"Ringleaders faced war crime trials"? Ha! Unit 731 was run by General Ishii and Emperor Hirohito's nephew. Both walked. No charges, because Ishii traded medical test data for his freedom, and the emperor's family was untouchable.
If the Allies had executed the Imperial Family for their atrocities we'd have to have ethnically cleansed the Japanese and their entire culture just to end the revolts and imsurgencies that would follow.
And USA got the records of unit 731...they also dont mention the Japanese A-bomb research and how close to building a bomb they actually were. Lucky air strike by USA.
The reason the emperor got to walk free was because of cultural reasons. The U.S. realized that it was easier to leave them in place than to take them down and try to set up something new. That said, those close to the emperor did get put on trial for it so it’s not like the cabinet members didn’t get away

Nuking was mainly a show of power to intimidate the Soviet Union, not to crush Japan who already lost the war. It should be said that A) conventional bombings have taken more lives of Japanese civilians than both nukes, and B) Japan would only surrender when Soviet Army kicked them out of mainland Asia, and started preparations for invasion of Japan.
@@user-co3uc8vt7e because there’s no possible way that Japan’s surrender resulted from a combination of the two (A-bombs and Russian invasion). I’m sure the Japanese shrugged off the bombs like they were no big deal right?

Fair point here, but remember - Hiroshima alone wasn't enough to make them consider surrendering.
I took a genocide studies course last semester, and we actually covered Nanjing/Nanking. There were so many war crimes committed that it’s not even funny. Diplomats in the area at the time tried to provide safe zones for the citizens of Nanjing/Nanking, but even that didn’t stop the Japanese. I’m surprised that this isn’t included during/leading up to WW2 in history/socials 10.

Unit 731 was run by General Ishii and Emperor Hirohito's nephew. Both walked. No charges, because Ishii traded medical test data for his freedom, and the emperor's family was untouchable.
the imperial family part is a conspiracy theory made in the 00s by a chinese newspaper, based on an fake history paper made in the 50s.
