Heather Headley became Shug Avery and conveyed that spirit better than anyone. She was believable as an older Shug Avery than Jennifer Hudson. She received a Tony Award in 2000 and you can tell she knows how to act, sing and convey the ethos for you to believe she is the character.
Jennifer H can sing but she can’t speak the lines or embody the emotion truthfully. She was right that the production likely used her star power to sell tickets. The Tony voters rightfully overlooked her…
Every few months I circle back to these performances for catharsis and they always deliver. The tears flow each and every time just like they did on day one. Never got to see it during the run and I deeply regret it.
2:10 the pain on her face that she feels for celie is beautiful. she is really talented. she played this role like NO other. and did you see "too beautiful for words?" the way she used her body to tell that story was ah-mazing. she's perfect for the stage.
Right!! Her body tells the story of their underlying Love for each other.. When she belts, "The Color Purple!" My God, you could feel God using her to portray this character so beautifully..
2:19 is an actress accessing her BODY to bring forth honest emotion… you can’t fake that. It’s those small ticks that show the true ACTRESSES from just the singers…
Straight as I am, Heather would've got me, I see why Celie was obsessed.. She played the HELL out this role!! That, "God not a man at all!" Chills on top of chills.. I just can't stop watching this.. Love this song!!!
NOT ONE BAD NOTE... my goodness. Both these women would have won Tonys if Heather would have originated the role, not just Cynthia... they are a better fit together than both Jennifers IMO
I don't think anyone was going to take Renee Elise Goldsberry for supporting actress that year. But I imagine Heather would have at least scored a nom, unlike Hudson.
Of all 3 major adaptations of this work, this one - and especially the way Cynthia and Heather perform it - do the best job of capturing this theme from Alice Walker’s novel. The idea that believing in god has nothing to do with bible stories and men in the sky, but is feeling connected to everyone and everything in this world. We find god when we look inside, and our friends help us find the courage to do it. I think the Spielberg and Bazawule films both touched on this but not nearly as deeply or beautiful as it’s done here.
Ugh is it possible for Heather to be nominated for a tony at the 2017 award show or no because the show is over/she wasn't there long enough? I don't know how it works, but she so deserves one for this
Vaitb85 I disagree. JHud, while having an amazing voice, isn't the best actress, nor a great fit for this role besides for the singing (in my opinion) I think they should have went to Heather in the first place

I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out and then listened to Jhud in the cast recording! To be honest, I'd rather hear Ms Headley sing it like this in her range rather than what happened at the Dreamgirls concert with Ain't No Party. Heather sounds amazing here.
they are different voice types. J Hud is a (Dramatic) Soprano which J Holliday used to be. Now she has aged into a MezzoSoprano, which Heather is also.
Her acting is incredible.

I honestly think she would have been tony nominated if she was the original. J Hud was amazing vocally but she was missing this skill.
@@mrjcb91 I think she was just a bad fit for the character. There's just a sexuality and sensuousness to Shug, that doesn't come naturally to J-Hud
