I meant to say ...falling back TO chopping when other take breaks and leave the finger rolls for a while..I play with many guys who just simply finger roll through the entire song, as if they entire song is their break.
I agree, they should quiet down for the guitar... It makes all the difference between being a good vs. great bunch of pickers being able to hold back on volume for the sake of other instruments. Not to "pick" on the banjo specifically, but I notice that most banjo players (and even the "pros") have little sense of dynamics with volume at appropriate moments and also with falling back on chopping when others take their breaks, especially the guitar.
I know I'm almost a decade late lol, but you also have to consider the fact they are in a narrow foyer. Not to mention whatever device is "recording" this I'm sure does not have the best sound pickup.
Went to a bluegrass band contest last week. My old banjo buddy, who's been playing for about fifty years said about one of the bands, "They're good at playin', but that ain't bluegrass!" Well, this IS bluegrass and what a pleasure it is to see and hear the real thing!
Wow! That's freaking cool. The bass player is Jason Moore and the mandolin player is Aaron Ramsey, both in Mountain Heart. Glad I found this. Thanks for posting.
@cc9fingers If you don't understand what I said, maybe a Bluegrass 101 class would help. But I'm sure glad you know who Tony Rice is. "Awesome" would be everyone playing quiet while he took his break, so we could hear what he played!
@tyler2659 the song is "Gonna Settle Down" by Lester Flatt. this song was on The Bluegrass Album with Rice, Crowe, B.Hicks, D. Lawson, & Todd Phillips on bass.
Love to see Tony Rice smile. The man is a bullet proof stoic player! The banjo player was pretty dang good. Anybody know who made his banjo? Great job all, you lucky bastards.
Great band but, why does the banjo player keeps on picking while Tony is taking a break? And the rest of the band also needs to be more sensible to the guitar and quiet down! Especialy with somebody like TONY !
It is too bad we can't hear Tony's break . . . but . . . to be fair to the banjo player (who's pretty good), I'll bet those present could hear the guitar better than we can on the video. The average camcorder or phone doesn't do a very good job at picking up guitar in a situation like this. Plus, guitar breaks in a circular jam are notoriously hard to hear. That's why Tony Rice and other bluegrass lead guitar players normally play their music on stage, with a mic. It's probably why Tony deferred to the other musicians until the end; he knew his break wouldn't be all heard in this environment. He probably finally played a break because someone practically insisted.
Y’all drowned out Tony Fuckin Rice!.... Or maybe it’s the recording, but if not the recording, damn...ease up, guitars are already less louder than yalls 🤣
Typically banjo player....lol.... No volume control!!! I wonder if this is why Tony release the first bluegrass album without a banjo on it.... Lol... Not trying to offend the banjo player, just hoping maybe he understands the need for volume control.!!!
Like when to play and when not to play. Soften up when doing backup. Play up on the head area for a softer tone. I had that experience with an excellent banjo player in a band .He never stopped rolling all of the time. Still we survived it but practising better dynamics on his part may have made us sound even better. Watch JD - how he is back and forth - playing lead then back up - letting the singer sing and be heard.

When u realize you're singing the 3rd verse twice,u just roll with it!!! Awesome jam!!!
As a banjoist, that banjo player tragically played all over Tony's break.
Patton was one of the best in the business until his stroke.
Man, that looks like a good time. Wish I was there.
