    I’ve always gone through a circle of - blend the edges because clouds are soft, now add contrast to create form, oops too much contrast looks like a rock better soften it, oh now it’s just a muddy blob, better add form, ahh too stiff, ahh too soft, AhaHhaAhHakkKkK😤! I am so excited to try your technique, it’s brilliant. Thank you for this video, I’m going to buy every lesson as soon as I can (they’re on my birthday list).

    Ahhh I'm so excited about this video! I tried my hand at painting clouds in gouache recently ( didn't look up any tutorials ) and it didn't quite work haha. This is so helpful! Definitely saving this for future viewing! You make it look so easy :D Love the camera set up you've got going on too, with the instant switch of angles :O

      Thanks Liz!! Yeah getting to this point with the clouds definitely wasnt intuitive, so hopefully you can skip out on the many things I tried that didn't work. And thanks about the setup, been working on that lately too ;) happy new year! What did you find hardest about your cloud painting?

      @@JustinDonaldsonArt I struggled most with getting it to look like an actual cloud! I had trouble with the edges, but you explained that so well in your video, I feel like I'll be a lot better with that when I try it again!

    First off, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial, Justin. I tried it and everything looked great except the edges (which is the crux of the technique haha). When "attacking" with white, I could not recreate the wave (but hear me out before you tell me I did not use enough water) and after a short while I started getting capillary strands everywhere, somewhat akin to the unwanted cauliflower effect in water colors. Now I don't know if I used too much water and if so at which stage or maybe the mediocre quality paper is to blame. Would love to hear your take on it.

    Would you also wet the paper if you are using a sketchbook for outdoor painting? Is the process similar?

    • @JustinDonaldsonArt

      If I wanted this effect 100% - you can do a lot with a brush full of water and a sketchbook 😅

    Hi Justin, I love your tutorial. They are so helpful! I’m actually having problem with creating the gradients for the sky. I guess I’m not very familiar with poster color. Do you use the color straight from the bottle or do you mix them with water first? Thank you!!

    • @JustinDonaldsonArt
      @JustinDonaldsonArt  4 роки тому +1

      Hey!! Thanks! I definitely mix first. The texture from the bottle is slightly different every day, ha. So if you can get in the habit of being aware of your water-paint ratio, and what the overall outcomes looks and feels like, that will take you a million miles. I will say, don't expect these gradients to come easy at first. They are a pretty technical skills, but one worth pursuing. You got this 💪

  • @EL_Newman
    @EL_Newman 4 роки тому +2

    Thanks for the tutorial! I have come across an issue. When I try to lift the sky color with water, the paper starts to disintegrate😭 Is this due to wrong paper? (If so what paper is best for gouache? I’m guessing thick paper.) Or maybe I should wait till It dries?

    • @JustinDonaldsonArt
      @JustinDonaldsonArt  4 роки тому +2

      I'd probably reevaluate the paper you are using for sure. I like to use something like a 200-300gsm paper, where you really have to try hard to destroy the paper at all. Hot press will provide a little more stability for smooth gradients, but honestly cold press would do perfectly well itself. Let me know if that helps at all, or if you are still running into problems after that attempt ☺️🌿

    • @EL_Newman
      @EL_Newman 4 роки тому

      @@JustinDonaldsonArt Thanks! Yeah i think i used a low GSM paper. Im trying out all my sketch books right now, but i think they are all normal sketch books. I'll probably have to buy some higher GSM paper.

    • @Jayariee
      @Jayariee 4 роки тому +1

      @@EL_Newman if it's regular sketch paper you may need to leave that area for ur cloud white or use a very thin layer of paint to avoid having to lift

    Thank you, that was really helpful! Do you have any suggestions for painting fog/mist in front of mountains? I would imagine you could use a similar technique?

    • @JustinDonaldsonArt
      @JustinDonaldsonArt  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah for sure! You can definitely charge the mountains into the mist, or the other way around. You'd *probably* want to have a dry mountain silhouette, and get more wet as you approach the mist. I have a small video of mist in front of mountain here instagram.com/p/B6oEn9FDFKz/?igshid=up5sgcpxkqtw check it out and see if that helps.

    I've tried this about a gazillion times with both gouache and poster colors. It just won't turn out right at all. The paints become muddy and grainy, the paper gets all weird, the clouds don't even have a definite shape. Whhyyh

  • @ArtByEmilyHare

    Brilliant! Can this be done with watercolour?
    I also have to ask, your accent is very interesting, have you lived in different places in your life? There are some what sound like British sounds in some of the words, can't place it!

    • @JustinDonaldsonArt
      @JustinDonaldsonArt  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks!! It would be a little more complicated I imagine. And youd probably have to be charging the blue into a watered area at just the right moment in how wet it is. Or perhaps have everything else be watercolor and charging an opaque white into it. Hmm... Haha, I am Australian, but I've been in the states for about 9 years now, so it's a little confused ☺️🌿

    i recently bought gouache and had saved this video so i could try this technique, but it didnt quite work out. the white for the clouds just blended with the blue, became muddy and i got no soft edges. i really dont understand where i went wrong. maybe i should switch to poster paints? maybe gouache doesnt quite work like this?
