I guess it's contrived, but I could see the explanation being something like "since he doesn't believe he is genuinely this person, the Spider God no longer recognizes him as worthy."

There’s a blog called life of Reilly. Goes into the behind the scenes. Basically the writers were so ready to end this but sales department was in charge of the company and wouldn’t let them.
Speaking of, I remember reading about Scrier (and his cult) in this one Spider-Man novel entitled "Spider-Man: Requiem." In it, the writer tied them to this ancient book buried out in a desert and the Carrion virus. What also was weird about it is that the book features this side plot about a serial killer getting the Carrion virus and it dedicated a whole chapter to this character capturing a woman, tying her up, and mutilating her in a disturbing amount of detail for a book about Spider-Man. It's bizarre as hell.

Some of my favorite episodes of Back Issues involve you guys talking about some of the worst/most ridiculous storylines in comics. I know it must be painful for Sal to recount some of these storylines, but the reactions from Ben, Tiffany and Ethan are very entertaining.
It's funny, Bendis did his own version of the Clone Saga in Ultimate Spider Man, and it was actually my favorite story arc in the "Peter Parker era". Nine well written, well drawn and well paced issues and then it was done.
My ONLY single issue of Spider-Man (I was an X-Men reader in the 90s) is an issue where Peter Parker/Ben Reilly (I don't honestly remember) was arrested as a part of this saga, and the cover was an embossed "jail bars" cover. Spider-Man #57, I think. So 90s.
