Hi there, coming from someone in the carnivorous plant hobby, your plant is Nepenthes x Ventrata, which is a hybrid of N.graciliflora and ventricosa. You were right about it being easy, it's a mass-market hybrid that's designed to be bombproof and tolerant a wide range of conditions. For general nepenthes care, there are a few concepts to understand:
1) Nepenthes are generally divided into 2 categories, highlanders( which come from the tops of mountains and prefer cool days and cold nights), and lowlanders(which prefer hot-warm days and warm nights, they are found closer down to sea level). There are also Intermediate species, which can tolerate more temperature fluctuations, and ultrahighlanders, which come from even higher up on the mountains than highlanders. When you seriously start growing nepenthes, temperature is one of the most important factors to consider
2) As with all carnivorous plants, mineral free water is a must. While nepenthes are fairly tolerant of high minerals, in the long-term all carnivorous plants need both mineral free water and potting media.
3)Regarding humidity, most species (there are exceptions, of course), do fine in ambient room humidity. Most beginners think that if their plant is not making pitchers, it is because the humidity is too low. This is not the case. A pitcher-less plant is usually a plant that is not being well-light. The pitchers on nepenthes are require a lot of energy to produce, and that energy comes from photosynthesis.
4) For winter- while there are other carnivorous plants that have a winter dormancy, nepenthes are not one of them. Treat them like tropical plants. Your plant, which is a N. x ventrata, is basically unkillable so any temperatures above 40f should be fine.
thank you so much for sharing this!
Thank you so much!! This is amazing 👏
Wow thank you for all your knowledge now i want a few but i live in a low humidity area and i think i need the highlanders what are those kind called?
Is not nepenthes graciliflora x ventricosa, that’s the nepenthes rebecca sopper, that’s a nepenthes ventrata (N. Ventricosa x N. Alata)
@@pedroa3717 x Rebecca soper is (gracilima x ventricosa), x Ventrata is (ventricosa x graciliflora), two different species. Some people argue that ventrata is ventricosa x alata, but I disagree, the reason being that at the time ventrata was created, the alata complex was not clearly defined, and the "alata" that was used to create ventrata was later renamed graciliflora
Thank you for this video. I'm 7 and my mom just got me a pitcher plant and I'm trying to learn how to take good care of it. Thank you.
You are 7? Damn you have better spelling than I did when I was 7
@crystalsandketo4948 same here but nine
The pfp??? 💀☠️
@@asmrtpop2676probably his mom’s account?
@@madeason We also didn’t have smart phones. You really don’t need to learn to spell anymore. 😂
Lol “don’t attack me, help meeee”. Cuz that’s the nice thing to do y’all 😉
Yessss! lol :)
I used distilled on my Venus flytrap bc I read that they cannot process a lot of the minerals in our water and it’s a common reason as to why people lose their plants. Dunno as much with pitcher plants though. I also just keep mine in a tray of distilled water and fill it every few days as needed.
It's what killed my first one in high school. Distilled has been good ever since.
You aren't supposed to use the tray method on a nepenthes because of root rot. It's only good on some carnivorous plants.
Excuse me ma’am nepenthes are not supposed to sit in water
@@monke1919 no it kind of kills them if they sit in water
If you take showers rather than baths, take the pitcher plant in the room with you, since the steam is evaporated it’s essentially distilled water and since these are tropical plants they love the hot and humid setting it will most definitely benefit from it, keep up the good work !
Thanks!!
Wow thanks I didn’t really even think about I thought I was going to have to buy a supply of ROS water or rain 💦.
The timing of this video was perfect!! I Just got one that is super full and beautiful but doesn’t have pitchers so I’m giving it super bright light now! Thanks💕
some things i’ve learnt while keeping different carnivorous plants, especially pitchers as they’re my fave; these guys really thrive on rainwater because there’s too many chemicals in regular tap water, they prefer to be kept in plastic pots rather than ceramic/terracotta and ive found that my pitcher that looks very similar to this one thrived the best when i hung it from my shower rail so it got lots of light and humidity! and other styles of pitchers that weren’t in hanging pots i found they liked to be bottom watered and didn’t minded sitting in water at all 🌱
Be careful with fertilizer as it will stop producing pitchers if it dosent need them to fertilize itself 😊
Ahhh! *aborts mission*
I think California Carnivores suggest putting one pellet of Osmacote? fertilizer in each pitcher once a month during the growing season. So maybe it keeps making pitchers because it thinks they are trapping flies?
I know! I was hunting for ants, wack them then take my tweezers to feed my fly trap.. Feed them a bee one time .. Took a long time for it to be "digested" 🙄
Perfect timing! I just bought mine from Logees! Thanks so much for the tips. Its a beautiful plant.
I always loved seeing this plant in your other videos! Glad to see a video on it :)
Yes, this nepenthes is a plant named Bloody Mary would you believe? It was hybridised in 1998 in Borneo where it was crossed with various species so it would tolerate different high and low temperatures for sale in a commercial market. This is a winner of a plant and really does well in ambient conditions without additional humidity unlike some others. They just dont like minerals in the water....so its a good one to start with.
Great video! I must say that when I first bought my Napenthes, I obsessed over it and probably over did it with the care. These hybrid plants that we get at a typical nursery are so extremely adaptive. I live in a semi arid environment with no access to osmosis or rain water, besides the few times a year that it rains... As far as watering, I do not have the money to invest into a clean water filtration system. I give my plant tap water, and I guarantee you... There are minerals. I think that my plant is successful because when I water it, I really make sure that a lot of water flows through the pot and leeches out any minerals that may accumulate in the soil. I literally take my hose and let it go for about 30 seconds. Our average humidity is quite low here, but I offer a little secret... I hang mine right above a vegetable garden and this baby thrives. The moisture wicking out of my garden soil seems to do the trick with the humidity and abundance of small winged creatures to eat. I find that the more light I give Georgia (the name of my beautiful Napenthes), the better she does and the more likely she is to pitcher. I am at high altitude, about 6000 feet and that sun is strong. Georgia loves to get cooked in hot summer sun. I didn't have pitchers for quite some time after I lost the bunch from the nursery, and this year was the year I made sure these few things happened. She pushed out more pitchers than my local nursery could have ever hoped for. More than when I obsessed over her in the beginning. I think that our plants just need a good minute (6+ months) to adapt to their new environment. Anyways, that's my plant rant for the day. Cheers and good luck with winter. Mine begins to.look a little rough in the winter, but come the growing season, all is well.
AHh I love that! Hope Georgia continues to thrive :) Thanks for watching!
I have 7 of them and I love them so much! My favorites!
This is such a beautiful plant 😍definitely putting it on my wish list!
this is such an interesting video! thanks for all the information! 💚
Thank you so much for this upload! I’m very interested in growing these!
I just use a Britta filter and it seems to work well for my pitchers and fly traps.
Perfect timing! Mine just arrived in the mail! Thank you for the tips 💚🌱

absolutely love getting your vid notifications lol always helping me with my plants!! 😌😌😌
Thank youuuuu!!!
I have one of these too, and they are very easy to care for! I have mine outside where it only receives rain water (I’m in Florida where it’s always hot and humid) and it’s thriving!
I live in Florida and just bought one for my barn area! Hopefully it likes flies because where there are horses there are flies!!
@@mjlupetta mine LOVE flies!! And the flies are attracted to it!
Your Nepenthes is a Sanguinea which means blood red for the color of the pitchers. It's from Malaysia and is an intermediate to Highlander. I am not certain but I think that has something to do with the location of where that particular species grows. And what an awesome quink-ee-dink that you did this video because I just ordered one and got the notification this morning that it's on it's way!!
Cool video and very cool plant!!!!
Brad`s greenhouse is a great channel for carnivorous plants.
I think he lives near you.
Amazing! I will check it out
I am absolutely not experienced with nepenthes, I have only a couple that were more or less rescues but can STILL share a sweet tip I came across and can vouch for. When they're developing pitchers, mist only the tip where its developing with distilled water a couple times a day if possible or at least once. Mine went from living but all pitchers browning off before developing to having many coming in at once! 💚
We just picked up ours. Thanks for all the tips!
Awesome! You’re welcome :)
That looks exactly like the "Bloody Mary" Nepenthes I just ordered, so I'm guessing that's what it is.
Once the temps drop below "room temperature" make sure to bring them inside, if they aren't already. Unlike some other carnivorous plants, like flytraps, they don't need any dormancy period.
In other words, do whatever you gotta do to keep their environment stable, and they'll be fine. Give em the same amount of food and light, year-round.
Brads greenhouse, redleaf exotics, predatory plants and California carnivores are great channels to learn from. I just started collecting them this year and currently have 5 plants. I would also give it a stake the start climbing up
First thing I saw when I opened up youtube and it couldn't be better timing! I just picked one up today at a local store, yay!
Ahh amazing!
Edit: Most of the tips below are about venus fly trap and sarracenia and from my experience.
I'm no expert but I have carnivorous plants myself 🌿
- They love water but if you forget about watering and they dry out it's ok and don't panic just give them more water than usual and they'll live through it
- I personally use distilled water and I think it's the best for these plants, rain water works well too but be careful with regular tap water sometimes it has too much minerals in it and the plant may die
- moss is a good choice for Nephenthes but if you have sarracenia or venus fly trap use peat because in the wild they live on peatlands
- Direct sunlight can be harmful because their leaves are quite delicate. I personally keep them in sun but if it's really strong I move them to shadow
- There is a reply to this comment about watering Nephenthes check it out 😉
- If you have sarracenia or venus fly trap you should let them suck up water from bottom of the pot
- misting is good if the air is dry
- DON'T USE FERTILIZERS if your plant is not doing well you can try catching some ants for it or collect some dead bugs. I have mosquito nets on all of my windows and that means no bugs in my home but I feed my plants myself. I just go hunting for ants. Pitcher plants don't require living pray but if you have Venus fly trap try catching some living ants or other bugs. I recommend using tweezers
Well I think that's all from me you can ask questions and I'll try to answer them. I hope this was helpful 😅
This was super helpful!! Thank you SO much! I didn't know they could be fed dead bugs. Interesting.
Hi Adam, Nepenthes don't like to sit in water or suck up water from the bottom of the pot, this will rot the roots of any Nepenthes and eventually kill the plant, Nepenthes naturally live in very open airy soil/leaf litter (many in cloud forests), with lots of rain but no water logging!. They (nepenthes) don't live in bogs /peat bogs like Sarracenia which can't live without the tray/bottom watering method..........Nepenthes can and like being fertilized, both foliarly and by the roots, a weak fertilizer solution can be added either way and then if it's added by the roots it can be flushed out with pure water (like in nature)..........Sarracenia in contrast hate fertlizer by their roots, because they live in bogs and can't flush out the nutrients, whiich they evolved to get another way
@@volvos70t51 oh wow I didn't know that 😅 thank you for correcting me
This is very useful information that I need. Thank you!

I just bought a tiny baby pitcher plant, I saw it in the store and fell in love, hopefully I’m able to be a good plant mum to it
I just ordered a nepenthes. I'm nervous about taking care of it so I'm looking at as many videos as I can. BTW I like your look your hair looks so cool!
Great video! Really enjoyed. Perhaps you can more information in a library, or in a botanical garden?
I have the same plant! I think it's a Nepenthes Ventrata? Doesn't really catch as many flies as a sundew but still really fun to grow.
Those are SO cute!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your pitcher plant is soo pretty! I got one for a Christmas present. They're so cool! But mines getting frostbite. I'm going to follow along with this and try to save them.
Awe good luck!
I love this video! Your channel is so amazing it really inspires me 💖

It's so beautiful. Looks like a slipper dangling off a leaf
Such a gnarly plant! Looks like used water balloons I dig it.
The crimson is stunningggg

What a beautiful plant I ve been wanting to get one for my son.
Thanks! I love it ☺️
What a beautiful plant! It's been on my wishlist for so long. Keeping my fingers crossed that my local nursery will carry it soon 😊
Ahh I hope they get some in!
My experience is venus flytrap and sundew is to use distilled water(I never use rain water before),but when It's nepenthes, I use tap water and it didn't die.(I hope this information can help you!)
I recently got two pitcher plants and one venus fly trap at Walmart. They were $1 each.
Omg such a deal!

WOW....Nepenthes x Ventrata is so beautiful
Hi there, that is a Nepenthes Ventrata for sure. And you are right, it is an easy plant to care for. Keep on growing!
Thank you for watching :)
Ok ok I have been growing carnivorous plants for like 3 years now so come on it is soooo easy to care for them and so easy to find information on this plant
Man those pitchers are beautiful
I just got into carnivorous plants and I’ve been watching Sarracenia Northwest you tube videos. Plus they are in the PNW! 💙
Awesome thank you!
Omg you're beautiful and you're into carnivorous plants 😍
The pitcher plant is awesome.
My friend just bought me a pitcher for my BDay and Im So excited but nervous I don't want him to dieee its like a animal
I was recommended to read The Savage Garden for my carnivorous plants (I have nepenthes, a sarracenia, and now some pinguicula too!).
I just got one yesterday! Not in the best condition but
Do you find that your carnivorous plants actually make an impact on the # of flies in your home or nah it just looks epic?
You're better off just getting fly traps or something like that if you actually want a sizeable decrease in the amount of flies. I thought the same thing when I first learned about them.
I haven't noticed a difference haha. It isn't in a high traffic area where we commonly get bugs though so who knows.
@@user-dt4hp4ml6u thank you. At first I was weighing my options between sticky fly traps or venus fly traps. I'll go with the sticky fly traps. I usually do ACV traps but those aren't as effective anymore.
@@wildfern 👍👍I'll have to do that as an experiment in the future to see how effective they are indoors. I just want 4 in each corner of my room. It's like I'm lord of the flies or something. They won't go away. It's still a beautiful plant with a cute jungle vibe.
@@fignewton0000 I would use sundews for smaller areas and nepenthes for big areas. Sundews catch lots of buggies.
Carnivorous plants are so interesting! 🤔
Whoaaaaa thank you for this video I just got mine today and hoping not to kill it.
I'm sure it will thrive in your care!! 😊
You should try Pinguicula's as well. Easy plants with beautiful flowers that'll help your other plants as well because they get rid of those gnats and other small bugs.
I just bought mine today 😍
what the heck I just realized I've been watching you forever but I wasn't subscribed this whole timeeeeeee I cry
Hi, I’m from Dhaka Bangladesh. Tnx for you stunning review.
If you have access to fish tank water, after the fish tanks have been cleaned, keep the fifty water and give that to your plants. They will thrive. I do not know how the picture plant will react to that water, though.
I can confirm that the plants i water in my bedroom from my fish tank water are absolutely loving life!!
I follow you on insta and this is the first video I watched of you and somehow I thought you were going to have a british accent 😂
Hahaha! No, I'm Canadian! :)
You did a great job 👍.
Thank you so much 😀
@@wildfern I started watching your videos first. Luv them. Then everything plants ca, showed up on my feed. You all are great.
Hi, I live in the UK, what should I do in the winter? Bring it inside and put it near a window? Should I spray it with room temperature water?
Mine has been doing fine near a window :) and yes you can definitely mist with room temp water!
I have two bloody mary plants. A small one and a big one, but they dont eat flies:( and a have a question should you have water in the pot so the plants stay in water all the time? I saw some yt videos where people do this.
I use golf fish food mine love it.
Cual es el tiempo de vida de una planta nepenthes?..
What is the time of live of plant nepenthes?
Nepenthes ventrata N.ventricosa x alata very easy to grow I have one myself keep up the great videos
It smells really good it’s what attracts the bugs
Yas I love these, I have a little baby one, so far so good 😅🌿
Omgg me too are you misting it often? Or have a humidifier?
@@kayped123 I plantted it into straight up spagh ina glass jar &keep it wet, and it seems to love it, I enjoy misting all of my plants so yeah it gets a nice spray, I only run my humidifiers in the winter, and it seems to be doing great!
I love that they enjoy water because I tend to soak my poor children. I’m just worried about the humidity apparently needed to produce more cups 🤭
Spraying the tips with distilled water has gotten mine producing pitchers successfully!
About the water inside the pitcher, have you filled it up, or does the water exist naturally?
I don't fill it, it just is there lol
I haven’t watered my pither in months and it grows but not pitchers form
Also good to rip flush distilled water pr pr water ro water is good light coating of worm castings is great very low in ferts very low and won't burn the plants
Do you have to feed it flies or anything?
Hi again your Nepenthes is either Nepenthes Alana or Nepenthes x Ventrata (N. Alata x N. Ventricosa) though I’m almost certain it might be Nepenthes Ventrata base on the color and the lack of wings on it the wings are the line of fine hairs next to each other running from the bottom to the top of the front part of the pitcher the rim is the peristome and the lid is well the lid while the vine between the regular leaf (foliage) and the pitcher is called the tendrils the lines on the rim (peristome) of the pitcher are called the ribs
hey off topic but what kinda lipstick is that? it’s so cute
I use a zero water pitcher filter for my carnivorous plants.... Brings my tab water PPM to 0... hence the brand name
Do you know what the humidity level is in your home?
My kitchen compost always has fruit flies, which would be so great to feed a pitcher plant, but it only has a north facing window :/ It's a big window, but there's only like 5 minutes of direct light at the very end of the day haha.
I feel you, my north facing window does me dirty hahah. Although some people have commented that this variety actually shouldn't be in direct sun so maybe it would work.
wildfern Perhaps when I’m allowed to buy more plants I’ll give it a shot! The humidity in the PNW is great but I could use a little more light 😆
I think I'm in love 😍
I know this is older but where did you get it from?
Nice video! Is it true that you have to keep a bit of water in the pitchers ?
I have never.
@@wildfern if you don’t how dose the plant digest the bugs?
I took cuttings from my mother-in-law’s pitcher plant (it’s huge and lives outside) a few weeks ago, and it hasn’t done much. But i just noticed the pitchers are drying up 😫 what do I do?
Cut the pitchers off they can't support them while the cutting are trying to root , after it gets established it will grow new ones 😊
What did you do before it grew the pitchers? I have a young one and I'm a little lost lol
Nothing different! Make sure you're not fertilizing or potting it into a mix with a lot of nutrients or else it won't be encouraged to grow pitchers. Otherwise, they should come in the spring/summer :)
Hi! My question is not about pitcher plant, sorry! I just bought Super Thrive at Canadian Tire after seeing you use it in one of your previous video. If I remember correctly, you used it with fertilizer, is that right? Can we combine both or do we have to use one or the other? Thanks!
Yes you can combine it with any fertilizer :) or use alone!
wildfern Thanks! And good luck with everything you’re going through.
Disfruto mucho tus videos 🌏🇨🇴🌱
Can I use reverse osmosis water for it?
How do you feed it? Have you actually seen it catch a gnat or fly before?
No I haven’t haha. And I don’t feed it, it’s self sufficient. I can see bugs in it but I’ve never seen one like fly in.
Your plant looks pretty. But in brazil, we live in a mansion, and our plant is so tall it's reaching the floor.
Anyone know where to buy a easy pitcher plant?
