Whatever the case is that requires that show to be categorized as humour… this show is more informative than a vast majority of informative news. Which is a shame. John Oliver and his team have again and again covered issues that needed coverage in a stellar manner. I admire their dedication and huge amount of effort into their production of meaningful and necessary content. Bravo. A big fan.

I'm so over this news cycle but thankful for John Oliver.
I remember Parkland vividly. I was in 8th grade and my school was one of the ones that participated in March for our Lives. We all thought that maybe something was finally going to change. We were wrong once again.

What could've changed, ive sat here for about a hour thinking of scenarios and Counterscenarios to this situation. I'm not saying "nothing can be done" I'm asking what you think.
Not your fault -- the fault lies in the US politicians (predominantly conservative) who've been more than happy to pander to the pro-gun voter base ... while pocketing the cash offered by the NRA & the gun lobby in exchange for their solemn word to never allow sensible gun-control legislation to ever pass.
However, like the struggle for civil rights & racial / gender equality under the law, this in no way means that the fight against gun violence is futile -- only that the fight is an exceptionally difficult one.
The real question we Americans need to ask ourselves is this: what do we have to gain if we win this fight, versus what is at stake for us if we simply give up fighting?
Like the resistance fighters of Ukraine, the answer for us should be both simple & obvious
...Just look around yourselves & at each other.

Along side the Andy Griffith thing, The Rifleman. Lucas regularly tried to defuse situations before it came to a shootout, wouldn't let Mark have a gun for the whole first season, when Mark did get his own gun it was a single shot 22 he was only allowed to take out under Lucas's supervision. THIS WAS A SAM PECKINPAH SHOW!
Great point! There’s plenty more gun wisdom in Andy Griffith, too. The fact that Barney’s the only one who does carry a gun around and, in spite of the fact that he pretends he’s a firearms expert, he has multiple negligent discharges. He truly does make things worse just having the gun. And that leads Andy to restricting him to carrying the gun unloaded and he is permitted a single bullet in his shirt pocket.

I watched this for 5 mins and it was only when 2017 and Merkel were mentioned that it became clear it wasn’t current… it’s depressing things haven’t changed much.
Problems with Trump, gun control, and Isreal. Close to 7 years now and it feels like we'/re still going through the exact same problems.
I remember when Trump was meeting Merkle for the first time and the headline read "The Leader of the free world meets Donald Trump."
I actually cried after reading that because we were no longer the learder of the free world with him as president. It really shook me. The world was moving on and we were being left behind.
He wasnt starting new wars or getting into proxy wars with nuclear powers. Truley a dark time in US history

@@mattmayo3539 that's actually only in there because they've been releasing the entire video file from their archives (including the HBO bumper at the beginning). Rest assured that John and his team have secured the rights to the past videos. The only change from the original episodes is the UA-cam channel end card with recommended videos. Hope this helps!

I applaud HBO and LWT for allowing the release of this particular episode. It's sad how much of that still is true today....especially the craziness that is Donald Trump. Him saying that the world is laughing at us...and 95% of it...is because they're laughing at him.

As someone who isn't American and lives in New Zealand, yes, we are laughing at Trump. And facepalming. He isn't good for the US image. (To be fair, Hillary wouldn't have been either.)

Uh what defines an "assault weapon" to you... thats a really fast and loose term that doesn't specifically nail down exactly what you are referring to... if you mean automatic weapons those are mostly banned already... if you just mean semi-automatic weapons... then thats most weapons in civilian circulation, lots of owners, including me, and I have never shot anyone... because my brain works... the problem is some people are insane and they steal, hurt, or victimize sane people until they get a weapon and use it to hurt more people.

I was at the taping of this episode! I got to sit in the front row, right next to the camera. Also I got the answer wrong when the warmup comedian asked which season of the show was starting. How should I have known, I had only watched the clips on UA-cam🤣 Still a great experience live, highly recommended!

The serious question is this:
*_WHY is USA allowing trump to run for his dictatorship!!?_*
This question is not about all the legal (and practical, and ethical) reasons there should be for a convicted felon, a seditionist, a person found liable of sexual assault, and an ex-president who messed around with highly classified documents showing/selling them to who knows who, to not be allowed on any ballot.
(There are arguably more than enough reasons for trump to already be imprisoned and, at the very least, be prohibited from running for president.)
All this, and more (e.g., his questionable cognitive state), is clearly a big and serious question in itself.
The question I'm asking here, however, is about how a country can allow someone the opportunity to turn the country into a dictatorship.
It has been obvious enough for quite some time now that this is trump's intent. He has been broadcasting about it himself for the whole world to see/hear.
Coupled with the existence of the truly nefarious Project 2025 and all the people behind it, and coupled with the Supreme Court's (more appropriately called the Supreme Corruption) extremely dangerous immunity ruling, this has become even more glaringly obvious.
And it is far too real a threat.
Still, trump has not been removed from the ballot.
Thus USA, literally, is seemingly fine with giving the destruction of USA (and it won't stop there, sadly), which includes stripping people's rights from them and flushing democracy down the toilet, a fair chance in this election.
In other words, where there should be guardrails in place to protect the country and the people from domestic terrorist attacks, the country is instead opening a door to, and potentially welcoming, what would be the largest and most horrific domestic terrorist attack in its history.
Saying that this is crazy (and immensely irresponsible!) is putting it mildly.
It should also be noted that the threat would be virtually the same without trump, as long as people like those behind the Project 2025 are allowed a chance to get in power.
Had Haley been the so-called republican candidate, she might not have been voicing dreams of retribution and vengeance, nor been talking about being a dictator and praising the despots and dictators of this world, nor promising that you won't have to vote again if you just give her your votes now...
but she would have brought the Project 2025 with her into the White House.
I've posted the above a few times already, and two persons from the UK commented that this could never happen in their country. My reply was/is:
While it also might seem doubtful that this is something that could happen in my home country, Norway, no one should take for granted that they are immune to it.
If the immensely unwholesome trump phenomenon has created a few silver linings in the rest of the world, it's that it is serving as a warning.
Norway, pointing to Poland, Hungary, and USA as examples of how wrong things can go, has concluded that it is necessary to implement changes to our constitution. To better safeguard our courts from political interference, populists, and coups.
Highlighting that it is imperative to do so now when the political landscape is relatively peaceful and the courts independence is not in question.
In other words: to prepare for eventual future events of the more chaotic kind while the means and the consent to do so are present.
Of course it would be wonderful to see similar positive and necessary steps being taken elsewhere as well.

Basically, any system can be co-opted and what you’re seeing now is the result of around 200 years of class warfare as industrialists fought with labor unions for control of federal money, meanwhile both political parties are so far to the right that any government programs to prevent mass deaths are called socialist. There’s no ideal system only ideal citizens, it’s a question of education (notice the current Conservative push to dominate school boards). Unfortunately we are currently overrun by greedy people who have disconnected from their emotions and succumbed to the mind-virus known as Money which makes you numb and blind. Maybe we can reform the system in time or maybe the free market will solve all our problems or maybe rich people actually taste really good, don’t knock it ‘til you try it.
