This is simple, effective and an excellent exercise to get into the habit of doing early while your able. I used to tell my mom the more times she gets in and out of a chair the better for her balance (I never knew why) … she’s now 93 years old and has had 23 falls so far this year.
Perfect for me, standing up from my chair. Is difficult!! Glad to have this exercise, am basically learning how to walk all over again and this is great ! Thank you!!
Loved the video, and just subscribed to the channel! THIS is why I am here: Recently, I started taking a Tai Chi class, and the first thing they started me on was learning to do a "tai chi walk method." I instantly learned that my balance is bad enough that I kept trying to fall over when slowly going through the motions. It was bad enough that I have withdrawn from the class, and am now trying to work specifically on balance. As an explaination, over the last year I have lost over 100 pounds having dropped my carbohydrate intake to 20-30 grams per day. In doing just that, I have rid myself of my hyperglycemia, my type-2 diabetes and ALL of my diabetes medications. Now it is time to work on getting my body to understand the new weight distribution, and building up the muscles and joints needed to maintain balance, so I can once again, rejoin the tai chi program.
Insulin can cause weight gain my overweight diabetic endocrinologist told me this. I tried everything to shed but nerve pain has made exercise harder. These exercises are great.
I’m a PT. Searching for functional exercises for balance training in elderly and sick population. Multiple falls and poor endurance of activities are common in this population. Home health. Thank you!
Like most physio exercises they are demonstrated by a younger fitter person and bear little resemblance to the abilities of the average 70 plus aged person. Better to use an older person that has actual balance challenges
People who work in rehab are aware of the ability and limitations of older people. I’m 70, and I had hip replacement. I found these exercises very good. Quite easy. And she offered options to help those who aren’t as agile.
She is the therapist. Everyone should retain their ability to move, balance, and be strong into old age. Besides disease factors that cause decline. It's our responsibility to stay strong
This exercise is also helping me with my post labyrinthectomy challenges. If I don't keep up the movements due to illness or a sedentary lifestyle, the "bobble head" feeling returns. My post op rehab was mostly head and eye movements. These round out the routines. Thank you for the exercise ideas.
I am in bad shape balance wise I fall down a lot and I have to do some thing it’s getting to the point where I don’t think I can live alone anymore. I have an appointment with the physical therapist but it’s not until the end of June so I will try to do something before that thank you very much
Dear dr Tera thanks for shear information But I need to carry out intensive training courses for us as physiotherapy I can arrange courses in my country if you a agree I appreciate thanks for your passion
I am a step behind I cant get up from a chair without rocking and pulling up on something. If a chair doesn't have arms I can push up off of I cant sit in it. I lack leg strength. I cant get up from the floor either. What do you suggest?
I am an senior with two bad knees and an arthritic back. I use my arms to get up from chair, but, as I am blind, I sometimes find myself in a chair without armrests and need a family member to help me out of chair. Is it really possible for me to be able to do this exercise?
steve kierstead yes, this is the perfect exercise to gaining more confidence with that first step. Start by holding on so that your legs can learn the movement. In many cases that shuffle step is just “your brain” trying to make sense of what to do next. Hope this helps!
Like the drill ....I'm 64 and reasonably fit i play Golf twice a week i seem to have balance issues when i get dressed in the morning i have my left leg pants leg on and as i step with my right leg into my pants i seem to loose my balance please advise 👍
steve kierstead practice, practice, practice. I stress that in the video because that is the only way to make it more natural and automatic in real life
I can’t even believe cancer treatment stole my balance this much! I feel like when my heels get worn down until I realized I wasn’t wearing shoes and it was still happening! I feel like I’m walking on sand sometimes.
My legs are heavy ...can not push on legs to rise up .have to push down. On something else. You are thin and lighter weight. I lost 80 lbs and am between 189- 192 lbs so wont work for everyone
@@rehabhqofficial I think that the timing of the popup figures is jarring. You start to introduce yourself and, while drawing viewers in, startle them with loud noises over your speaking voice. Anyway, thank you for the video.
I'm in PT working on balance. The sit to stand is a good exercise. Combining it with step forward is great. Step left or right is brilliant. Thanks

Agree, and don't talk so much. I want a demostration, don't tell what I AM THINKING ABOUT.
Love this!!! Great explanations. Using for my Balance Class tomorrow. Keep em coming. Thank you!
Testimonies of mormons etc
This is one of the best pieces of advice that I’ve gotten thanks 🙏
Thank you for this helpful information. I'll use this exercise.💙
My fitness classes are asking about better balance .
Thanks for this !
I’ll add this little routine to my many balance exercises and strategies in my seniors Pilates classes 👍🏻
Really nice needed after Hip Replacement surgery Thanks

Dr, great presentation. How many repetitions and different ways to step do you recommend?

Should I step stroke leg first or not?
I have a hard time taking the first step. I shuffle my feet before I take the step

Orlando Neuro Therapy . It’s working. I’m skipping the shuffle step and going right to the first step and carrying on
As a personal trainer I have some clients over 80 and I notice balance and gait issues. Any resources or courses available?
Really awesome information!

J'ai un problème de baland depuis mon avec je vais pratiquer ton vidéo merci
These demonstrations are WAY TO ADVANCED for elderly. 75 plus
I have a hard time doing it naturally. I have to think about every step I take
steve kierstead practice, practice, practice. I stress that in the video because that is the only way to make it more natural and automatic in real life
I have to pause before I take that first step, so I don’t get a head rush and get dizzy. That’s why it’s not so natural when I get up from a chair
Oh yes, that is one scenario where you should definitely pause before taking a step.
TY
Very helpful
Should the balance exercise be done for how many minutes daily?
My main concern is steps. Going down specifically
How would I document this?
I have backpain with numbness legs and foot
Oldies with weak kness need chair with arm rest to get from chair. A walking stick can replace arm rest for getting up from chair.
Half the problem is that if like me you are 1m90 average chairs armchairs and toilets on average are too low to get up gracefully.
Keep going nice job
Thank you! You are always so kind in watching and commenting. Do you have any requests for future videos? Just comments below :)
Walking outside I tend to wander over to the side. Can't keep a straight line
Same here!
I feel like a weeble wobble. I can't ride my bike
How did sneek up on me. Well I'm gona beat this
how many repeatations please
Gosh, you scared me with that pop up!
Nice.
Would have been a good video if it weren't for the sound effects, so frustrating
Hmm, frustrating? I will take that into consideration for future videos.
I get a lot of good exercises from your videos but have to totally agree that these new pop ups are very distracting & frustrating!
I can't hear her speech

That chair to grab onto could fall over
Those cartoon characters and noises are so distracting and unnecessary. Seniors are not children.
Thanks for the feedback! A little silliness a day keeps the doctor away. Hoping you can find something to smile about today. 🤗 🌼
