I always struggle to stay listening, as a health care practitioner I tend to always listen while finding ways to help and want to jump in and help, but have learned over the years to be patient and wait for their cues thanks for sharing all these tips!
thank you for giving much information i have many ways of lacking when it come to conversation i will listen to you r videos so that i can improve my listening skills it taught me where i lack.
I became a better listener when I got out of my head and stayed in the moment and also was not stressing that I should always have something to follow up with or participate in every conversation.
5 points to note; 1. Not paying attention: It is easy to get distracted by other things (sometimes under the guise of multitasking) as you’re having a conversation. However, it takes your attention away from what the other person is saying. The more stimuli around to distract a person such as cell phones or a nearby television-the less likely they are to actively listen to the person speaking. 2. Interjecting with a personal anecdote: It may seem helpful to sympathize or relate to the speaker by offering your own experience. However, this habit can make the speaker feel like you’re not fully respecting their story and simply want to turn the attention to yourself. 3. Judging the speaker: Some people tune out or get defensive if someone shares an opinion they disagree with. The listener may shut down and refuse to relate, which prevents a potentially meaningful conversation. 4. Not asking questions: Not asking follow-up questions about the speaker’s story can indicate poor listening skills. Asking questions shows engagement and curiosity and makes the other person feel heard. 5. Talking over the speaker: Good listeners rarely cut someone else off to comment with their own opinion. It can send a message that your thoughts are more important than theirs. A silence or momentary pause is not always a reason to insert your own story, rebuttal, or belief. 6. Waiting to talk: Formulating a response while the speaker is talking results in distracted listening. If you appear more interested in telling your own story than listening, it can degrade your personal and professional relationships. The other person may not feel heard, making them less inclined to have conversations with you in the future.
I really like the question, "what question did a I fail to ask here to understand your reality?" It reminds me that I may not always be tuned into them and focused on their perspective.
I continue to improve as a listener using the following two principles: 1. I keep reminding myself how I have personally felt when the other person was quite obviously not giving me their full attention, and I've been narrating what I felt was important to me. 2. I remind myself of the high impact conversations and coaching sessions I've had with those I work with, where I've been able to highlight THEIR successes simply by "listening" to what they were saying; successes they were not even cognizant of conveying in their narrative...and the resulting shine in their eyes and lift in their shoulders when I've been able to do so. There is little that is as gratifying as knowing you have had such an impact on another human being!
Much respect Al-Riyaz for this thoughtful approach and comment. Sounds like the effective coaching that helps people remove their blinders by finding out where to look. Keep changing lives my friend!
This is so important! I feel like modern technology has so many of us more and more distracted by the day. I agree with doing some of your own research and truly caring & understanding the other person in order to carry out meaningful conversation. Loved the video and also love your presence as well! So clear and professional :)
Every time I hear someone talk about listening, I think "I've got to do that." Then I forget it about it until the next time I hear someone recommend it. I loved the video and your recommendations though. Thanks.
This video & content was bang on & so insightful to help support us to all become better listeners. My favorite tip was, "how over preparing will give you confidence, but stepping into their uncertainty by listening & improvising will give you CONNECTION." That was amazing. Second biggest take away for all of us to practice is to not try to fix, give advice or interrupt. Something I will always have to consciously work on. What changed my listening & my life to be honest was being present & to actively listen vs thinking of my next question or response- which you also covered. I am sharing this video with my corporate teams. This video is going to help us create deeper & more authentic connections! So well done! Thank you!
Being an introvert i’ve always genuinely been a good listener yet i still benefited a lot from this video. There is always room for improvement right? :)
I love tip # 3: Listen with your eyes. I never heard it put like that before but makes much sense. Non verbal cues are very important and essential to pay attention to. Loved your content thank you!
Asking powerful questions is so important so that now you are listening to something that the other person actually wants to talk about. These are such good tips. Thank you!
Thank you so much dude. This is an incredible video. I'll do my best to apply these. Btw, something that does help A LOT when it comes to listening, is meditation.
I love the wisdom you bring to this Riaz. Most of us struggle with this and I'm not always a great listener. I especially like your point that an active listener asks the questions that helps someone discover the meaning behind their experience. Brilliant!
Fantastic video on listening! Loved hearing your perspective on this as a journalist. I have a background in psychotherapy, so I was trained to be a listener. And, with that being said, there were things you mentioned here that I hadn't thought about before. So, that was cool. With the last point of taking notes, I know that stat is true, however, I'm a horrible listener when it comes to taking notes. I usually retain more if I have my eyes focused on the person the whole time and take notes shortly after. Different strokes for different folks!
Thanks V. Your point is a good one. Taking notes is good when working on the skills to focus and retain. Now, I take all notes as soon as the convo is over - the writing and reflection after allows me to be fully present in the moment then reflect on the meaning of what was just said by writing it down after.
Hi Riaz, new to your channel and great topic. Listening...something we don't do enough. I had to learn and now I LOVE listening and NOT talking. I subscribed too and thanks for your support too!
Thank you for this video! I'm always working on my listening skills as an insurance broker. I am naturally a good listener (an introvert growing up) which has served me well in my sales career believe it or not! Can you post videos regarding communicating over the phone? We are all stuck inside and a lot of business is done via phone right now. Would love to hear your tips!

Love that Christina “get out of your own head” an easy trap for all of us to get caught in
Listening with the eyes, makes such a big difference. I always notice people'e presence through whether they are making eye contact with me or not!
This is a big one and a new challenge as we get used to communicating through screens. It gets lost so quickly.
So true! Engage with eye contact, body posture, not just the ears : )

I get excited and blabber. So I’ll try opening my conversations with “what’s on your mind today?” And “ how did it go?”
"Asking questions that you can't Google" Love that!
Thanks Katy!
I love Stephen Covey's habit of seeking first to understand, then to be understood. This helps me to be a better listener
That’s a classic! Thanks Carol
