having watched this video for months it is my conclusion that the best sounding instrument is the voice of the singer. don't get me wrong because all of the musicians are excellent and I am a Tony Rice freak but the vocals absolutely carry this song! great job people and thanks alot!
I was raised on bluegrass music and I thank the good Lord above for that. It doesn't get any better than this. R.I.P to Tony Rice without a doubt the greatest to ever do it.
Ive watched this video probably about a million times, that upstroke sweep at 2:11 is why Tony Rice is one of the if not the greatest to pick a flat top!!
What a treasure to be able to listen and watch this: talented friends and family jamming; good to see such a range of ages. You are fortunate people. Singer in black T-shirt sure has that sweet high mountain sound. I think it's cool that Tony wasn't singled out to do a break; egalitarianism rules! Good visuals and sound, also
Flora Bunda The singer in the black shirt appears to be Keith Pyrtle, Doyle Lawson's Guitar player/Tenor and Lead Vocalist. Keith is also, Lou Reid's nephew!
this was so good it brought a tear to my eye, lovely banjo pickin and everyone else nailed it,wouldn't expect any less when the great Tony Rice is involved.
@guccitothemax That's "The Antique". It's a 1935 Martin D-28 (serial number: 58957) previously owned and played by Clarence White. The over-sized sound hole was added at an unknown time and the tortoise pickguard was added by Tony in the 80s.
@@johngass I just had to reply 9 years later.... Just maybe, after all this time you didn't find out haha! He will be missed completely, absolutely amazing man
You are totally correct that's exactly how it happened. He told me we were going to a barbeque in Ruffin at Jason Moore's dad's house for his dads birthday. I was shocked when he loaded the guitar since he had shunned jams for years.
This tune is called "Ain't It Funny." It was done by Lou Reid on his "When It Rains" Cd. Tony played on that CD as well as Terry Baucom, and Rickie and Ronnie Simpkins.
Dustin Pyrtle on lead vocals. Patton Wages on banjo. Aaron Ramsey on mandolin. Jason Moore on bass. I've seen the others, can't place the names. Small spot for all that talent, but glad they stuffed in.
Although it would be an unreal experience, I don't think I would be able to jam with Tony Rice. It would be too intimidating. I know I would keep thinking, "Man, I bet he thinks I suck". lol. Awesome vid. btw.
I was thinking the same thing... LOL! I recently picked with the same caliber of picker and the whole time I was thinking I suck so bad but you know these guys have been around a long time and have picked with the worse and the best. They just love music and if it isn't super bad they suck it up and play along. It helps your playing to play with this level of picker, for sure!
I had the chance to pick with him about 12 years ago with Bobby Hicks and Balsam Range. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy and in my mind there'll never be another like him. One of the best if not the best voice in bluegrass of all time and awesome flatpicker doesn't even begin to come close. Nobody will ever pull the tone that Tony did out of that Martin.
Would have been great but the banjo needs a volume knob and learn how not to play through a whole song and lay back when someone else is playing the instrumental. It was hard to tell where his break started and stopped
So true... but I'd have to say he was probably so dang mesmerized playing with Tony in the room he was locked on one thing - play your butt off. Over all super song and good breaks by all.
Its actually a 1935 Martin D-28 Herringbone, serial #58957, previously owned by Clarence White. www.fretboardjournal.com/features/58957-tony-rice-and-his-holy-grail-martin-d-28/
When Tony looks your way you take a break. And the fiddle girl knows this and did a great job!

Sure do wish they would come and play in the space between my kitchen and dining room !.......Loving it
it's like Tony just decided to show up at a random house party! If only I were that lucky. lol

saludos a Tony Rice desde un fans de su estilo desde El Salvador

also done by The Country Gentlemen before that, that's Lou's nephew singing lead
The guy singing did a stint with DL&QS recently .
Excellent blend of music
Patton wouldn't give Tony a break

It looks like the singer and the banjo player could be brothers.
Man! That's just plain good! I'd give up a kidney to be able to sit in on a jam with Tony Rice. Does Tony know anyone who needs a kidney?
Imagine having TR in your house and jamming with him. Legendary
great, would like to hear more.
Why no break for Tony ?? Maybe he was not up for trying to play over the Banjo Player
A guitar break is not a priority.
Good times!!!!
Awesome stuff....wow! Would have loved to be there. Any more vids of you guys on youtube?
Great pickin! banjos a little loud but as a fellow banjo player myself i say turn it up!
thats a beautiful d-35 tony's playin
D-28 with a bound fingerboard....Gretch fingerboard added later.
The banjo player is good, but he seems to have only one volume...
Jake Boedecker You sure he ain’t got seven? Or four? Or, we’ll figure it out one of these days.
RIGHT?! God forbid you back off a tad....
SON!!!!
Would that be Patton Wages on banjo?
Yep, the one and only bearded wonder!
I seen him pick when he was a kid.
great
THE RIGHT HAND.
Can someone write the lyrics down to this song? I can't quite make out the second verse. It's freakin good though!
Is that song in G-tune ?
does anyone know what kind of banjo that is? thanks
I do believe it's a stealth banjo
Who is the banjo player? he looks like some one i know
Watch that right hand of Rice's on the downbeat. son.
Is That Tony's house?
Jason Moore's parents house.
The banjo is way too freaking loud!
False
Sadly, Tony looks like he is near death!

He's a great player. Plays professional with volume five
I know tha location $1.00 a answer
Lol watch Tony Rice's other videos and then tell me he plays only Santa Cruz guitars he played a Martin HD-28 for years
That is a tony rice signature model guitar from santa cruz guitars california. not a d-35 martin!!!!!!!
I think that's the "antique" D-28.
it is the bone
that is a santa cruz guitar not a martin. tony has always played santa cruz guitars do your research
