This is similar to Unplugged Layla. The original is Clapton's anguished love song to George Harrison's, at the time, wife. By the time Unplugged comes along he had married and divorced "Layla". Long way of saying the original is the absolute best. You get all the raw hurt.
100%... She's great in this, but I like the rage. That Fury of betrayal after a break up. Just unbridled anger screaming through your veins. She captured that feeling phenomenally in the original.
Jagged Little Pill is such a great album. There must have been something in the water in the 90s, because there was just an army of incredible women alternative singer/songwriters putting out amazing track after amazing track. Alanis, Fiona Apple, Liz Phair, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow... I could go on and on and still not list them all.
Fiona Apple, "Criminal" is a must if we're doing awesome women of the 90's reactions. And I can always go for "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman.... although I'm generally crushingly sad after listening to history repeat itself in that song.
Her live version of "Uninvited" is mesmerizing. She wrote it for the movie "City Of Angels". Also if you just added the studio version of this song to your Playlist, you will be captivated all over again. It is a much different, and more passionate delivery of the same words. Both are awesome.
THIS! I came here to write exactly this! I've always loved this original, as well as uninvited since the 90s. Then I heard this live, and her live with uninvited . 😮 literally mind blown🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 those notes she hits in uninvited though!. Also, fun fact, this is the only song I'll do at Karaoke 😆

While you are at it, you might as well go ahead and add that entire album to your playlist. It is FIRE!!!! Jagged Little Pill was a masterpiece of an album.
That song came out in June 1995! The first time I heard her I couldn't believe what she sang, from that very moment until today I continue to listen to her music, obviously maturing with her, her music and her voice clearly marked my youth and my adulthood!!
The interesting thing about Alanis is record companies tried to make her into a bubblegum teen pop star and she held out until she found a producer who was ok putting out the music she wanted with her own image. This was so crazy at that time to have this kickass Canadian girl sing about real emotions in such a raw way.
She had a Platinum Disco style album in Canada with her first album as a young teenager. Her second album she grew a little but her record company in Canada indeed wanted her to stay as a disco/pop queen'ete. She left them, got a new Record Album and up popped Jagged Little Pill.
Yep Maddona was smart enough to let Her brilliant writing shine . Making jagged little pill in the top ten biggest selling album In history & the only female on that list . So cheers to smart talented kick as lady's who said um no we going to do us thanks boys
This is the ultimate “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”, song. My friends and I had a ritual, when one of us had a break up that we would get together and belt out this song. Allanis is a phenomenal singer!
The most POWERFUL failed romance song I know. Alanis blasts out the hurt and anger we feel when cast off... And this is an acoustic version. Her voice here is so well-crafted and executed. Amazing performance.
I'd never heard this version, and at first I'm like....no. But then it really started to grow on me. Hearing her voice, and every nuance, not competing with the music, started to feel even more edgy. There's no place to hide in this one. Without the rock music, she sort of reminds me of Dolores O'Riordan.
Alanis was first on You Can't Do That On Television as a child actor. The original of this song was strong, heavy, full of angst - incredibly powerful. This is a much lower-key version! The song came out in 1995 and was every woman's anthem who's man left her for someone else. Also, fun fact - she played God in the movie, Dogma :D
@@wribit they both had nickelodeon shows. she was on you can't do that on television, and dave coulier had his own show out of control. i don't know anything about it beyond that, but given that it doesn't seem that strange
We Canadians are very proud to call Alanis one of our best gifts to the world of singer songwriters. She is phenomenal. Leaves a piece of herself in every song.
Alanis is a legend and she still kicks ass. I'll never forget being a teenager in the 90s when Jagged Little Pill dropped and blew everyone's minds. I love her so much
I was going through all kinds of relationship bs in the 90s when this came out. I remember blasting the cassette with the windows down and screaming along. Sometimes at a red light, other drivers would sing along. It was an absolute cultural moment of giving voice and vocabulary to unabashed feminine rage. Glorious.
Jagged Little Pill is probably the greatest album of any music genre. Not a single bad song on the album. In my mind, it's right up there with the greatest albums ever recorded of any music genre.
I still remember the summer of 1995 when the song came out. Alanis Morissette's "You Ought To Know" was not the like the bebop, girlie pop songs of the time. It was a raw and in your face F YOU to the cheater that left you high and dry. Alanis was a woman scorned who was not going to forgive and forget. As a singer, her body of work is excellent. You should listen to the original version of this song and her entire library of hits. Ironic is my favorite song of hers.
"Jagged Little Pill" is one of my favorite albums of all time. Alanis's voice is like no other. The original version is so much angrier and I was there for it (in the 90's). 👏👏👏
"And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it!" I knew that was going to get a big reaction from you. It's such a great line! Pure bitter poetry.
When that first album dropped I was a teenager with trauma to handle and was so frustrated. I finally felt understood and heard for the very first time in my life. I grew with Alanis and I have loved every step of the journey 🖤
That song and album Jagged Little Pill was a phenomena when it came out making Alanis an overnight sensation. Groundbreaking. If you're downloading the song, download the whole album, you won't be disappointed!
The Hidden Track off Jagged Little Pill, which is now called "Your House", is such an absolutely insane "I'm completely crazypants", but beautiful acapella song off that album. The lyrics..... ugh.... if anyone reading this don't remember it, go listen to it again now.
I believe it was 1994, and she was the instant queen of popular music. She was in good company as well, the Cranberries, Sheryl Crow, 4 non Blondes, and Jewel were all top 10 that year.
She wrote this song after Dave Coulier who play Joey in Full House left her. Love the anger in her voice. So many other great songs from the album that this came from as well. Met her once when doing security work at one of her concert. Such a nice lady
🇨🇦. 90s. Canadian genius. This song was 1st f bomb... Genius lyricist. I love all her stuff. Biggest female album...Huge 1st album, Jagged Little Pill.
She smashed all records and got all kind of awards with that LP. Amingly, she didn't make the top tear status and many people haven't heard of her. Yet it is possibly the pick of the '90s music, even Morissette PH got her name from this artist. :)
I find her most unique songs are: "Thank U" and "Hand In My Pocket" but she has quite a few great ones. "Hand it my pocket" is her most commercial song but it's still great.
This is my first time hearing this version. I like it. It expresses her hurt in that situation. The album version expresses her anger. Same song and lyrics, quite different messages.
Alanis Morissette's mid-90s album "Jagged Little Pill" was a disruptor in every sense of the word. Alanis was a teen pop singer in Canada who grew up, left that behind, and wrote these confessional anthems that resonated through the post-grunge music scene. She did an acoustic version of the album a while back, and now there's a Broadway musical using the songs called Jagged Little Pill. I suggest watching the original video or at least listening to the slbum version with all the backing music. Also listen to "You Learn", "Ironic", "Hand in My Pocket", "Head Over Feet", "Thanks U". and from the movie City of Angels, "Uninvited".
Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" is the biggest selling debut album of all time. It sold 18 million copies and spawned an incredible SIX number one singles. In the 90's when this album came out, it was EVERYWHERE.
Anthem is definitely the word. This version is beautiful and she sings like it's hurting. In the original it's fresh and she's still angry and the hurt comes out more as rage and indignation. It feels raw. This whole album felt so new and different. And i think still does, it holds up even all these years later.
My favorite of hers was a hidden track on her first album Jagged Little Pill. The name of the song is Your House. It's a capella and shows off her chops perfectly.
As usual, a great reaction. Alanis' Jagged Little Pill is considered by many to be a must listen to. If you have time please give it a listen and you will see why she took the industry by storm. I call it female empowerment with a little bit of venom. Congratulations on your impressive march to 100,000. I have been with you since you were on the march to 5,000. You have been the brightest spot in the reaction field any of us have seen in a long time. I know you have been doing this for 3 months now and you already have 890 reactions. Please be careful because all of us do not want to see you get burned out because all of us look forward to your next reaction. Please refer back to my comments on Morissette's "Rise Up" for my two suggestions on KZ Tandingan and Lara Fabian. Both of these have the potential effect of making you look into your camera with that what in the hell am I hearing stare that we all love. Also check out the stunning piece of art that is Ren doing "Hi Ren'. As always please BE WELL
I’ve never seen this version. It’s very acoustic. You need to hear the studio version. It really rocks and her anger comes out better. And yes her whole singing style is really unique. This song seemed like it was the first of its kind. A sort of anthem for women that have been tossed aside by men.
she split up with matt leblanc and was angry with him , theres more than one song on the album aimed at leblanc ...........so tossed aside by men aint issue .... she broke up with one guy! men is plural all men aint shit and learn ur history lol
@@slyzombie6166 sure was my friend , friends came out 1996 i think the album jagged little pill came out same time ish . thers like 3 songs she wrote about le blanc , i learnt this from a uk review program . she was rather salty about him moving on but that be life
When this came out in 97 think, the video sold me immediately,I went and got the album, and I swear, there is not a bad song on it,its a complete album, just so brilliant
I had to Google the year because you made me doubt my memory. LOL. It was 95, and I am old. Shit! I 100% agree that the album is a complete masterpiece. The hidden track at the end was just just as angst filled as this song. Forgiven was (and still is) the song that can make me cry a bit, having grown up in a Pentecostal cult that controlled nearly every aspect of our lives.
I love Alanis!!!!❤❤ When she first came to be I was her first listener!!..well I mighta been😉🤔😁 I was a dedicated listener & STILL play her songs to the day!
You have a beautiful voice. My wife and I grew up in the eighties. We remember this song playing for the first time in ‘95. I have owned the song since then, still, it was great to hear it through your eyes and ears.
From 1995 she had a purple patch for a number years - "You Oughta Know", "Hand in My Pocket", "Ironic", "You Learn", "All I Really Want", "Uninvited" and "Thank U". The Jagged Little Pill album delivered three US hit singles (six Canadian hit singles). I was introduced to her music when my daughter was a teenager and have enjoyed her music ever since. Her comedy update of "Ironic" with James Corden is quite fun - ua-cam.com/video/6GVJpOmaDyU/v-deo.html
I got to see her live in my early 20’s and would love to see her again! There’s something uniquely interpretive about her voice - like you said, she was weeping with the vocalizing she does toward the end of the track. She’s able to convey such a range of emotion in one song.
She performed that live version of the song from a place of hurt, which is how she had originally envisioned the lament. Her producers convinced her to speed up the tempo, which made the song sound much more aggressive and angry.
This song was an Anthem among women who were broken-hearted, recent breakups, etc. I once sent it to an ex bf after we broke up... mix tape style with just this song! lol Made me feel better anyway. A relationship just ended for me this morning and this reaction has inspired me to pull out this CD and crank up this song many times today. Therapy, music style!
Morissette Amon's father was a fan, so that's where her name originated. Same as with Billie Eilish, and Aerosmith - the performances on Howard's show are an interesting addition for someone already familiar with the original version. She was 21 in 1995 when this song came out, and that energetic version was impactful enough that she won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Add the original to your playlist.
Britt--this version is excellent BUT there are 2 that are even better...one is the original studio version with video AND the other is Alanis doing this live back in the day on the David Letterman show. BOTH of these are super rocking and super intense with full Rock band. You'd be blown away even more with both of those!
First - your vocals are a joy to hear. Complete adoration ---- that you are willing to run though genres , decades.... I have found, listening to music I dismissed, artists I blew past. with indifference.. that then going back and hearing it again and then reading about the story behind the story.... It is more than a book reread after live experience... it tis that plus all the periphery... the stories of are lives are often written in shadows. rooms of doubt. moments of unanticipated glory. We never know one another without sitting elbow to elbow, breaking bread.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but this song is supposedly about Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joey on "full House". She has never stated exactly who it was about, but Dave basically has said that unfortunately it was about him. What a breakup song! She's amazing
Great reaction Britt. I do have to agree with many here, you should definitely do the original. Completely different feel done with an anger both musically and vocally.
The studio/album version is better in MY opinion. Granted this version was pretty damn good. The version you will hear on the album, I feel has more angst. It also has Flea(RHCP) on bass and Dave Navarro(Jane's Addiction & RHCP alum) on guitar. I know at one time, she had Taylor Hawkins(R.I.P.) as her drummer. But I do not think/believe he worked on this track or album. Anyway, GREAT reaction and this album has MANY gems. Enjoy the Alanis rabbit hole! By the way, she's from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. As am I. 🙂
Alanis Morisette was one of the best solo artists around the mid 90s and even up towards the early 2000s. Just as amazing live as on record. She has other songs wich are iconic already too, like Ironic,Thank U and Hand In my pocket to name a few. I have several of her albums, wish i had them all. Alanis is solid!
You should listen to the original. She rocks it!
Absolutely! This version is great, but the original needs to be heard. When it hit in the 90’s, it was everywhere! She’s amazing. I had the opportunity to see her in 95 and I didn’t. It’s one of my regrets. She’s on my bucket list now to see live.

100%... She's great in this, but I like the rage. That Fury of betrayal after a break up. Just unbridled anger screaming through your veins. She captured that feeling phenomenally in the original.
In the original her singing almost feels primal and the album it came off of is one of the best ever, with so many good songs.
Yes, this song needs that anger to experience it properly.
Agreed. This is definitely not the original.
Absolutely. She's at her best when she can use her whole body to sing.
Think I read somewhere once that it was done in one take. Emotional, raw, angry. Just so good. Must listen to the OG recording!

Alanis is beyond amazing. A phenomenon, and this song is spectacular unplugged but it's not meant to be unplugged. This song is RAW.
Jagged Little Pill is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Pretty much every song was a massive hit that absolutely dominated the 90s.
Was it Matt Leblanc? I always heard it was Dave Coulier... I believe the sing she did about Matt Leblanc was Walk Away
@@slyzombie6166 sure was my friend , friends came out 1996 i think the album jagged little pill came out same time ish . thers like 3 songs she wrote about le blanc , i learnt this from a uk review program . she was rather salty about him moving on but that be life
@@slyzombie6166 jagged little pill is still to this day one of my fav albums
Her Unplugged is phenomenal. Too bad it has no HD realease until know afaik
Another excellent reaction, Miss Britt, thank you! More Alanis please! I really think you would enjoy her hit "Uninvited".
Ah,I knew it was somewhere around then ha,I'm old too now,I was young then, memory is going ha
I miss the hidden tracks
She is one of the most respectable female vocalists and songwriters EVER
You have easily became one of my favorite reactors. You kill it!
I love Alanis!!!!❤❤ When she first came to be I was her first listener!!..well I mighta been😉🤔😁 I was a dedicated listener & STILL play her songs to the day!
I didn't realize how good this rendition was.
There are no words to describe the power of her live performance!
Her voice is beautiful and isolated here, but the album version is sooo good....
I have to go listen to it now.
And now YOU know.
This woman is an amazing artist. Not just breakup songs, but she can make you weep!!!
Really hope this starts a Alanis wormhole. My first celebrity crush 😍 Still one of the best voices I've ever heard
whoa, interesting... i've never heard this song unplugged.
Wow, I loved this song in the 90's without really listening to it until now. Just WOW!!!
Britt's facial expression at some of these lyrics 🤌😂
The incredible emotion she releases in the original is overwhelming. He hurt her and she wants all of us to know her pain!
The album this is from is one of the best selling albums ever. It came out mid 90s. Incredible album start to finish 👍🏻
If you are unfamiliar with her, you need to listen to the studio version of this. I love some Alanis Morissette.
ALANIS MORISSETTE has an amazing vocal range! You gotta listen to "Uninvited" !!
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but this song is supposedly about Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joey on "full House". She has never stated exactly who it was about, but Dave basically has said that unfortunately it was about him. What a breakup song! She's amazing
I was reading all of the comments to find someone who finally mentioned this. He groomed this girl and then dropped her.
Wow, hadn't seen this version of this song. Whole different feel !! Thanks for the new find ! Always fun
I would love to see you react to the music video 😭
This song is about Dave Coulier, from the TV show FULL HOUSE. He freaked out a little bit when he found out he was the topic of her song.
Great reaction Britt. I do have to agree with many here, you should definitely do the original. Completely different feel done with an anger both musically and vocally.
And it is a righteous anger. Whoever she's aiming it at needs to run.
Britt now you've been Alanisized! Great reaction!
