    This is one of those reviews you really need for a borderline thing like this...totally excellent.

    I have the HDMI only for Z Cam and C70 and totally agree. I almost just sent it back but then I figured I can use it for framing the shot and waveforms as the C70 screen is useless in bright sunlight so I kept it. I'm waiting on my Komodo to come in so I've been shopping for a reasonably priced SDI EVF and sadly this is it. It's amazing that someone can't make a decent EVF in the 800 dollar price range. The 1500 dollar units are mostly sold out so they couldn't make the 800 dollar units fast enough for the market.

      The current climate is hard to bring anything to market. I think manufacturers are building what they can afford to build and what they can actually bring to market. A friend told me a term yesterday and I think it is spot on. I don’t want to call him out for saying it but I also don’t want to take credit for saying it. The term “Lowest viable product” fits perfectly. Portkeys makes some good stuff at affordable prices. This EVF works and does what it needs to, to work. Its not super at anything, but its effective at everything. And the price matches. So, its really cool that this product exists because there is certainly a market for it. It just isn’t an EVF for everyone.

    I'm generally not an EVF guy, but if I were, I'd probably be spending a lot more money and getting a really good EVF. Considering I would be looking through it for several hours per day and having to rely on it to judge framing, focus, exposure and everything, I would want something more than just "It's okay", I would want quality optics and a good screen inside so I can trust in the gear to reflect my best work. So I don't think this EVF is more than "the indie filmmaker's last resort".

      You’re not wrong. I would say “there isn’t a better, cheaper EVF than this with SDI”. And, that is true. But yea, like I said, this is likely for people who rarely use an EVF and don’t want to spend a bunch of money on something they rarely use and/or for people who just don’t have the budget for a more expensive one.

    Great review. Just subscribed. I think I’ll get it for my Komodo and upgrade to a Zacuto Kameleon Pro if I like using an EVF.

    Hi Scott, nice video. I am the only one who seems to do this, but I have been rocking a Small HD 502 with Sidefinder attachement for the past 5 years. It's amazing. Great quality and quiet. The only two issues? It's big and they don't make the Sidefinder anymore. If you can find one, I highly recommend checking it out.

      Yea, I owned one of the very first ones. They were cool, but way too big.

    Yeah thanks for the review. What would you do with an EVF with bad optics.

    "not a compromised EVF" unlike its non SDI sibling where they removed the flip function ...

    Scott how would you compare this to the older Zacuto Gratical HD?

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  2 роки тому +2

      The Zacuto has better optics to see the screen. But, the screen is better than the Gratical HD.

    • @MattRozier1

      @@ScottBalkum thanks Scott, just weighing up the two options - which would you go for?

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  2 роки тому +1

      @@MattRozier1 Well it depends on how much you use an EVF. The Gratical is huge, Portkeys is not. Gratical is loud, Port is not. Gratical is expensive, port not. I do really like the Kamleon from Zacuto, it is fantastic and about 4-5X the cost. IF you don’t use it much, the Portkeys is fine. IF you use it a bunch, you might want better optics.

    I stopped at 500+ $.
    I add 250-300$ and buy a Canon C300 Mark I. There you have it- for the intrinsic price/value ratio- it is crazy overpriced.

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  Рік тому

      Well, the EVF is not a camera. It is an electric viewfinder.

    • @frenchcoupon3391
      @frenchcoupon3391 Рік тому

      @@ScottBalkum Of course. But money is money and more than 500$ for a camera enhancement is too much for some of the creators (budget of several short films).

    The eye piece is crap, and the diopter lens is crap. If you move your eye 2mm either way, you lose focus, you lose framing, you lose the shot.
