was voice of Hugo one of gargoyles
