Pet Rat Diet - Requested

  • Rats are cheap pets to have because their diet is not expensive. I find that it is actually cheaper to feed them fresh food instead of commercial packaged rat food. But that is not why I feed my rats this way. Real food is simply more healthy and natural than anything processed and in a bag.
Most commercial rat food is full of Alfalfa and Dried Corn, both of which are harmful to rats. If you want to feed your rats packaged rat food make sure that this ingredient is not in it. If fresh food is not an option for you, Oxbow Adult Rat food is a good choice.
For more information about pet rats watch my pet rat care video • Pet Rat Care
If you want to learn why packaged food is unhealthy you can watch my video about why raw diet is great for dogs. This video is about feeding dogs a raw diet, but you will learn a lot about the dangers of processed food. • Video

My boys go crazy over quinoa. They also love water melon, cucumbers, Romaine lettuce, cooked cream of wheat with a tiny bit of raw honey, yogurt, cooked mashed sweet potato with almond milk to keep it from getting too sticky, they also love dog treats that I either make, or healthy grain free dog treats that have veggies and fruit instead of meat, and are not processed. Loved your video and all the foods you mentioned, my boys get and love. Eggs...I scramble them as I am scared to death of choking on the yolks.

Thank you so much! One of my boys has frequent diahorrea with almost all foods and only recently I realised it was his lab block as its the only constant which contains wheat. After consulting a vet and getting stool we've confirmed he doesn't have IBS but does have a wheat allergy! Wheat is in all commercial rat foods. So thank you for giving me plenty of ideas for alternative foods for him. I have been giving them mostly raw foods (broccoli, kale, nutrient dense lettuces, watermelon, courgette, peas, carrots, celery etc with the odd boiled egg and some grains) but I think I should start giving them more cooked food to help the food break down before he eats it as his stomach seems very sensitive. They all are completely disinterested in fruit for some reason, but it does prevent them getting too much sugar!

And what you say. You are professional, so that is so much better than hearing 14 different random people online talking about their personal ideas. I am SO happy that I found you!!! Question: Is it okay to feed them pumpkin? And will pumpkin need to be cooked or can it be raw? As for bananas, can rats eat the skin/ peel of a banana? Or is that bad for them?

I read that once a week you need to give your rat a boiled egg, but now you say that it’s bad. I already gave them it. Is it bad? Should I don’t do that again?

      Sorry for being so late!
Rats don’t really have a “how many times a day” in the subject of food. (wow that was a weird sentence)
The only rule is, that they should always have exassible food.
I feed my rats twice a day but I feed them quite alot of food, so there’s always some.

Me and my pal have only been together a few days but we're bonding so well! He's really funny and such a character. His eating habits though are taking me a lot longer to grasp. He's a big fuss pot. He generally isn't too interested in anything I've offered him so far as treats (cheerios, grapes, cheese, apple). He snatched a cooked potato off my plate when I was eating one time so I gave him some of that. Maybe I should try cooked foods for treats? He likes cucumber and peanuts but nothing grabs his attention for real. Any rat owners have fuss pots!? And what do you use for treats?

Such as, for example: 3 parts leafy greens, 3 parts grains and cooked corn, 1-2 parts peas and beans, 1 part animal protein and occasional dairy, 2 parts fruit or non-leaf veg... and things like appropriate levels to keep starchy foods like apples and potatoes at? Just trying to get a basic idea of overall proportions to aim for say over a few days to a week.

Please don't get only one rat. And dont get your rats from a pet store, look for breeders. And most importantly do lots of research

I’d just like to point out your beta tank....they need at least a 5 g tank and are tropical fish so they need a tank heater...I’m hoping you’ve sized up already...bigger tank with warmer water will also help your beta keep his coloring.

Right now my rat is eating store bought rat pellets… and I always feel so bad that he has to have the same exact tasteless pellets everyday that aren’t even good for him… so I’m planing on starting him on a non processed healthy fresh diet :D so this video was very helpful! ( the pellets have made all my rats overweight and passed away so Blake is the only one I have left 😞and he is a food lover so he definitely needs some good, healthy, well tasting, fresh food 😙💞

I feed my rats Mazuri brand rat food along with fresh veggies every night. I also give them yoggies maybe 2 or 3 times a month, baby puffs, and since they are cheap now they also get a pumpkin seed as a treat after cage cleaning. I also give them scrambled egg or chicken and sometimes tuna or salmon as a protein twice a week. But despite all that, they still feel the need to take whatever I am eating. Rats will be rats but I love em

Can U make a video describing how U pick foods for a meal?
Each picture had a nice mix, but I saw kale twice, and otherwise it was hard to figure out the rules behind the plates.
Certain amount of fruit per meal or week? Proten balance per meal? Certain amount of protein from plants vs animal sources? How much human grains?
I guess, is there a formula per meal, per day per week?
I hope I asked my question clearly, sorry, that was a bit difficult to find wording for.
Thank U for sharing Ur beautiful pet diet! :)

Your rats are soooo cute! Thank you for all your info. I just got a sweet boy, named him Jesse. He's very smart! I've had pet rats in the past but this guy is different. His ears turn about, listening to everything, even cars going down the road. I would like to know how to teach them tricks. I'm trying to teach Jesse to jump to my hands. Jesse sits on me or in a little bag I made for several minutes while I pet him. Rats are smart and make great pets! The people that have negativity on here should go do research before getting on here complaining.

Do you have 1 rat? Because if you have, PLEASE, by another one!!! Rats are feeling lonely when they haven't a friend where they can play with. Maybe you're always home, that doesn't matter they need a friend of there kind.

Thanks for the video! How about quantities, and for different stages of life? Yound, middle-age, and old rats? I find it hard to get the quantities right with "normal" food compared to pellets. Thanks!
