The club that sells the most football shirts in the world may surprise you. Despite clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona having established fans across the globe and a history of mega-stars in their ranks - it isn't them.
Bayern Munich come in at number 1 in the shirt selling rankings, with a whopping 3.4 million shirts sold in 2021. But how does a club in the Bundesliga attract so much popularity?
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes as Craig Silcock illustrates just why the Bavarian club have became so popular in recent years.

I think it's Real Madrid, followed by Bayern. The fact that they're both fan-owned clubs that can spend the revenue they generate is what makes them great. In that sense, I think Man United, if they come under the ownership of that Sheikh and his company, would actually see good results and costly players, but trophies might stay away.

The DFB Germany shirts are also the most sold ones amongst the national teams. The market for these jersey are extremely profitable. Some years ago Nike approached the DFB to be their kit provider laying a huge sum on the table. As far as I can remember they outbid Adidas by quite a margin. In the end the DFB still opted for Adidas since they have a really close relationship. Of course many raised the question how the DFB even could have considered Nike since Adidas is a huge sportswear brand from Germany. It makes sense from a Marketing point of view. Bayern Munich is well-run and internationally successful, arguably a top 3 Club worldwide and thus highly visible. They preserve a great deal of brand/club identity and care for stylish design of their products. Bavaria being the first thing that pops into mind when talking about Germany is an exaggeration. Plenty of people will think of Berlin and old Prussia more generally, lots will think of the financial districts in Frankfurt, plenty will think of the old industrial Ruhrland. Fairy tale castles aren't particularly associated with Bavaria; Hohenzollern castle is up near Berlin, Heidelberg is in Baden-Wuerttemberg and so on. It's a similar case for cars; Volkswagen is headquartered in Niedersachsen and both Mercedes and Porsche in Baden-Wuerttemberg

The reason why Real Madrid was even maintaining its success since 2001 is that the City of Madrid bought the training ground for 290 million pounds (in 2001). Which would probably equal around 1 billion (incl. inflation) in 2023. With taxpayer ‘s money to keep the club alive. Think about it.
Premier League clubs lives off big investment groups & billionaires for more than 20 years.
Bayern Munich is the only club that didn’t let big investors in (which control the club) and also didn’t participate in illegal practices (like Juventus Turin).
I’m by no means a Bayern Munich fanboy. But given their success in relation to their resources and the efficient management over decades, it’s the best team in the world. By far. It’s a self-made success story.

A little but important detail is that their alliance with Adidas gives Bayern the latest designs and technology, giving an extra appeal to their shirt.
Also their design is pretty flexible, which makes feel their shirt new every year and gives both the lifelong fan and the new one reasons to buy they new shirt. They can wear plain red, red with white stripes, vertical stripes one year and horizontal the next one, red with blue stripes..... Other popular clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool or Real Madrid would neve allow such radical changes in their beloved shirts.

I’m in Germany just about every summer and I try to always get a new shirt each season and when I’m in Rhineland Pfalz I have a lot of trouble finding anywhere that sells them. I did find a fan shop in Berlin but they closed that year (luckily was able to nab a Sane kit for €35). You can find them in the main airports and some apparel stores but that’s it. In North America the only place I’ve found a Bayern shirt is at the adidas store in NYC.

But you also have to consider that in Germany friendship or enmity between clubs plays a major role. And since the clubs also represent their city, you won't find Bayern jerseys in most big cities. Who in Dortmund, Stuttgart, Schalke, Mainz, Frankfurt should want a Bayern shirt. There are Bayern fans everywhere in Germany, but they just order it online. It just wouldn't be worth opening stores because there aren't enough in other cities.

I don't really care about the Bundesliga as I only support them for the Champions League, and even though they hadn't won the competition for many years prior to me buying the shirt, I always thought they will eventually win it again. Because people are fair weather fans. That’s why. When a team wins 10 in a row, every joker is a fan. I had never met a Manchester city fan before 2012, now people are either City or Chelsea fans. It is repulsive. Putting in a salary cap into football is a must to keep leagues more competitive.

@@Noah-ji1yi Not at all. I just don’t know a single person who likes a small team that doesn’t win. 15 years ago every clown liked Lyon, now those same jokers like PSG and claim they’ve been a fan since they were cream pies. It is disingenuous. I’ve suffered for years as a Spurs fan. It’s easy to be a Munich, Madrid, PSG, City, Porto, Ajax, Juventus, Inter, AC, Chelsea, United fan. Much more difficult to be a dortmund, arsenal, sporting Lisbon, Bilbao fan. I’ve only ever met one of those and he has been wearing arsenal kits and supported them since we were kids and they were just making top4.

@@AutopilotAndChill You say you suffer as a spurs fan and try to laugh about bayern barca and other big teams fans. Look at your stadium, your perspective to become one of those big clubs. You think you are so different from them supporting a team playing in the richest league? Bayern for example is run by their fans scince they will hold 51 % at the club. And the majority of bayern fans have been loyal. They are different because people identify with the family philosophy. When you visit the club, the training ground you feel part of it and the video explains the connections to the fanclubs.
That applies to all germany clubs as well. I am cologne supporter changing constantly between 1. and 2. division. There is almost no chance of seeing us against even your tottenham? So i could say its much more difficult to support cologne then tottenham, but i am not going to say that. We all see it from our perspectives. Fans come with success but also from a philosophy. Of course there will be plastic fans everywhere but you truly cant compare big Real, Barca, Bayern, Manu, Liverpool, AC, Inter with ManCity, they bought success and i give you that!
Dont get me wrong i agree with you that we need same conditions for everyone, but it should be possible for teams to work with their success money.
Fun fact: Bayern spends less money then half of the premier league clubs. the developed regional talents, like Lahm, Müller, Kimmich, Alaba and saw that robben wasnt really enjoyed by Real, They bought Ribery and Mandzukic and had a solid team since 2010. and Everytime Ribery wanted to leave Hoeneß and his wife invited him and his wife to their home. they also care for all the others if there is an issue with something. Its really not something impossible for teams like tottenham .You just need a good board, and there is no need to pay hundreds of millions of money for that.
What Mancity did for success was hiring pep, Liverpool hired Klopp and Manunited was sleeping. Thats why things are as they are. Believe me tottenham can do that too.

Most foreign fans pick their favourite team if it’s good atm. You won’t pick a poor club, especially if you’re a child. You touched the real problem a bit tho and that is jumping on a bandwagon every few years. I started to like Bayern in 2009, haven’t changed my mind since. What’s the problem with that?
