Much as I’d love to see Fagan interviewed, he always strikes me as being slightly awkward in interviews, so I do hope that Rick could bring the best out of him.
Not killer killer each one. Certainly most of them. Some people are sick of The Dan radio hits. I love the single B side of Bohdisatva Live, with long (drunken) Bill Cosby intro. Just insane.
Steely Dan was on another level production wise, and, getting the "tones" and emotion out of a composition. We'll never hear that painful brilliance in this current environment. Rick, your great man
I have no friggin' idea what Rick is talking about. Here's what I know: Years ago, the newsroom I ran was debating the greatest rock bands, and I said, " Steely Dan." They all disagreed, so I fired the lot.
When I saw & cranked this, first thing I thought was slash chords. My affinity for SD is lifelong (I'm 69). Walter was and Donald is so flowing and influential. You always break it down and show us that you love them as much as we all do. The harmonies here are so fluid. Takes me back to college everytime the needle hits the vinyl. Thank you
I became a fan in 1974 when I heard "Rikki". Been a fan ever since. But it was the Aja album that came out in the fall of '77 when I was a freshman in college, that just cemented Steely as one of the greatest bands of all time. The best song on this album, Katie Lied, is actually "Any World (that I'm welcome to)". They should have released that as a single back then. I also love the song, "Barrytown", which usually never gets mentioned as one of Steely's best songs.
I saw SD live in Erie Pa of all places right before Walter Becker passed away. Honestly the best concert I’ve ever seen. That band was so tight and especially Jon Herrington absolutely killed it on guitar.
28:19 the B11/A major with B in bass playing the arpeggio between b and a the sound your creating is going into zappa realms for me but i agree such a lovely lovely flavor/sound this is why your channel is by far the best on the net Rick
I recreated this tune last year in my home studio and loved trying to figure it out. Rick I could never get the technical stuff in my head but I did it all by ear. Fascinating and super Fun! It’s not at Steely Dan level but I’m proud of it :-) great episode Rick .. as always 😎🤙
Rick, I love those “Steely” chords you pointed out so cleverly! I call them the “Deacon” chords with those warm ambiguous bazaar tones. Beautiful and mysterious!!! They have so much dimension to them. I appreciate so much the dissection and guts of the song you take us through!!! You are the best and you make it fun and beautiful involved!!! Best all!! 🙏👍✌️
Thank you, Rick ! Elliot Randall, yes. Love when you plug your Music Lesson Packs during your videos, so we know where you teach different info and techniques. Always Be Closing : )
Love that "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" quote that ends Becker's guitar solo! Also... another cool Dan "mutated blues" tune that would be fun to analyze is "Pretzel Logic."
I don’t know if you’ve interviewed Rick Derringer before, but I have know him for many years years and he as down to earth and humble as one gets. Of course he discovered Weird Al, played on Countdown to Ecstasy, performed, wrote for and engineered songs for numerous artists including Johnny Winter.
@ that’s the first time I’ve heard of that potential aspect of that song. Dean Parks and Jeff Skunk Baxter are credited for the guitar work on that song. Have a great day.
A magnificent video Rick. A perfect analysis of one of their many masterpieces. They used many great guitarists, but invariably from the rock/blues/session worlds, never one in the pure be-bop mode of Benson, Pass, or Martino. I wish they had. You also could have been a perfect fit for much of their material! Your scale demo’s on here are sublime.
Hey Rick, always a pleasure. Your show is so very informative, and in so many diverse ways. Highly appreciated man. (nice colour on the SG) One thing I would like to note, is that when music is dissected, it isn't murdered, the way a joke dies. Steely Dan are one of my favourites (although a Zappaphile) with a rich complexity for the ears.
And "Countdown to Ecstasy - "Bodhisattva" - phenomenal Becker and I think Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on never ending guitar riffage for the ages. And "Any Major Dude" from Pretzel Logic. Deserves it's own musical breakdown - as it's just so incredibly original and well-written. These are truly songs for the soul!
Few "bands" had a run like Steely Dan -- quality control was on point with Becker and Fagen. By the way, Becker played lead guitar on this track, using Denny Dias's Fender Tele.
Rick, so glad you do these exposés on STEELY DAN. They are an amazing, amazing band. And they are from the USA. Congratulations on the David Gilmore Interview. Nicely done. Almost like Dick Cavett! My little Christmas wish ... That you expand your coverage to THE SMITHS. You are almost there - you covered the Cure. So you must know THE SMITHS and JOHNNY MARR's magic. Thank you Rick!!
Wonderful analysis! Thank you Sir. You must be well excited about the George Benson thing; especially since there's all these huge cats you've yet to meet. I just LOVE this blue SG you're playing there, and that sound with the delay is PERFECT. Nice one Rick! 🎶🌟👍
To anyone enjoying these, or the WMTSG series - if you want to elevate the experience, pick one that Rick has done that you love, and analyze it on your own before watching, then come back and compare what you find with what Rick finds. I’m doing it with Kansas (because I’m not knowledgeable enough for Steely Dan yet) and am holding off on watching Rick’s WMTSG coverage. It’s a seriously fun time. Also shoutout to Rick for making a one-time purchase course instead of a subscription. I bought several courses from other instructors and they all follow a subscription model, but when it comes to theory, you really need to take your time and digest each section - which does not work well with monthly platforms. You end up spending way more and getting way less accomplished on a monthly subscription.
35:15 I'm the guy who kept asking about an hypothetical Donald Fagen interview, I wanted to thank you for replying and apologize if I insisted to the point of being spammy. I really wanted to know if something was going on behind the scenes as he's the one guy I really want to see interviewed after you interviewed my other two idols, Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau (I'm still so happy and grateful you made it happen, thank you). I also hope my question didn't make you sad, you seemed really frustrated when you replied, I guess you must've tried multiple times to make it happen but to no avail. I wish you the best in that regard, not only because I would be overjoyed if it happended, but also because I think you would be as well and you honestly deserve it. Best of luck!
Donald Fagen's wife, singer/songwriter Libby Titus Fagen, passed away recently. It's unlikely that the Don will be doing any interviews soon. Let's give him some space and grace.
That Becker solo was so impressive. Really adventurous in time feel and phrasing, yet always landing back in the pocket and on melody. He should have taken more of SD’s solos himself.
Great Video as usual Rick, at 13:15 when your talking about these blues licks having both major and minor 3rds in them and you play the 3 chords E7 A G with the hammer on the 3rd on the E, i think players like Donald will have got these licks from miles davis kind of blue all blues

"When black Friday comes...I'll fly down to Muswellbrook". A bit of trivia: Muswellbrook is a tiny rather obscure town in NSW Australia, known for mining, horse breeding and being the birthplace of one Tommy Emmanuel.
Rick....this is such a musically intelligent channel. There is something for everyone ...from the beginner, inter, adv and pro levels. I would consider myself on the pro level and I just enjoy and love the material you share. To me, it's never a waste of my limited time. @ 20 mins...you talked about Becker's guitar playing. In my opinion, he is a really nice "parts" player but when it comes to soloing over changes I'd rather hear Carlton, parks etc. They really shape their solos and take you on a journey. After listening to your Mike Stern interview and knowing his music, his sound, tone, soloing shapes etc.... it would have been awesome to hear some stern on these solos. Lastly....thank you for interviewing audio engineers....that is information and back stories we would NEVER ever have access to on any other platform. Don't forget about the "new undiscovered artist" series you promised us 🙂
Hey Rick how about trying to score an interview with the "GREAT Carol Kaye,As you probably know she was part of the "Wrecking Crew"and she will be turning 90 soon and she is a pioneer Bass player and if anyone can make it happen you can!
This classic piece always stood out for me when I was around 15/16, getting into music and weed. I'd sometimes go hang out with the older guys because they listened to stuff better than the mainstream and It made me feel really cool and grown. Don't Take Me Alive was another stand out track.
Boddhisattva solos were Denny Dias first with his bebop style, then Jeff Baxter who went with a rockabilly kind of approach. Later when The Best (supergroup featuring Baxter, Joe Walsh, Keith Emerson, etc.) played the tune, Baxter took the Dias changes, but with his distinctive style, then Emerson soloed, and Walsh played the ending solo. Pretzel Logic title track has some unusual chord changes for the guitar solo, which was played by Becker in the studio, though they had Baxter solo on it live.
Awesome video of going into detail on the great song "Black Friday"! Oh, and that Breezin' with the Stars retreat sounds absolutely incredible!!! I was going to say that if I lived in or near that area in Arizona, I would go to it! I unfortunately realized that I am severely lacking the funds to be able to attend it. I hope there may be at least some video footage available online after that great retreat! It would definitely be a guitarist's dream come true to be able to attend during that awesome weekend retreat. That Wigwam resort sure looks very nice and classy!
The two Walter Becker solo's that stand out most to me are the ones on 'cousin dupree' and, most of all, 'pretzel logic'. The way that last one culminates over the chord changes is pure magic.
I remember soloing (improv) over this at a jam. The guy who played and sang it, didn't take a solo and after said he didn't think he could do as good as my shot. He was no slouch either. He played Holdsworth/Ford style, lived close to AH, and actually had lessons from him before he was famous. Also played in a covers band with him. which he described as 'scary'. Wish there'd been a recording of it. I was just 'going for it' and forgot about that chord sequence, just trying not to stumble, so I must have played something that fit!
Love you, Rick!! I'm a music fanatic and, you definitely keep my interest piqued...I would love to hear you do a deep dive on the tune "Dr. Wu" from the often-overlooked Dan album.." Katy Lied". Great job on "Black Friday"
Rick - I'll be at the George Benson retreat in Phoenix. I can't wait to meet you. I have no right to be there but this is a bucket list item I didn't know I ever had to meet my guitar heroes, including yourself!🙏🏼
Black Friday is my go to SD song to pick up my spirits/energy. Jimmy Reed meets Neil Young's Mr Soul and gets the modern treatment by Fagan/Becker! Too cool!
Lots of suggestions for Steely Dan songs you can analyse, but perhaps one day you could do "Your Gold Teeth II"? I've never been able to work out the chords of the intro and bridge for that one and it's not in the published sheet music. And it would be brilliant if you could interview Donald Fagen when he's in a position to appear in public again. (RIP Libby Titus Fagen)
This was an era where virtuosity informed musicality. With Steely Dan in particular, it makes more sense to analyse them from a jazz perspective than a rock one.
Jeff Porcaro is actually not on every song. That's Hal Blaine on Any World (That I'm Welcome To). Also, it's David Paich and Michael Omartian share piano and keys duties throughout the album, so I'm not as sure as you are that it's Fagen on keys on Black Friday.
The other “forgotten drummer is Paul Humphrey “ I’ve never heard or mention anywhere the back story on Hal on that track they choose the drummers for the fit of the song I can’t see anybody playing it better Jeff or Jim Gordon could hang Jeff was my fav
Hello little brother, have you ever considered an introspective look at the genius of Lowel George with Little Feat? The drums alone are an entire episode, let alone . But add Bill Payne and the boys..a rete mixture of the best road music. Just a thought. Much love paizan
I play this in my band. On the chorus the open high E string throughout the first 2 measures with the A G F# G is key. I play the F shape on all 3 with the E open. Just a different way to do it. I play the A/B on the second fret.
Hello Rick, I hope this message finds you well! I’ve been a long-time subscriber and have learned so much from your channel over the years. I just wanted to express my gratitude for all the valuable knowledge you share.I was wondering if you have plans to create a video about "Glamour Profession" from Steely Dan's Gaucho. Thank you, and I hope you stay healthy!
I have a full band transcription in a Hal Leonard book and they have it written against an Em key signature, and the main vamp riff ending on Em. But you're right, Rick - it's an E blues.
Rick, as a guitar teacher myself of 25 years, I'm noticing that despite "Boomer Bends" being a joke here on the channel at one point, much like Zappa, you do not bend all that much. I may have counted 3 total which is pretty interesting. It seems as you improv your arpeggios and runs, you rarely bend. Thank you for this video. Steely Dan is something special.

I just looked the website for that event… what a POWERHOUSE of talent!
What an experience that’s gonna be! 🎸🎸🎸
Too cool!
Please have the phenomenal Phil Keaggy interviewed!!!!
@@brucemacdonald876 ha!
I’ve just suggested the same song. I’d love Rick to dissect Denny Dias’ sublime solo too.
I enjoyed learning about what makes this song so great
This was an era where virtuosity informed musicality. With Steely Dan in particular, it makes more sense to analyse them from a jazz perspective than a rock one.
Brilliant breakdown Rick thank you so much.
Hard to believe Jeff Porcaro never felt like he could play shuffles well. Dude is killing it here!
So glad to hear you mention Stanley Jordan! Please interview him.
Rick you got to get Louie Shelton , he's getting old and he is a fantastic guy , amazing guitarist !
Hello little brother, have you ever considered an introspective look at the genius of Lowel George with Little Feat? The drums alone are an entire episode, let alone . But add Bill Payne and the boys..a rete mixture of the best road music. Just a thought. Much love paizan
The artists you've gotten have been amazing!
Man that's great stuff -- Love Steely Great great great....
Great video and nice Sg!! From Argentina!! Great job Rick we learn a lot from you!
So glad you interviewed Rick Wakeman. We saw him last week. A master.
Cool, I've been waiting for something on Steely Dan
I have a full band transcription in a Hal Leonard book and they have it written against an Em key signature, and the main vamp riff ending on Em. But you're right, Rick - it's an E blues.
They never wrote a bad song. The Dan are the American Beatles; no one else comes close.
One of the most well rounded bands..The first singer was brilliant.
Never heard a bad tune from them.
Just pleasing with purpose...
I love Black Friday. It’s in the top 5 best Steely Dan songs for sure. And every time I hear it, I bop my head like crazy
Every Steely song is in the top 5 Steely Dan songs!
Man I like Fagen’s True Companion. Very atmospheric, and will always remind me of the animated movie Heavy Metal
Love that guitar, Rick! Very pretty color!
I love this song Never caught the Blues turn around before Rick!!
You should do a "Why is this song so great?" On King of The World. That's my absolute favorite Steely Dan song
Love that tune. One of their underrated gems.
