  • Slam poet and longtime educator Taylor Mali looks back on his journey from the birth of the poem "What Teachers Make," through its resulting impact on a surprising number of newfound teaching converts-all the way through his official registration of 1000 new teachers. Along the way, according to Mali, many lives were changed, not the least of which was his own.

This guy is someone I admire. You talk about someone confident with who he is and what he is and determined to succeed in it... Taylor is it. He's one of those guys I wish I could meet with, have a conversation with and ask how? How did he find so much passion and love, not just for his students or profession, but for his life.

You Inspired me! I teach Music now to over 55 year olds and spent some time a a supply teacher and a little SEN teaching as well. I started out as a musician in bands and a wannabe engineer, became a teacher after many years.
I have two music classes teaching over 60's music and Ukulele these days.

He makes teaching sound more romantic than it really is. I wonder how many people who changed their profession lasted longer than 3 years. The profession is top heavy and administrators and politicians can make a teacher's life hell. Kids and their parents are great but those in charge are the problem. Every kid in the same grade level must be on the same page on the same day and take the same test three times a year. Even worse, the test results is the basis their teachers' salaries would be based on but have no consequences for the students. American education is in trouble. I lasted 20 years but the overload of useless meetings that kept me from my real job was killing me. My heart was breaking and I had to get out.
He presents it so romantically but the romance dies quickly. Love remains but most marriages to teaching only lasts three to seven years. Very few make it for more than 20. Divorce just eventually happens in a dysfunctional program.

Shoulda invested that energy into IMPROVING the pay and conditions of teachers; then, more people would apply for the job....
