I think what makes Danielle pitiable but untrustworthy is, if taken at face value, she’s a classic example of someone being a victim of manipulation, guilt and abuse, and being too invested/scared/manipulated to feel she can leave the situation, and she becomes an abuser herself by condoning things she knows is wrong. She can’t (or won’t) leave, but has learned her husband’s abusive tactics and sometimes tries to manipulate him and the other women emotionally. She wants control, she wants her family back, but if she really loved herself and had ant confidence in herself she would willingly remove herself from the situation. I think Garrick has convinced her she needs him, and so she stays and takes it. She is stripped of self-confidence.
It feels like she is a victim of abuse but also that she wants to hold onto any sense of control when it comes to the other people. She wants to manipulate other women as she has been manipulated. Just my personal observations🤷♀️ Also, it bothers me so much when they bring Jesus into it without ever following the words of Jesus🤦♀️ Just admit that you're doing what you want. Stop trying to bring God into it!! He uses the name of God for his own selfishness and it's disgusting.
As a fellow Christian, I sadly think it’s in great deal to them being Christians that Garrick managed to get where he got. Danielle is very very religious so she probably thinks she needs a man in her life to submit to and have a family like the Old Testament says. That makes it easier to Garrick for manipulate her into staying as he is a God fearing man who GOD TOLD TO BE POLYGAMOUS (despite the same Bible he always uses for support being absolutely against polyamorous relationships). That and the kids probably keep her from pulling the trigger on the relationship.

My whole perception of this is that Leah and Roberta were the ones who knew what polygamy relationships (specially Leah that had dated in the community before) and believed in/wanted the concept of a family of that sort. If you watch the full show, you can see that she really does believe in plural relationships and she tried so hard, she learned so much english and always tried to bring Danielle in when Garrett would leave her out. I think the saddest part is watching Bert being mistreated, and Danielle not standing up for her or even acknowledging any mistreatment because she herself has decided to endure similar mistreatment. Nobody deserves to feel left out, lied to, or devalued, especially in their intimate relationships. Danielle stayed through all of these infringements from Garrick, and so she's lost her sympathy for Bert when she expresses pain for going through the same thing. I believe that women are supposed to advocate and protect and stand up for each other. I think it hits close to home because I've seen similar things in real life- I had a neighbor who was about 30, in an abusive on again/off again relationship. He cheated on her. He broke her window after an argument. They would fight every night... Her brother and his girlfriend (the girlfriend was I think 22 or so, the brother was about 25) moved in for a while. I would hear the brother and his girlfriend arguing after he hit her... see him throw her keys off the back porch so that she couldn't leave... hear her crying in the hallway after she tried to leave him, just for him to talk her back into coming upstairs... And, my neighbors advice to this young girl after the fights was basically, just... yeah, he's in the wrong (but there's no further accountability other than just saying that) or, be quiet before someone calls the cops... I wish I could tell them both directly that neither of them have to go through this in their relationships... Physical, emotional, and mental abuse should never be normalized, and it's so sad to see it happen anyway.
This feels so suspicious. Garrick cried EVERY SINGLE TIME he had to leave after seeing Roberta and now he's suddenly numb? He also isn't even saying very cruel things about Roberta considering she took 10k and bailed. Exactly. $9800 at once is pretty much just under the reporting threshold. $10K is a major form, but there's also a form for "suspicious activity" if it looks like you're intentionally sending less to avoid reporting. The banks will also hold up funds or attempt to talk you out of the transfer when it's going overseas. So there's likely a history of smaller transfers, and it worked up to the final $9800. She did scam them.. but they deserved it. I'm also not certain it actually started out that way. She may have been legitimately interested until she realized what she was actually dealing with, then decided to at least cash in.

(Disclaimer: idk what Danielle said to trashtalk Roberta like the above commenter alluded to so take my words with that in mind) I think someone like her would have a hard time letting themselves leave their husband, so I have a bit of pity (and frustration) for her on that. Religious people on that level take marriage SUPER seriously, and she's probably been told all her life that you *have to* support your husband and keep the family together at all costs. She could likely be looked down on or shamed by family and community if she didn't. (Though the extended family does disapprove of Garricks antics, so I'm not sure how much they would hold her to that?) Even if she doesn't get shamed, she may very well be viewed by herself and others as "damaged goods" or "chewed gum", so she might believe she won't be able to remarry a godly man if she leaves him. Those are some possible factors I can think of anyway, depending on what the rest of her religious community is like. What I've seen suggests that their religion's adherence to "family values" is pretty rigid. It would make sense if that fosters (and enforces) a cognitive dissonance on her part, or at least something like that.

I believe that women are supposed to advocate and protect and stand up for each other. I think it hits close to home because I've seen similar things in real life- I had a neighbor who was about 30, in an abusive on again/off again relationship. He cheated on her. He broke her window after an argument. They would fight every night...
Her brother and his girlfriend (the girlfriend was I think 22 or so, the brother was about 25) moved in for a while. I would hear the brother and his girlfriend arguing after he hit her... see him throw her keys off the back porch so that she couldn't leave... hear her crying in the hallway after she tried to leave him, just for him to talk her back into coming upstairs...
And, my neighbors advice to this young girl after the fights was basically, just... yeah, he's in the wrong (but there's no further accountability other than just saying that) or, be quiet before someone calls the cops... I wish I could tell them both directly that neither of them have to go through this in their relationships... Physical, emotional, and mental abuse should never be normalized, and it's so sad to see it happen anyway.

Exactly. $9800 at once is pretty much just under the reporting threshold. $10K is a major form, but there's also a form for "suspicious activity" if it looks like you're intentionally sending less to avoid reporting. The banks will also hold up funds or attempt to talk you out of the transfer when it's going overseas. So there's likely a history of smaller transfers, and it worked up to the final $9800. She did scam them.. but they deserved it.
I'm also not certain it actually started out that way. She may have been legitimately interested until she realized what she was actually dealing with, then decided to at least cash in.

I think someone like her would have a hard time letting themselves leave their husband, so I have a bit of pity (and frustration) for her on that. Religious people on that level take marriage SUPER seriously, and she's probably been told all her life that you *have to* support your husband and keep the family together at all costs. She could likely be looked down on or shamed by family and community if she didn't. (Though the extended family does disapprove of Garricks antics, so I'm not sure how much they would hold her to that?) Even if she doesn't get shamed, she may very well be viewed by herself and others as "damaged goods" or "chewed gum", so she might believe she won't be able to remarry a godly man if she leaves him. Those are some possible factors I can think of anyway, depending on what the rest of her religious community is like. What I've seen suggests that their religion's adherence to "family values" is pretty rigid.
It would make sense if that fosters (and enforces) a cognitive dissonance on her part, or at least something like that.
