  • Are you looking for tips on how to potty train your puppy? First off, we use the words house training and potty training interchangeably. To us they both mean the same thing, teaching your dog to potty outside rather than in the house!
In this video Matt Covey, the founder of Suburban K9 discusses how to potty train a puppy and gives you tips and strategies that actually work! Suburban K9 has helped tens of thousands of clients potty train their dogs since 2006 and our potty training tips will definitely help you potty train your dog fast!
The first thing you should do when potty training a puppy is create a potty log. This allows you to track your successes and accidents and then create an action plan to get your puppy potty trained fast. We find that many accidents happen at specific times of the day and the potty log can show you patterns with your dog's potty accidents.
Once the potty log has been created you should create a customized schedule to make sure you are letting your puppy out at the right times and using the crate appropriately. If you know your puppy needs to pee or poop and they haven't gone, you should either watch them extremely closely or use the crate until you can take them outside again.
What do you do if your puppy goes to the bathroom inside the house? Should you correct them for potty accidents? How do you praise your puppy when they go to the bathroom outside? All of this is covered in detail in the video.
Keep in mind that you need to watch your dog at all times! In order to successfully potty train your puppy, you should strive to have 0 unseen accidents! Some accidents are fine as long as we catch our dogs in the act! If you can not watch them, especially during times they owe you one, we recommend utilizing an appropriately sized crate. Some clients have used the tethering method, but that is not our most common recommendation. Through time, you can trust your puppy more, but make them earn that trust!
Another potty training tip is to have some water and food limitations. First off, you need to make sure you are not over or under feeding and watering your dogs. Always consult a vet to determine what is the right amount of food and water. Water and food should be put up before longer days away from home or bed. We generally recommend giving them their last food 4 hours before bed, and their last water 2 hours before bed. The goal there is to make sure they completely release their bladder to prevent them having accidents overnight or waking you up! Once a dog becomes potty trained, these rules don't matter as much!

Great info though I would avoid using the word “No” because it is used far too much in day to day life. I prefer a unique sound to correct. We use is “Eh!Eh!” And because it is unique, our dogs respond immediately. Same with ‘okay’ to break a command. Again it is used far too much in daily life.
Also remember you are talking to a wide audience. One mistake I made was not using a pee-pad for my little chihuahua . Our winters can have bitterly cold days, -30’C to -40’C. It is much safer for a chihuahua to use a pee pad then go outdoors even if well bundled up.
Happy you are using positive training methods. Looking forward to checking your other videos!
