The Silver Screen Vs Reality: The Casablanca Conflict | Magnificent Megacities: Casablanca | Spark

- Casablanca is a city of love, drama, and passion. A city just like the Hollywood film, even though not a single scene was shot there. Today, two worlds clash, tradition, and globalization. The name Casablanca invokes images of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, but the modern reality is completely different.

As a Northern European boy I lived in Casablanca in my younger years with my family from 1975 to 1981. For me and my family it was sure some of the nicest memories in my life as a youngster. Back then it was innocent safe and nice. Very nice people, very nice food and culture. Beautiful country as well. Stunning scenery and nature specially with the beeches and of course the Atlas Mountains close to Marrakech.
Bien sur
Morocco is definitely on my list to visit. Cities are so beautiful and vibrant mixture of different cultures and traditions
Please do go, it's a fabulous country, I went to work in Agadir for 6 months, then moved to Casablanca where I stayed for 4 more years.

The commentary is very wrong:
1. Women don't have to go to mosque it's their choice but definitely not banned from mosque as the commentator says.
2. The public baths are not only for men. There are baths also for women.
3. The documentary is a waste of time. It is not about the city and the people ...it is completely focused to obsession about gender differences that it implies discrimination by default.
4. He said women are allowed now to participate in competition... completely untrue...must research sports.history of Arab and Muslim women dating back as far as 1930's .
Agreed i visited Casa Blanca and as a non moslime i was allowed to see the inside of a mosque. And i went to a hammam for woman it was fantastic. Love from Amsterdam.
Awesome observations! Thank you, the commentator spoiled the documentary.
I agree
As-salaam alaikum ahellooo, why is there no crescent moon on top of the Mosque's spire, please? Thanks. :)
@Lol Rofl Swapping "religions", but to what end? Your beliefs are at best folklore; following them is naive.
I believe the "moron" is actually you!
You need to find solace in something? Why can't you survive using your own intelligence instead of attributing it to some mythical being? I am my own person, I do not need a god to be good.
As a tourist, I prefer Chefchauhen, rabatt, Marakesh, Fez with a lot more intresting history + more colorful.
Inside the Casablanca restaurant ( from the movie ) It's actually very small, you Can go to the bar For drinks but must Have dinner reservation, it plays the movie on a constant loop For tourist

@morpheu there are no values against people who don't follow Islam in Morocco, Morocco were a land of Muslims and Jews before Israel took them out... and yes the narrator was trying hard to mention males and females and headscarves even tho it's not a topic to discuss in Morocco, everyone is free to do whatever he want... yes there still some problems but Morocco is the most open-minded Muslim and Arab country you can find.

Men! How beautiful and moving city is Casablanca. Two things I had observed is 1. Thier original cultures and traditions looks swiped by the french and it might be difficult to get it in town in the future. 2. The contrast between the poor and the rich is imaginable. Today it seems a city for all peoples of diverse income. Unless their government intervene the poor will go poorer while the rich gets richer.
It’s the government intervention that is deepening the gap between the rich and poor, especially when you have a dictatorship Monarchie as a system of governance imposed by colonial France through the Treaty of Fes.
Despite the errors in editing, this video was enjoyable and showed some different faces of Morocco that is commonly portrayed at least here in the USA. Since most of the visuals about Muslims and Islamic countries is played in the most negative possible in my country, it is indeed refreshing to see an inventor and creative genius, a Vespa club, a surfing competition, and how the hamman stay hot. People seem to like dissing it from the comments below, but I saw this a positive video on a beautiful city.
That is exactly right Tim Murphy. Casablanca in the '70s and '80s was even more open, more moderate, more tolerant, more cosmopolitan with French and Moroccan spoken fluently. You couldn't tell the difference between a certain urban class from their French counterparts. This country has deep Mediterranean roots, history, and civilization. It bears reminding that it is not S.A. or Iran.
The 1982 Bertie Higgins song must be a staple of the karaoke scene there I'd think.
All I know is I love the people, crafts, and food♥️♥️♥️♥️

Why are people mad ? It’s an accurate and even magnified representation of Casablanca. Speaking as someone who used to go there two months a year for 16 years and who has a mother born and raised there.
Some are not accurate like saying islamic tradition as arab tradition but l don't know why people are mad
Wrong statement:" Arab tradition" has nothing to do with Islam practice. it's like saying European tradition means going to Church which is 100 % false.since most europeans are atheists or non praticing and christianity comes from the middle east not europe. anywho Casablanca is a great City i'm from Rabat " The Capital" which is also a lovely clean city aka "The city of Lights". Marrakesh aka" The Red City", Fes , Chaouen aka " The Blue City" , Tetouan , Agadir Tangier also beautiful cities.
I agree with you man, I'm from Sénégal and muslim, people need to stop relating islam and arab, islam is universal. Some great muslim conqueror were persian such as Salman Faris...
Thanks for saying this
@@animationmasterstudies2118 You got the wrong idea . Arabs will always be related to Islam since the prophet of Islam was Arab Mpbu.and Islam comes from Arabian land like it or hate it it’s just a fact . Don’t try to turn this into an ethnic war since we know in Senegal that blacks don’t like Arab senegalese take your hate somewhere else . Islam is one thing , tribal traditions are another whether Arab or something else . Don’t hate it’s a cancer .
@hdidane00 dear, I spent four years in Morocco, a beautiful country.
You are the only one being hateful here.
Arabs are people who speak Arabic as a native language and identify themselves as Arabs; Muslims are those who practice the religion of Islam. Many Arabs are not Muslims, and not all Muslims are Arabs. More than a billion people in the world are Muslims, but fewer than 15 percent of Muslims worldwide are Arabs.
Understandably every prophet came with book of his language. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't apply to other nations.
The Quran states that clearly. In one verse God says “ We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures.” So no. Mohamed Pbuh was sent to all mankind. Regardless of race, faith and geographical location.
@hdidane00 also Islam means “Submission to God” anybody submit his will to God he/she will call as a muslim & follower of religion islam. So first person to submit his will to God was Adam .
And Muhammad pbuh is not founder of islam but last messenger of God. All prophets submitted their will to Creator like Adam , Abraham , Moses , Jesus , Muhammad peace be upon them All.
Now Quran is in arabic it doesnt mean it is only for arabs. God kept Quran in Original language to keep it from any type of interpolation or corruption. And thats the reason today almost 15+ millions memorized the Quran word to word .
And We have not sent you but as a mercy to [all] the worlds."
"And We have not sent you except comprehensively to mankind, as a bringer of good tidings and a warner, but most of the people do not know."
Islam is meant for all people regardless of race, nationality, cultural or religious background. From the commencement of his mission, the Prophet's companions came from a wide range of lands and races. Among them was an African, a Byzantine, a Persian and a Jewish scholar. All were united in the brotherhood of faith.
There are many references in the Qur‟an to the universal nature of Islam. It frequently addresses humanity, saying, "O mankind" or "O people." The Prophet, his companions and their followers made every effort to spread the message of truth to all nations and peoples. He naturally began the propagation of God's message among his own people, the Arabs, but that does not mean it was restricted to them - rather, only that initially conveying it to those nearest him was the logical first step toward the realization of a long term goal. Later in his mission when conditions became more favorable he sent letters of invitation to Islam to the rulers of Byzantium, Persia, Abyssinia, Egypt, Damascus, Bahrain, Yamamah, Oman and others who represented the influential world figures of the day. Whatever their response to it, the Prophet's message was fully acknowledged by the major powers of his time.

Muslim prayer is an 'arab tradition'. lolz!
@nykl mail1 The 'Arab tradition' was to worship idols and kill each other in tribal tit for tat warfare. Islam came to end the days of jahiliyah. All the anbia and moursalin prayed before Arabs even existed. Salat is just the continuation and perfection of the deen that Allah swa has revealed to all the messengers.

Opinions that we heard in this video are personal opinions, not everything reflected the religion that they practice..
for example at 9:35, this lady is saying that just because you are Muslim, that doesn't mean you cant surf..
That is true, Islam doesn't prohibit surfing.
But you do the activities is what matter.
But being her self, not covering her body completely according to the religion requirement.
and at same time give such statement, could lead to false understanding of that religion.
Islam doesn't allowed a woman to lose her hijab just because for sport or any related activities..
The rule's still apply, but the way (of doing activities) could be improve so that it is more to the religion requirements.
