They took one of the French Atlantic ports... I can't remember which one... And when the German garrison finally surrendered, pretty much the only buildings left standing in the town were the U-boat pens. The French would try demolishing them after the war, and failed. So they're still standing to this day.
The port itself was a wreck and unusable, taking months to clear. After that bloody experience, they decided it was a waste of time trying to capture those ports so they just left them penned up and moved on.

    • @kellyshistory306

Hitler didn't care, he even said it at the end in the bunker. 'The German people have proved weak and deserved to be wiped out', that was his Darwinian world view that only the strong race survived, that is why he initiated the "Nero Decree". As far as he was concerned, there was no future for Germany after he was gone, because they have proved weak and deserved to perish as nature intended. Why not fight the war to the end and gamble on things like the Ardennes, it didn't matter to him if he lost in May 1945 or August 1945, he was dead either way and he may as well go down fighting as long as the German people were willing to die for him and his regime.

    Great Video!
At Berlin, the Germans simply had no chance against an enemy force made up of 2,300,000 soldiers, 6,250 tanks, 7,500 aircraft and 41,600 artillery pieces. Only Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front (Первый Белоруссий Фронт), for example, was twice the size of Heinrici's Army Group Vistula!
Note: I'm not counting with Marshall Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front. Adding to Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front (Первый Украинский Фронт), the Russian forces reached the triple or quadruple the size of the German forces. Altogether, Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front had 10 HUGE armies: General Chuikov's 8th Guards Army, Kuznetsov's 3rd Shock Army, Bogdanov's 2nd Guards Tank Army, Katukov's 1st Guards Tank Army, Berzarin's 5th Shock Army, Perkhorovich's 47th Army, Belov's 61st Army, Tsvetayev's 33rd Army, Kolpakchi's 69th Army and Stanisław Popławski's 1st Polish Army.
The Germans, on the other hand, had only 3 reduced and exhausted armies: the 3rd Panzer Army, the 4th Panzer Army and the 9th Army.
General Heinrici's Army Group Vistula, the main German formation at Berlin, did not even have 5% of the original contingent of Bock's Army Group Center in June 1941! After Operation Bagration, Army Group Center, which was once the largest German formation of the ENTIRE WAR, was completely annihilated (including 28 ENTIRE divisions)! In April 1945, in turn, the situation was even worse!
