The last 25 years of his playing are rather unfortunate. I do however, admire that he helped start Metallica, and played a part in shaping the sound of their 80's albums (which, I like many others think are their best).

This is a perfect example of how narrow marketing has affected the music industry. Gone are the days when we actually get good music in the mainstream. All we get is a bunch of 'good looking, or hot' people that make non-music, marketed to tweens - late teens. I've had people that listen to modern stuff go, "you listen to music from the 60s-80s? Why are you so stuck in the past with your dad's music?" It's just plain sad.
modern music is extremely diverse, you just have to look for great ones. Lastfm, maybe? There are tons of great modern music, and no one notice that, because it's waay easier to say "modern music is crap!" and blame the world. You have choice. By the way, I listen to great music from 80's, 70's, 60's... 40's... even from 18-19-th centuries, great music have no expire date. People, who tell to you, that you are "stuck" - just fashion victims...

I used to think the same thing but saw a video proving myself wrong. We think mainstream songs from the 60 through 90s were great songs however most the songs that were mainstream songs back then were just the average pop songs however we only remember the really good songs that have endured the test of time.
