    Watching an engineer get a big ole beast like that with a large passenger train behind them up to speed that fast is like watching an artist. He brought that ole girl up to speed in no time with very little drama

    This was right before railroads started counting their beans and worrying about liability. In fact, steam was verboten on CSX and NS from 1995 on, but NS had the short lived 21st Century Steam program from Sept. 2011 to fall 2015 with additional 611 excursions in 2016 and 2017. A lot of those excursions ran on freight only tracks that the general public can’t normally ride but some ran on tracks that Amtrak also runs on and 765 ran on the Reading and Northern in eastern PA and Delaware Lackawanna which normally has excursions.

      eh one of the whistles got broke that they had, so they cut the side away to show what the inners look like, I think she sounds fine right now myself, but that is just me, anyway they had the openhouse last weekend for 2014, did not get to make it this year though as I had to work, as for the guy talking about rich, well he might be one of the official engineers but they say he is heavy handed on the throttle more then need be. but this is neat to see on one of her record breaking trips that she did, pulling 30 cars up the new river gorge and at speed too, too bad csx is so anal about steam on their lines and wont let any on anymore.

    • @ZJKFilms
      @ZJKFilms 9 років тому +3

      @jeepfivethree, if you listen to some of the newer in cab videos, when the engineers gets the cord out past a certain point, the whistle still does squeak like it does here, it just takes a little more effort, although I do agree that the old whistle here sounds better then the new one they have on it now.

    • @manga12
      @manga12 9 років тому +2

      ***** they just pull it down they dont have a cord on it currently they just reach up and pull it down.

      +jeepfivethree I couldn't agree more. I like how that whistle sounded before they changed it. But you are right. They probably aren't going to change it back.

      +Zacharia Kaye The current whistle is the same as the engine has in the video. The fireman has a different whistle, likely native to the C&O, but 765 retains her sister #700's Nathan 6 chime whistle. You can tune a whistle to make it sound different.

      She would have been doing 60-70+ back the. on the old C&O mainline. Best days of steam are right there when Chessie still allowed for steam on their rails.

      According to Rich Melvin, in the last few years of these trips in the early 90s, having proved their competency, CSX had allowed them 60 and I believe 65 at some spots.
