Lux used to open our freezer as seen above. She would try to get any fish she could get her paws on. Her favorite was salmon! We had to use all kinds of methods to keep the freezer door shut. This clip, and more on Lux were on an episode of Animal Planets Bad Dog.

@@RuudiiiNot necessarily. Don’t underestimate cats. Even if she did in this video (which can’t be proven) cats can still open refrigerator doors. There is plenty of other evidence elsewhere. I have had cats my whole life and many of them were smart like this. One of them used to open the door all the time. He also used to get into the cupboards to get his cat treats.
@kirk1968 I know I am late replying but hmm, I think for a cat it’s more like, “Ok good so you got this on film. Just so we all know, this is what I am doing. I’m getting food from your frozen box and there’s nothing you’re going to do about it.” Cats don’t ask permission. 😂

my cat once got the fridge part open and went inside for the night- he smashed the eggs and his black fur got all over everything, he ate the cheese and leftovers on a plate, and he spilled the milk. All this had dried onto the inside of the fridge so I knew he hadnt just arrived. He was quite happy with himself, and didnt seem phased by the cold at all, he would have been happy to chill a while longer with his munchies- i bought child locks after that!

My cat once took a screwdriver and opened the fridge from the backside till like everything came apart and then took some dinner leftovers, ate it and then put the whole damn fridge back together again. I figured it out days after because there was cathair on the inside.

Seems like the cat had some help opening the freezer door while the bottom of the handle is out of the frame
The cat isn't actually opening the door herself, the camera operator is opening it for her. You can tell the way the camera moves towards the fridge before the door opens. When it does open, the cat is standing in a position that provides no leverage for actually opening it herself.
Noticed that the door seal seemed awfully loose ... Regardless of who opened it, she figured out how to find and extract the snack! No human help there!

This is great. I was a little worried though that the cat would get frostbite on her paws or her tongue, the longer she stayed in the freezer. She was clearly determined to not leave empty-handed! - LOL.

AP's "Bad Dog" and cute as it is this behavior would scare the hell out of me bc they can suffocate quickly in a closed fridge/freezer. I would either padlock it or get rid of it entirely bc what kitty is doing while cute is not safe and cats especially can die very quickly. Their little systems are very fragile.
Thanks so much for the advice. Fortunately, we moved out of that apartment and the refrigerator that we have now does NOT open that easily. Lux can no longer perform this trick, but she still loves her salmon. :)
wrong a cat could open it from the inside.....cats are not fragile.....their is enough air in there with the air mixing with coolant constantly.

We allways have to lock the fridge before leaving the house or sleeping at night. Otherwise my cat would have opened the fridge and sort everything out what could be interesting for her, including the opening by scratching the packages.

They figure things out.. One of mine has a technique for opening the cat door to keep from getting his nose scratched or worse. He first taps the door a couple of times then pushes it slightly open with his paw and looks out the sides. Only when it is clear does he bump it with his head and go through.

While working a business, where i met with people in their homes, i would piss off cat owners.
Because, no mater how spoiled their cat is; me, a stranger, can just say things like. "awww who's a 'poor' kitty... what'sa mater kitty... they don't looove you? they don't treat you like the special kitty YOU are?"
When done,, in just the right concerned and admiring tone of voice, EVERY time i would get answered by soft pitiful mews and a cat, on my lap, purring and purring in agreement to how awful they are treated.
So sorry guys. Cat owner fact; no mater how much we treat them like royalty, they never think it is enough. And given the opportunity they WILL sing the blues to the traveling Notary.
And given the opportunity they WILL open their freezer to get their fish & act like you should be helping.
