I think they are just extra horsepower (no pun intended) for the pulling of the gun carriages
The gunners who actually fire the guns ride onto parade, dismount to do their job, and remount to ride off.
If you are referring to the gun teams, a driver on each pair rides one and directs the second. All six horses pull the gun and limber ..

My old grandad would be ashamed to see the marching order of this amateur bunch , Yes i appreciate some are women but strict protocol in marching is required, perhaps a week back at Catterrick, with a drill instructor may be required, those of us who have served the colours , will appreciate what i am saying , get it right and smart, and for petes sake get some taller people , too much woke in our military
