- For many years, the New River Train was pulled by Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire No. 765. In 1993, it was given some temporary cosmetic changes to turn it into Chesapeake & Ohio 2765, befitting the route of the New River Train over the old C&O mainline.

What an absolutely beautiful machine, running unassisted, the way she was meant to run!
Thats an amazing number of coaches---and just the single engine!
Amazing how bad the station at Thurmond looked. Been down there twice, and they've really fixed it up nicely.
This was also the longest continuous New River Train to date with 1 auxiliary water tender, 1 tool car, and 32 coaches. The longest ever was the first trip or trips in 1992 with 1 auxiliary water tender, 1 tool car, and 33 coaches on those.
On a side note, I wish 765's Nathan 6 chime still sounded the way it does here in this video.
Fun Fact: This year, 765 was allowed on a portion of CSX tracks in Cleveland (via a trackage rights agreement with a local shortline) to access the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Baby steps is all it takes, my friend.
Christopher Kovacs good words.
CSX has no interest in anything running on its railroad that does not make money for them! Period.
@@b3j8 We have an operational Big Boy nowadays, so never say never my friend.
I'm glad her original sounding nathan 6 chime from ww2 was added back
When I was younger I actually thought the 765 and the 2765 were two different locomotives until I realized they simply repainted the 765 lol
Now you’re a wise guy 😂😂😂
Same
The real C&O 2765 was scrapped in 1961.
@@vincentstazione9267 in trainz on the otherhand, there are 3 versions: auran's, k&l trainz' (steve lerro did an amazing job) 2 versions (765 as 2765 and his c&o kanawha)
So did I
I wish they would do this again with 765
A 33 car passenger train, wow. 😍
I was born 12/01/92 so steam was basically already gone by the time I was born. But it feel honoree that some places were still using steam locomotives. I can say I was around when they were using steam to power some of these locomotives, I was alive when Andre The Giant was alive,
That last scene could be a great photo (or video) of the train going the other way.
What a beautiful new river train
Nickel Plate 2-8-4 S-2 Berkshire 765 was renumbered to her cousin locomotive Chesapeake & Ohio Kanawaha 2765.
wonder what ever happened to C&O 2716
C&O 2716 was been taken out of service.
railfan man 2716 is @ the Kentucky Railway Museum.
thanks for the information
+jrahrig It is undergoing restoration to operation by 2020
One CSX brass hat has watched this.

THE "TWENTY-SEVEN SIXTY-FIVE"
At 00:08:51 which tunnel is this?
Stretcher's Neck Tunnel, outside Prince, West Virginia.
Ah the glory days, too bad they just wont let her do it anymore, she still holds the record for the amount of cars unaided, I dont know what csx's issue is, she is no more dangerous then the toxic stuff they are hauling full of liquid petrolum, and fertalizer. or is it just that they traffic on the rails is too much they could not fit her in I will never know, would take more then me asking the local csx sub division point guys uptown anyway, but they in not anyway tax the engine with a challange much anymore, last one I would say that gave her a run for the money was though horseshoe curve and though she had diesles, I was told one run though it she did it unaided with the other engine on idle, so its not impossible for her to do though she mainly ran bellview to fort wayne in the old days it is my understanding.
C&O wouldn't use a Yankee name, Berkshire. Called them Kanawhas.
2:22: What was that?? 😂
C&O 2700's whistle on 765 squeaking out a hello.
What is causing all the clanking in her side-rods? I don't remember hearing it so loudly in other clips of her.
It's most likely because they're loose, or they haven't been greased properly.
Ok. Thnx. Could that cause damage to the side or connecting rods?
Yes. It's one of the issues that was fixed when she was given her overhaul after this trip on the New River Train.
Zephyr4501 They were not "loose" or not lubricated properly its because the bearings were worn out into an oval shape from the up and down motion of the side rods. These little gaps cause the rods to move ever so slightly causing the clanking. However this was only when the rods were moving up and down.
***** Oh. I never knew that the bearings could be worn out like that.
😍😍😍
This Whistle & Bell LIKE N&W 475
No they modify 765's Nathan 6 chime whistle
This is 2765, not 765. Two different engines.
No. This is 765 but renumbered and cosmetically altered to "C&O 2765"
not
they are the same engine.
