    Selkie Lyrics:
    --------------------------------------------------------
Onshore is where he waited for he was captivated by a woman in sealskin
When she was bathing in the morning light, he asked her "would you be my wife?"
She said the ocean is where I belong, with me you cannot come along
She swam away and kindly waved "So long, so long"
    And he said
Selkie, please come along with me
Selkie, please come along with me
Onshore is where he waited for he was captivated by a woman in sealskin
Months turned into years, oh, his longing felt severe
Until the day she came to land and shed her skin lying in the sand
He stole what he believed he earned and took her by the hand
    And he said
Selkie, now you belong to me
Selkie, now you belong to me
She took his hand and walked along, away from where she used to belong but left her heart there in the sea
Months turned into years, oh, her longing felt severe
Until the day she found her pelt and left without a farewell
She shifted back and swam away and disappeared into the ocean's sway
    And he cried
    Selkie, where are thee?
    Selkie, where are thee?
Upon a cliff, he waited for he was captivated by a woman in sealskin
Months turned into years, oh his longing felt severe
Waiting to steal back her pelt, why she left, he could not tell
He'd lost the one he never had and threw himself off the cliff and fell
    And he screamed
Selkie, I'll join you in the sea
Selkie, I'll join you in the sea

‘Selkie' is the most story-telling song of our upcoming album and so we felt like it needed a story-telling video to go along with it. It’s the third single off ‘The Cause of Shipwreck’, which will be out on April 23! Don't forget to let us know what you think by leaving a comment

      @AdamBreez
Have you read or heard any of the Selkie stories? Most selkies go "willingly" because they literally have no other choice. The man stole their one and only means of returning home, they literally cannot leave, that's the point. The men trap the selkies on land with them and then force said selkie to marry them. And the selkie does because, what else are they gonna do? Run away? To where? And with what money?
So in these stories the selkie almost always submits completely to the man, becoming completely dependent because the man stole the physical form of their independence. That's why as soon as they get their coat back they bail.
I'll ask again, if a person did this to another human, would it not be a crime?
Also music is art and art is subjective. If you find a deeper non literal meaning, good for you. But to me this is a literal story about a literal fairy. Not a metaphor.

Well there is the one little redeeming part where she takes his hand. She just missed home. I do wish there had been a line or two about them talking on the shore before he asked her to marry him so it didn't feel quite so rapey or shallow, but I think it was meant to be consensual... though perhaps she was the one lured in at first. She knew she shouldn't, but she did, and it ended in tragedy. I don't understand why he felt he earned the skin. There wasn't a romance period. He didn't do anything but see her and ask her to marry him right off the bat.

I definitely understand the theme. Eppie Morie, Step It Out Mary, and to a degree Raggle Taggle Gypsy have this sort of basic idea of the maiden being treated like property without a will of her own. Love the song and the summerized version of the tale it gives. In the longer version, the selkie after leaving the man visits him in his dreams and warns him to not go looking for her nor bring harm to her husband and children. Later the man plots revenge and hunts down the very ones the selkie told him to stay away from. This enrages the selkie, and she lays a curse on the man and the island. The curse she lays starts with the man throwing himself from the cliffs, and continues on with more men falling from the cliffs until their bodies can form a hand-in-hand chain that encircles the island.

In Norse and Celtic mythology, selkies (also spelled silkies, sylkies, selchies) or selkie folk (Scots: selkie fowk) meaning "seal folk"[a] are mythological beings capable of therianthropy, changing from seal to human form by shedding their skin. They are found in folktales and mythology originating from the Northern Isles of Scotland.
The folk-tales frequently revolve around female selkies being coerced into relationships with humans by someone stealing and hiding their sealskin, thus exhibiting the tale motif of the swan maiden type.
There are counterparts in Faroese and Icelandic folklore that speak of seal-women and seal-skin.

Someone in my family must have been a selkie, because I am drawn to the sea as so. There must be a sealskin hidden someplace that belonged to my ancestor, when I find it, I will return to my true home.

This reminds me of one of my favourite Swedish fairy tales, The Swan Maiden. It's essentially the same story, but instead of a seal the maiden landed on a beach in the form of a swan. Also, in that version the man doesn't kill himself, but just withers and dies within a year after his wife regains her freedom.

Zora does seem to do really good water themed music. I was saying last week that I would love to see Blackbriar perform at an aquarium near me. (They did a seal release about a month ago) The aquarium is also near a seaport for old ships (Mostly whaling ships I think) which would be very appropriate for "The Cause of Shipwreck"

Reminds me of the Chinese (I think it was Chinese...?) Folktale about a man who stole the "wings" of a "fairy" woman and made her marry him. When she found her "wings" she went back to the heavens with their child. He then finds a way to get to heaven to get his child back (idk if he got her too I read this story a long time ago)

    • @reniesulaweyo4383
      @reniesulaweyo4383 2 роки тому +8

Yes it's a common motive in northern Europe and east Asia. I think the East Asian pedant are often translated as heavenly faerie or similar. Their garment is normally a sort of wings and their palace is in the sky. Examples are oxherd and weaver or the crane wife. Selkie is northern Europe and usually has a seal skin. Not sure if they have palaces, not in the tellings I know. They are clearly related as stories and I am sure other places have their own unique versions of the story! :)

Korea has such a story too. In there, the woman is one of the maids of the king-in-the-sky, and the man is a woodcutter, and the wings are her magic clothes. Quite fascinated to see something here and there.

He has to be extremely daft to not come to a possible idea.
He stole something that belonged to her, something that was extremely important to her, and practically forced her to be with him.
    Quite daft.

Men can be that way, particularly when they think they're in love. In this case, I think the guy confuses his desire for the selkie and love for her, hence his actions. She already belongs to the sea, hence her actions. He clearly does desire her strongly, hence his rather idiotic action at the end.

@ xKINGxOFxDONsxit could be worse! If you want to hear the most annoying song of all, go to LICH KING on UA-cam & see their "Livestream" about a 6th album that turns into an April Fool's joke!
The Stream took 4 hours altho the real content was over in less than 5.
Not sure WTH was the wait for the stream to go song, but everyone made up lyrics for it, like "Get your teeth back" for the beginning part that kept looping over & over ad nauseum!
If Zora sees this, feel free to check it out, it is kind of funny & would be better if your band could make it into a real song!!
Maybe throw some blast beats or something to spice it up a lot!! Lol
