  • In January, 1993 my brother Kevin was out capturing video of CSX pulling up the welded rail of the C&O of Indiana. I was waiting for my new camcorder to get delivered so I didn't get this footage when the tracks were pulled up. Sorry about the quality but my brother dubbed this footage from his VHS to my VHS. He starts out on the west edge of Amboy, Indiana where they will leave track from Amboy to Goodman yards at west Marion where the CERA will later run on that track. The he captures action behind where we grew up between Butler Ave and the bypass highway 9 and 37 bridges. This part one video ends at Jonesboro, Indiana. Part 2 will be action of several rail trains making their last trips on the C&O of Indiana. Thanks for watching. Plese like, share, comment and subscribe.

Thanks for sharing this. I never thought I would ever see footage of this. A sad day indeed.

Thank you for sharing this history with us. It’s very sad indeed, but I’m glad it was captured on video tape. I just saw the removal of my childhood railroad (The Monon) a while back and it’s very sad knowing there won’t be any trains any more north of New Albany. Excellent video work as always. 👍🏻

You are welcome. Yes such a sad time. Out of four lines that went through Marion, the NS marion Branch is the only one that still runs although Marion has been cut down to locals and occasional grain trains. Pretty sad around here now. Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you. Yes that's interesting to see. I heard the rail was later used in Geogia

Not sure I knew this segment was still in place that recently, I figured it was gone by the early '80s. Also, checking Street View, it looks like the final scene is on E. 10th St, now the south trailhead for the Cardinal Greenway. Was curious if the bridge was still there, but it's not.

The segment west of Santa Fe to Chicago was torn up before this south of Marion segment but I can't remember how soon. I think it was in the later 80's. The bridge in Jonesboro was hit by a truck due to the low clearance so they chose to tears it down. The walkway ends there but continues along a county road to Gaston where it rejoins the C&O right of way.

We lost our railroad in 1994, the Salina to Plainville Kansas, victim of the 1993 floods

CSX in their abandon everything years did the same thing to the B&O mainline that ran through my home town.😪😪

Very sad. But apparently CSX thought this was redundant after the merger.

I wonder if they regretted it later?

@@NELSONRRVIDS Look at a map of CSX and route a train from Cincinnati to Chicago. Not exactly a straight line, is it?

@@maestromecanico597 Yes it was curvy with grades. Around 1971 the C&O derailed at Deer Creek on a trestle and a couple units went down into the creek. They pulled six axle units off that line because of the curves. In 1974 that changed when Amtrak started running on the line with the six axle E8 and E9 units. Then later the SDP45'S.

@@NELSONRRVIDS Sounds like the middle of the B&O St Louis line that CSX also ripped out during their purge. No, they were not ideal but once they were gone they’re not coming back and long-way-around alternatives quickly lost capacity. CSX compensated by getting the former CR St Louis line. No such luck between Cincy and Chicago. Again, look at a modern CSX map and those two major centers lack a direct route.

When did they stop running through trains on here?

    • @NELSONRRVIDS

They stopped in 1992 just a few months before they pulled up the rest of the rail. It was only open from Cincinnati to Amboy which is west of Marion at the final closing. Peru to Chicago section was closed and pulled up a few years before that but I can't remember the exact date. Seems like around 1989.
