Sorry for the stupid question in advance but why should you never let go of the break rope?
I guess for breaking obviously but if the rope runs through without the grigri stoping it how would you stop it from the breaking rope? What should you do with it in a situation like that with the breaking end?

The grigri+ in lead mode also slips and does not catch if your are not holding the brake strand, from testing it requires around 5lbs of force on the brake strand to reliably catch, but your grip strength alone can put out much more than that.
I’m guessing there is not much reason for someone who’s used to using Grigri3 to switch to Grigri+? I’m wondering how useful the top rope mode is.
Top rope mode catches much easier and is alot more sensitive

This video communicates things in a way people can understand. However I have some criticism.
0:12 It might be fun to mention that it's an active assisted locking belay device. As there are passive assisted locking belay devices. It could have only taken a few seconds to educate everyone on this terminology.
1:00 An ATC is a brand. Black Diamonds "Air Traffic Controller." Technically it's called a tube style belay device, a tuber, or sometimes a passive belay device. You did kind of specify that though. So no big deal.
1:19 To open the device, you could also let the folks know that opening it means opening the side plate. Technically it's called the side plate.
1:55 "And the breaking device, down at the bottom." We all know you meant break hand instead of breaking device, but it's worth mentioning I think.
3:19 Same as what I said about 1:55 (above). You mean to say break strand, not break device. Your hand/the rope is not a break device, the device is.
8:57 Conflicting advice. Early in the video (0:58) you said to learn belaying on an ATC or tube style device, then at 9:01 you say that the new GriGri+ is good for learning belaying. While both are true in my opinion, it might confuse viewers because they were just told completely conflicting pieces of advice. (then again at 9:38)
Why is over half of this video talking about the GriGri2? Only about 1 minute of this video is about a GriGri+. As a viewer, I'd expect it to be a breakdown of the GriGri+ because, well, the title. Also the title was poorly chosen, I think. It literally says GriGri + NEW GriGri+. It seems redundant. You could have made the title "GriGri and NEW GriGri+. You didn't even mention that you are using a GriGri2 in the title, so old school folks might think you are talking about an original GriGri and the new GriGri+. Think about it.
Individually, all of my criticisms are pretty lame. You get the point across and that's what matters. But all of the little things together make me feel like you could do just a little better to be more accurate with what is said. Pay attention to each word, as people watching are trying to get educated a little. And goobers like me are sometimes keen to point out every little mistake.

You come to someone's video to tell them how to film their video... stfu no one cares about what YOU want him to say in his video. The reason it talks mainly about the grigri2 is that the plus is the same mf'ing device and he just covers the 2 extra features.
Any idea when they'll start producing left handed ones?

What bugs me about the grigri+ is that in the old grigri (especially when it's been used a lot) pulling the lever only unlocked the device and it didn't actually control the speed of the lowering. I pretty much just pull it all the way back and control the rope with my breaking hand, and it works fine. And I've seen many people doing it that way, because the lever doesn't really control the decent at all. Maybe in a brand new grigri1 it actually does make a difference, I wouldn't know. It just seems that this new feature in the grigri+ will be more annoying when lowering than really helping. I would have to try it out first.
Milla Cabral grigri 2 and plus does control speed. you need to be more gentle that's all.. It's like a degrees difference. also remember to pull the brake rope back

Milla Cabral save your bucks and get a grigri2 if you operate an original grigri with proficiency. grigri+ antilock kicks in too easily on fuzzy gym ropes

I find the panic handle activates too early for most indoor gym ropes. I have encountered several situations where it was impossible to lower the climber at all.

JingMin Teo just got one and was messing with it at home and thought it seemed like it activated way too easily. may be going back to gri2
Same here - I thought investing in the GriGri + would be worth the enhancements of safety, but honestly is a major issue when climbers are too light and the safety catch hits almost automatically. ALSO, the button to switch between top-rope and lead climb is HORRENDOUS! My opinion, stick with the GriGri 2.
If you pull furthermore after the panic handle blocked, you can actually give rope again, without any more safetyblocking. This is made for especially this situations, when climers are too light.

Yes, it also slips in lead mode if you dont hold the brake strand
Love the teaching style :) sometimes a bit freestyle and in those free moments, be careful with the contradictory advice. Never let go of the brake rope, but keeps letting go or sliding your hand freely which I'd say is the same thing and could be fatal with a traditional belay device, the type you first said a novice should learn with, then go on to suggest they buy a new grigri plus. Hopefully taken as constructive feedback. Hold on to your encouraging energy and smiles :)
Question.. I do saddle hunting. In saddle hunting you often have your hands off the rope completely. I have been using a kong duck. Are you aware of a rope grab that will make it to where I can take my hands off the rope safely?? I have a 8mm rope as of now
just tie a saftey knot as a backup, ive hung off my grigri+ without one (in a home anchor 2' off the ground) but i would never do it any higher than that
Nice I like the teaching how to jug up the rope I didn't think we did that but yet it is a technique that people should know because it can be done.
Hi great video would you have special advice for a link for people looking at using a GriGri for tree climbing?
The grigri plus is supposedly meant to have smoother lowering compared with a grigri 2. Is this actually noticeable? I find the grigri 2 offers limited fine grain control for the lowering speed and often end up lowering fairly slowly as a result of this.

you have to use a flat screwdriver, and press white "plastic thingy" at the switch from the top side. That unlocks the switcher

It works and ive done it, but it only can take single strand ropes so forget that nice double rope action with the ATC

and how when you pull after the grigri + locks out...... it will still lower the rope through. Anti-panic working to a t there petzl XD
Alex McMullan no. after it locks, you need to unlock it by letting go back to it's rest position which will take you back to pulling from the start.
DERPENBERG when it locks, keep pulling and the rope will still feed

Your taking in incorrectly you should take in on a Grigri the same way you do on a normal plate sliding your hand up the rope is letting go... Im an instructor at and indoor wall and you would be pulled up for belaying that way.
I agree. I don't think he was attempting to teach the toprope belay method...but as a creator, him showing the process of taking in slack, whether teaching or not, should always be done correctly to show beginners (who might be watching this video) proper technique, even if it's not the forefront of the video.

ahh I was wondering that, I was taught to step one hand over the other when taking the slack through the device and to have at least one hand gripping the brake rope at all times
Shuffling is not incorrect. You can do at your indoor wall what you want but it has no implications for the real world or what real climbers and alpine clubs deem to be correct.

I have the feeling that the quality standards of the show went tremendously down in the last months, it's really a pity! I can see that the fact climbing is becoming more and more mainstream leads to demand for more "generalistic" videos, but this should not happen at the expense of quality...!

The only thing that changes is the way you load the rope and lower, your standard PBUS will still work fine

at 5:00, he does let it go. ;-) And a few seconds later he says to NEVER EVER EVER let go of the brake hand. (i know, there isn't an actual climber at the other end, but still...) Instructional videos should be very rigorous.
Best use: Toss your Petzl gear in the bin and get some good climbing gear. Getting worse each and every year, but at least it's overpriced! ha.
