I'm telling you this is the best scene in any movie I've ever seen. The detail that goes into it that most people would miss. And what a sweet thing to do for someone That never felt an ounce of value their entire life

+Darren--many people don't even realize the relationship between Shug and Miss Celie. Kudos to you and anybody else who actually read the book! Although the movie was beyond excellent, it did shy away from certain subject matter simply because it made mainstream America uncomfortable at that time. The Broadway version currently playing does not shy away from the relationship between the two women. For some who haven't read the book or picked up on clues in the movie it came as a bit of a shock. One woman behind me even gasped and got up and left during the performance I saw last night. SMH at such closed minded people.
Darren Curtis-Small But you also have to keep in mind that many great scenes in many movies end up on the cutting room floor. Not because they don't like the scenes, but because they couldn't fit in in, or felt it was redundant, went on too long, etc.
Just watched this film for the first time ever yesterday, and I was so taken aback by how beautiful it was. The women just... glowed. They shined. You women are so beautiful.
@@aces985 no they're not. I think when Shug was calling Celie "sister" and serenading to her, she was basically calling Celie her friend and telling her she's worthy of being noticed and being strong. In the book, they actually become lovers. The filmmakers didn't include that part of the story in the movie since they were already "pushing boundaries" as it is. Such a shame, since it adds so much more to the story. After this scene it's implied that something happened between Shug & Celie, as Celie says herself, "Shug like honey, and now I's just like a bee. I's follow her everywhere. Want to go where she go." Shug (besides Nettie) has been the only person to show her kindness and love.

Same here I was 7 and I even knew the meanings and felt them in my soul as a black female. It was the 80’s. We took my grandma to the movies to see it for her birthday. About 10-15 of us. One of the main memories I have of my grandma. coming from the deep south even a child could feel this in their soul especially a black child. That oppressive spirit is passed down unfortunately. The 80’s was a unique period just a few decades since civil rights but a new found freedom. The grandmas and pawpaws were still worn down from the past and we got to see it. We are in our 40’s now. This was the last thing my sister and I watched b4 she passed in 2001. I always come here to reflect. I feel like she speaks toe through this song. Rip TELA bug
My younger sister passed suddenly two years ago, and so many things in the relationships between women in this moving make me think of her. We think of them all the time because we love them so much, and just like Nettie was with Celie in her mind and heart the whole movie, they’re with us too 🫂💜
lol I am pretty sure Color Purple is officially a high school movie. A long with Glory and The Great Gatsby and some of the best american hollywood films
+Valarie Greene my brother actually named me...when I was born he was 6 and my parents used to sit down and watch this with my siblings. I'm truly blessed
This scene just makes me cry every time - after years of feeling like a nobody, that has nobody, Shug becomes her friend and her ally and sees her for the strong and great person Celie is.
I wasn't paying attention when they said it in "20 Feet from Stardom", I thought Tata was just singing "God Is Trying to Tell you something" to demonstrate her own voice. I didn't know they were saying she was actually singing voice for Shug Avery. Although for the record, Margaret Avery can sang!!! So I don't know why she wasn't allowed to actually sing in the movie
I watched The Color Purple for the first time last week and was blown away by this song. It had me tear up because of the message. Powerful song!!!! "I'm something, I hope you think that you're something to!" That line gets me every time!!!!! I feel like she singing to me. People keep your head up! We are stronger than our problems!
This movie - always stirred something in my soul. And this song - the way it is sung, the huge interplay between two seemingly different women - stupendous. Thank you for sharing
This scene in this movie which may I say this movie is phenomenal but this scene Shug her singing is just so Soulful and this is to me where she shows Whoopi that she appreciates her and the bond between those two is unbreakable at that point even Danny Glover shut his mouth and quit laughing
This is one of the best parts of this beautiful movie. The Color Purple has got to be one of the best movies ever. Great actors, great songs and music, and of course, great pictures. Whoopi, Oprah, and Dany Glover: amazing acting!!!
So uplifting. That's true sisterhood keeping our eyes on each other and making sure we are each doing alright. Wish I felt more of that in this busy isolated world of comparison, judgement and disconnection. Used to spend ages in the bathrooms of bars and nightclubs drunkenly encouraging, pep talking and complimenting other gals to give them a boost to their esteem. Hilarious, but I always wanted my 'sisters' to feel good and enjoy themselves along with me.
I’ve watched this film on and off for 20 years and it never fails to make me laugh and sob. A truly powerful film with some of the greatest actresses of the 20th century.
+H Boogie I know I hadn't either until I had my second daughter this past may and I found myself singing it to the girls at bedtime. It seems sweet, low and blueslike...oh and instead of singing 'low life' I sing 'low light'....and 'shake your shimy' I sing 'shake your pinky'
This is one of my most favorite parts of this movie. Love Love Love this song. And who doesn't love when Celie sticks her tongue out at the women at the end?!
The tables really turned; In the beginning she insulted Celie, called her names and by the end of the movie, Shug had become her Angel and they became so close! Can Never get tired of watching this movie!!!!!!!
I love these two comments for blatantly pointing out their romantic and sexual relationship 💀 I see a lot of people trying to casually not mention that part of the story
My sister and I watched this movie all the time when we were younger & still living at home. My mom always made sure we saw the classic movies of all time and this one one of them. This was the last thing my sister and I watched b4 she passed in 2001. I always come here to reflect. I feel like she speaks toe through this song. Rip TELA bug
My younger sister passed suddenly two years ago, and so many things in the relationships between women in this moving make me think of her. We think of them all the time because we love them so much, and just like Nettie was with Celie in her mind and heart the whole movie, they’re with us too 🫂💜
This movie should be required viewing
lol I am pretty sure Color Purple is officially a high school movie. A long with Glory and The Great Gatsby and some of the best american hollywood films
Named after this movie. Thanks Oprah Winfrey. Favorite movie ever and scene
I know lol. She played Sophia
+Valarie Greene my brother actually named me...when I was born he was 6 and my parents used to sit down and watch this with my siblings. I'm truly blessed
How adorable!!!
Sophia Sophia Sophia
This scene just makes me cry every time - after years of feeling like a nobody, that has nobody, Shug becomes her friend and her ally and sees her for the strong and great person Celie is.
2023 and I still love this song!
It surprises me that after all these years some people still don't know that the real singer behind this song is the one and only Ms. Tata Vega.
+Android she didn't actually write the script. she was just Sophia
+alexanderdiaz1 - I'm one of those people who didn't know it was her. Makes me love this even more. Thank you.
Margaret Avery was the life of the music in that film.
Sweet Cheekz she did sing the song that's her actually singing she just didn't write the song Ms. Tata Vega wrote the song and originally sang it
No one is gonna take "YOUR STUFF" away!
a cup of coffee beside me, listening this song ....awesome...💃🕺💃🕺💃
One of the best scenes in LIFE. THE GIFT OF GRATITUDE. THE GIFT OF PAYING IT FORWARD. THE GIFT OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. THE GIFT OF WOMAN EMPOWERMENT
if that woman sung like that to me I'd have the same reaction as celie lol
The song of my life. Can't listen without crying
Sweet, lovely Celie was loved more than she knew.
Tears never fail to burst forth at this moment...what soul...
I still randomly sing this song to myself till this day for whatever reason lol
So uplifting. That's true sisterhood keeping our eyes on each other and making sure we are each doing alright. Wish I felt more of that in this busy isolated world of comparison, judgement and disconnection. Used to spend ages in the bathrooms of bars and nightclubs drunkenly encouraging, pep talking and complimenting other gals to give them a boost to their esteem. Hilarious, but I always wanted my 'sisters' to feel good and enjoy themselves along with me.
They had a romantic relationship. That is not sisterhood.
@@Michelle-pn9xtyour probably to young to understand that scene it's so much deeper than that it wasn't romantic at all
I’ve watched this film on and off for 20 years and it never fails to make me laugh and sob. A truly powerful film with some of the greatest actresses of the 20th century.
She has always been my FAVORITE❤️❤️❤️ Ms. Avery!!!
This the one movie I will sit down and watch and I don't like no one to fool with me by far one of my favorite movies of all time
People sleep on how powerful these lyrics are 🙌🏾
The look from up under the cloche hat says so much. 😊❤
This is my favorite song in the entire movie. ❤❤❤
This movie has me balling all the way thru... so beautifully done.
I had to look this up because I'm singing this song to my daughter's as a lullaby right now. I think it's now in the night song rotation #iloveit
omg I was just singing these to my baby too lol
+Desiree Wall I know it's so perfect for a night time song and it has one of those old time messages, that will really make sense when they are grown.
+B-Sharp Diallo you are definitely right about that!
Wow that is so interesting, I never thought of it as a lullaby, but I guess it can be used for that purpose.
I watched this movie 7 times and ain’t haven’t gotten tired of it or loved it just as much as I loved it the last time I watched it
Nothing will ever be better than this version of the movie and song!!! ❤❤❤
Deserved an Oscar! Incredible performances all around.
This is one of my most favorite parts of this movie. Love Love Love this song.
And who doesn't love when Celie sticks her tongue out at the women at the end?!
Beautiful movie adaptation of a great story.
The tables really turned; In the beginning she insulted Celie, called her names and by the end of the movie, Shug had become her Angel and they became so close! Can Never get tired of watching this movie!!!!!!!
yea they was tipping and dipping with each other....lol
Oh they got close alright
I love these two comments for blatantly pointing out their romantic and sexual relationship 💀 I see a lot of people trying to casually not mention that part of the story
To ALL MY SISTAs u don't let NO MAN still yo stuff away
Okkkk soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooshake yo shimmy cause Sugaaaaaa is feeling fineeeeeeeeeeee
My sister and I watched this movie all the time when we were younger & still living at home. My mom always made sure we saw the classic movies of all time and this one one of them. In fact, my sister just sent me this link to remind me, it made me smile and tear up because we always sang this song when it would randomly pop in one of our heads :) Sigh. I'm so sentimental ♡ I love you Chay! Best sister ever.
I love you soooo much and I want you to always remember you are something and don't let anyone or anything stop you. You mean the world to me! Your little sister forevers I Shwuv to Wuv You wots!
~I was 15 when this movie came out, I loved it then & love it even more today....Because Sistas we are ALL beautiful!~
My sister.. I love my sister. She past last year, I still love her. This was our song back in the days. I still love her, cant understand why
Because love is real, love is mutual, and most importantly, love is shared.
Love this singer. I always remember all her songs at this movie. She has a most extraordinary way of singing that makes her unforgettable.
💖💕🌸
Co-written by Rod Temperton, the same guy who wrote "Thriller" "Boogie Nights" "The Grooveline" etc.
Wow, I never knew that. Rod Temperton is one of my favorite song writers of all time.
The Star of a Story. Didn't know that either. Thanks!
Still one of my favorite movie scenes of all time
🌹
Man, I know this song word for word like I listen to it every day. A classic.
Praise God, this is my favorite part of the movie, let's always make others feel good about themselves, kisses and be blessed.

This scene has never left my soul. Every woman should feel this way about each other.
My brother showed me this movie 🍿 I cry most way through great movie ❤❤
Always makes me tear up ffs 😰
I haven't seen my own baby sister since my parents kicked me out of the house. I was her best friend and she was mine until they bad mouthed me to her and rejected all my calls. This song really hits home for me. I hope anyone who has a sister calls and tells them how much they love them after hearing this song.
To All the Women that have little sister's under them it's your responsibility to see that they don't get hurt. I'm a father of five girls and pray that my children don't get taken Advantage of by any guy . Lord help these women of 2021 and beyond. 🙏✝️
Quincy Jones brought me here. I almost forgot how beautiful this song is👌🏾🇿🇦❤️
This is one of my favorite songs of all time ❤️🙏
This gets my soul every time. ❤
I love the way she keeps gently moving her hands out of her face so she can show off that beautiful smile
Nothing like it women value one another... pure sister hood & girl power.
