Number of countries: 11
Fun fact! This year's singer for Monaco, Jacques Pills, was the father of Jacqueline Boyer who won the contest for France the next year in 1960!
And Jacqueline boyer was born in 1943
This esc laid the foundation for two traditions: Te Deum (Eurovision anthem) played with logo and the opening words "Good Evening Europe". Used for decades and decades to come :)

@@marikishtar5059 If people don't want spoilers for a music contest from 1959 then they shouldn't look at the comments until after they watch the show. That advice can also apply to the comment section on any video that shows a competition.

Those rotating stages though
This contest was held four weeks before I was born. I first watched the contest in 1968. It was so different in those days, much smaller venues, a live orchestra etc
Actual quality too.
I honestly think Eurovision needs live orchestras and live instrumentation! I can’t watch most of the entries because I see them faking an instrument and it just takes me right out of the music :( I also think Eurovision is far too focused on being modern nowadays. Why not embrace the past a little you know?
@@treverthetreemusic has changed alot over the years. They aren’t trying too make it too modern but it’s already up to date with the time there in. LED stages and bright lights. Also there not faking instruments. Further more live orchestra and instruments wouldn’t work with like all songs of this time. That’s why they don’t do them anymore
@@K.A.T6 Live instrumentation is banned. All instruments on stage ARE FAKED :(
@@treverthetree really? Dang
I didn't know that the 2nd place and 3rd place winners ever got to do a reprise at the end. I like it! 🥇🥈🥉
Only year that that ever happened, I think.

My favourite contest of the 50s.
Thank you for the publication of Eurovision songs , they are really precious.
¡Maravillosa edición! Presentar a los cantantes antes de comenzar la competición ya lo inventaron en Cannes, no en el XXI; el cambio de decorado, la presentadora tan simpática y natural, la orquesta... ¡que vuelva la música en directo! Me encanta. Gracias, נתי נתן
ciau ciau Bambina Dominico Modunjo Italia a big hit forever in all over Europe in the 60ties
Fun Fact: Jacques Pills (the man who represented Monaco) is the father of Jacqueline Boyer (winner France 1960)
Host: “Speak slowly please”
She sounded so aggressive as well. lol
Well, she had to remind a spokesperson earlier on in the voting(51:25). English would not be Jacqueline's first language. I think the double whammy caused her to flip

News Note 1:
Netherlands became the first country to win more than once.
News Note 2:
Teddy Scholten Became the 3rd Woman (Solo) To Win the Eurovision Song Contest.
Love it! So stylish.
Switzerland is my favourite. I must say, the song contest in 1959 was so much more classy and cultured than what we are forced to endure and tolerate these days.
The voting was really different than it is now
They now give 12 points to their favorite song
Italy had the best song that year by far. It became a huge hit round the world.

They are the best.
In those days, they had to sing the song in the native language.
Actually, the language rule didn't come into effect until 1966. It's just that nobody thought to sing in any language other than their own.
They didn't people just thought that countries would logically sing in their own languages but the frickin Swedes sang in English (in 1966) so they had to put the rule in place
@@rhysepoos Thank you for the information.
It was an unwritten rule until Sweden sang in English in 65
25:00 Just curious, does anyone know which ones Alice and which ones Ellen?
Difficult to believe Abba is only 15 years in the future. I feel that having three-digit number places on the scoreboard was optimistic, though thorough.
Jacqueline joubert was very beautiful.
Did you prefer her outfit from 1959 or 1961?

The United Kingdom were utterly robbed. Perhaps it was just a little too twee for the juries, but it stood out a mile for me. Netherlands is also a great song too
His singing was very shaky. She was trying to cover for him but he obviously thought he was good, and wasn't having any of it. Netherlands deserved it for her connection with the camera.
Agree, they should have won. Netherlands was also good, and imo deserved 2nd place. Their places should have been the opposite as they were
het aller beste dat belgie ooit heeft ingezonden
Why Grande-Bretagne and not UK?
Cause English is not the only language, dumbass
English wasn't a universal language back then. The show was hosted in its host country's language.
@@occono3543 I think that they mean why Britain (grande-Bretagne) not UK (royaume-uni) as in why did they leave out Northern Ireland?
