- The Tony Rice Unit with Josh Williams performs "Nine Pound Hammer" on May 14, 2011 at the Unitarian Center in Hamden, CT. Brought to you by Less Than Face Productions.
All these years later, I still feel good, very good about having attended this show and having made this video. An amazing moment in my life. Bless you all. It was for you.
Appreciate you making this video!
Thx so much!!!
Hey man, I was at this show too. I hadn't run into you video until today. Thanks for capturing that special moment. I can't believe how long it has been.
We lost a bluegrass legend. Hopefully the last kick in the nuts for me in 2020. We love you Tony RIP
Josh Williams is one of the most amazing musicians in Nashville.
Tony Rice was simply the very best. No one will ever top him.
right....the very best .
Tears of joy here. Remembering nights at The Down Home in Johnson City, TN where we sat in awe the year of 1988. There will never be another one close to Tony.
Tears for a passing brought me here. RIP Tony
Tony's smile during the dobro solo is great
Tony showed the world what a D-28 was for. He has no peers. RIP my friend.
Just try counting Mr. Rice's hammers and pull-offs...that would make for a great math thesis. I was lucky enough to see him in concert. Simply the best!
What an amazing talent. A fantastic band. Mr. Rice you are the epitome of class and an inspiration. Thank you sir.
*A grateful fair-thee-well*
What a soul! Deepest respect for a man, the top of the American pickers .whose transcendent play, spanned generations
Has got to be one of the best clips of Tony ...his facial expressions tell it all, he's luvin it! All amazing musicians!!
I was literally front row center that night with my wife and child and it was the most enjoyable show I’ve ever been to. Sure he was a little past his prime but who cares- it’s Tony Rice!
Tony passed away last night. RIP Mr. Rice
Ricky Simpkins on fiddle, brother Wyatt on guitar, Bryn Bright onbass, I think, Rob Ickes on dobro
How about that bass player! ..Tony Rice set the standard for all of us pickers' .. Fabulous job ALL ! WOW
Bryn Davies.. She is The Bomb!!
Great video great music great players. Excellent Excellent Excellent!
Nice. I recognize some of those licks from “splitting the licks”. Actually been working on that one myself recently. Thanks for the ideas.
Tony Rice, you are dear to the hearts of many!
Tony's solo here is from another planet
Top notch musicians right there!
Tony inspired alot of musicians.
Tony Rice.. GOAT.. RIP
'The song has ended, But the melody still lingers' ...
Aaaaaamazzzzing!! Love you guys!!
You know you can play dobro when Tony Rice digs your solo. Of course then Tony gets up and takes things off planet, but still...
God Bless Tony Rice 💕
Not only is it hard to play such a long solo, but its just as hard for the rest of the musicians to keep the rhythm up, to keep the changes in there mind, and keep in time. It's mind boggling how good they are.
His speaking voice always surprised me every bit as his astounding picking.
ultimate!
The king plays eyes closed
man, that guy just can't stop picking
Well, that was fun :-)
Nice one, Josh! I never heard you play mandolin.
My hero
Wyatt Rice seemed to be tearing up there a little during Tony’s pass on the runs…..I can understand why! Thx for posting……🎸❤️🎸✝️
Thanks for watching Marcus!
If you could get Tony to grin and shake his head from a break you’ve done something, heck of a dobro
"Earth to Tony..... Earth to Tony....."
WOW
It's cool you could really see how much the other guitar player really looks up to TR
If I'm not wrong that is his brother Wyatt Rice.
@@karatemonkey2189 I think you're right :)
I seem to see tears welling up in Wyatts eyes while Tony was soloing……
Wyatt is Tony’s little Brother and one hell of a picker in his own right.
Oh the places you've been. Damn.....
WOW untouchables josh williams can wear out guitar as well bass player has an awesome voice, anyone know who she is?
Bryn Davies
bass player was the bomb 💣 😅
Oh my...
Wow ive really never heard Wyatt solo before
I've heard him do some breaks, but not like that, I'm impressed!!
Check out Emerson and Goble Dixie in my eye album, Wyatt is just phenomenal
You should go check out his bands album. I think it may have been self titled called "Wyatt Rice and Santa Cruz" it's probably one of my favorite albums. It's incredible just how talented all of the Rice brothers are but Toby and Wyatt are just out of this world when it comes to their skills on the guitar.
Is that Simpkins still on the fiddle! Holy wow. I mean Tony sure ripped it up and brought it all home. But that is the best fiddle break I ever heard. And I have been around bluegrass literally all my life.
That's it, if you ever have Tony and Rickie on stage, then the 8- and 16- and 32-measure break rule no longer applies.
It'd be nice to have the names of all the band members listed.
what just happened?
oh wyatt rips one here
Wyatt never gets the credit he deserves.
Was Ricky Simpkins a member of the Tony Rice unit or a special guest at this show?
Not to be morbid, but I hope whenever Tony does eventuality pass that they all play this song at his service along with Wayfaring Stranger.
Who is the fiddler?
That would be Rickie Simpkins.
It was really hard to watch Tony struggle through that solo he was really having a hard time for some reason
He’s got a lot of pain in his left hand.
arthritis i imagine he was suffering pretty good at the later time in his career
@@joshuahymer15 Thanks,I did'nt know.
Yes but Tony was doing what he loved and was born to do. I hope I am that lucky in the end. Cheers
Tony first expierienced arthritis and radial nerve damage in his left hand and elbow and then developed tendonitis in his right hand.
Wonderful to hear them play, but Tony looked like he was in some real pain. Sometimes the Winds of Fate go in unexpected directions. It can be best to reinvent yourself and move on.
Well he did that
Tony is gonna break his face with that frown.
Tony is of course a legend.Wyatt is an excellent player also but they both struggled horribly to get through their solos. They both seemed lost and unsure of what to do and where to take thier solos.
No dummy. That’s actually how real flat pickers sound. It’s imperfect, modern day, extended improvisational playing, something you obviously know very little about. Now go practice.
Tony's cancer is in late stages now and he's being propped up by his friends. Cudos for just being there.
Kenny Girard propped up? Don't see it one bit. That song melody he pulls out at 7:37 starting with a harmonic and then chording is simple and genius. Pure Tony Rice!
Kenny Girard this video is almost 8yrs old
Kenny Girard I know these are old comments but I agree with you on this one. Not only that but for some reason Wyatt seemed lost as well and could not get it together until the last few seconds. It was kind of painful to watch both of them struggling during their solos.
@@livingroompickersclub6358 Mate wyatt wasnt that lost i felt really bad for tony because that strong willed legend guitar player was there but also present was arthritis and joint issues.
WTF are you talking about. He doesn't have cancer.
Josh can pick a fit but that polished Nashville voice ain't bluegrass
It definitely is bluegrass
@@traerose5599 if you like pop country, then you think it's bluegrass. If you're name is spelled like a white person's, then no it's not bluegrass
Maybe you could take his place....🎶🎵🎶
