I feel like the magnum’s have some inherent drawbacks that makes the late roller cam LA motors the best. The fact the magnums don’t have oiling drilled for LA style heads really limits cylinder head choices and intake manifold options. The magnum heads are decent but have heavy intake port intrusion from the pushrod holes.
The 318 with cam & heads is a good 380 Horsepower screamer . The 360 is a good Torque daily driver with maybe 300 horsepower..Depends what you want it for..
@@michaelhurley545 I generally would not dump the $$$ into a 318 but I do understand they may be the last of whats left as buildable cores in 2024. They built alot of LAs and Magnums. I think dollar for dollar,if I couldnt find a 360,Id consider a B engine 383 again for the money spent etc.
My son races a single 4 barrel 40 over 318 9.0 compression 340 six pack cam 360 j heads Does 10.20 in a 94 jeep cherokee it is an LA. Two years without a teardown I gave him the parts he put it together.
Interesting. I sold my LA 318 in May last year its in a 49 Plymouth mated to an A 904. This engine is all stock except for the cam and the fella I sold it to is running the Carter 2 barrel. Thats all it needs with stock heads.😄
I'd go for the 318, even though... source means you need to teardown/inspect. So you're out a set of gaskets, but consider it insurance, and you know for sure what clearances are when you fire it up. The 360 eats gas and... might as well be a 383.
my guess is MrSwinger1 you do not know about the 85-89 roller cam 318 and 360 LA Mopar engines. and the A38 318 4 bbl police engines got a better flowing head.
Yes you would be right. I never owned an 80s 318. I am aware of the roller LA engines and police 318 but never had one apart etc. in the late 80s I owned a 69 Dodge coronet with a LA 318 was a neat car a 2 door hardtop I honestly didn't like any 80s dodge offerings except for maybe the trucks and Ramcharger. My 80s V8 now is a Ford 5.0 HO in a Fox Body...I am neither proud nor ashamed LOL! I am working on a 340 LA now and I may buiild a 5.0 HO but after that it safe to say Im done ... I had my fun.Its actually getting expensive playing with these cars I was telling a friend who just finished his 68 Camaro "were the last to restore these cars our generation (GenX) is it..." :)
I don't know why anyone would even buy and build a small block and not make a stroker engine. Hell same with big block mopar stroke everything. Besides the initial cost of parts for rotating assembly the machine work is the same and most likely youd have to put money into the 50 year old parts anyways to get them back in good order .
I hear alot of "318 is great with Nitrous". I don't know much about Nitrous but the lower compression makes sense if you are running the juice. I seem to recall 70's smog 360's were low compression also so I'd think the same logic applies to the 70's 360 with nitrous. a early 70s 360 had an 8.8 to 1 compression ratio, I do believe the 318 was the same comp ratio. 318 has its followers but I like the larger bore, larger ports when it comes to performance the 318 just hits a wall at some point very quickly.
Ive been hearing the 318 is pretty bulletproof...I ran one in my Dart for a few years...I have never ran a 360,I had one back in the day but sold it...
@@MrSwinger1 you did right I've had several vehicles with a 318 in them and stock they scat and hold up. Got a 99 ran sport last year and motor instantly went toast so I threw in another 360 granted its a used motor but my 318 with a quarter of a million miles had more power than the 360 I have now
Lol, that's really a crock of shit. There's absolutely no way you can legitimately say they spin up faster or they hold up better. That's just what you heard. I do work with engines on dynos and your not going to find any difference in revving up. Don't post fake news.
I seem to remember the engine didnt sell, and the seller was offering up the parts seperately which usually will bring in the desired price the seller wants.
I had suspected with all the 318 hype thats going around that people would start thinking they are gold. I beleive this one is a 5.2 Magnum truck engine and this is the first 4 thousand dollar 5.2 build I've seen I stumbled upon it searching Mopar parts on Craigslist LOL!
That’s a no brainer. The 360 always. 318 for $4200 is ridiculous! No 318 is worth buying imo. The 360 will always be the better option. It’s a night and day difference between the two. I don’t know how people have to think about this. I will go as far to say that even a 273 is a better option than a 318. It’s like a 305 vs. 350 or 307 Olds vs. 350 Olds. Whenever you have to buy an engine, especially for performance, you always go for the one that has more hp or the potential to make more horsepower. In the case of a 318 vs a 360 every hot rodder will pick the 360 10 out of 10 times.
I agree. There is a list of good parts there, but no mention of horsepower or warranty. You are also right about the 273. The solid lifter " Commando" version was a early High Performance engine.
@Driver Thats what’s up! Any car guy will pick a 360 or 360 magnum over a 318 any day and twice on Sundays. It’s a no brainer. It’s like washing your car in the rain. It’s just not done.
@Driver I think the seller just has too much into it, then realized they want something else. I was a young guy started with a 318, but then found a 340 car local and picked it up while they were still affordable. I'd even say cheap LOL! But point is people learn if they want to. I figure the seller found out about 360 or even an LS maybe LOL!
Aluminum heads forged pistons forged crank balanced aluminum intake where don't you see $4200 ? The other motors are pretty much reman stockers give your head a shake
I agree. I suspect this person bit onto the hype over COVID built it up , realized they want something else. Like a 5.9/360 LOL! I was there as a young man. I started with a 318 in a 69 Coronet. Learned a little more, ended up with a 340 A body car.
That 360 is a stupid buy at that price considering it's just a stock truck engine with an LA timing cover. The aluminum headed 318 is the best deal at 4200 unless you don't care about making any power and you can make 300 horse by grabbing a junkyard 360 Magnum and sticking a carburetor on it.
The heads are over 2k dude. The cheap engine has cheap heads What is the question here ??? Craigslist ad also states better than factory internals. You're not comparing apples to apples

Respectable street grunt cams have 200-210 In. and 210-221 Ex duration. She's a grocery getter and not much else. Should be good mpg if there ever was a Mopar with good mpg.
Yes,except that its not. If Chrysler could have used the 318 block they would have. They wouldnt have spent money on tooling to recast the 340/360 block if they didnt have to.
