I think Japan would have won if not for China. The main reason Japan lost the war was that it started a war with US, and the reason for the war with US was the oil shortage caused by US's oil export restrictions. Without the Sino-Japanese war, Japan would have been able to control Southeast Asia earlier than in historical fact, and if that had happened, the oil shortage would have been resolved and there would be no reason for Japan to go to war with US. And this would affect the war between Germany and the USSR.

Even after the Soviet invasion and second bombing, Japan was unwilling to surrender unconditionally. Their original terms had been:
      * The Emperor remains in power.
      * No foreign occupation of Japan, Korea or Formosa (Taiwan).
      * Self administration of disarmament.
      * Self administration of war crimes accusations.
After Nagasaki, the Emperor ordered a surrender offered on only the first term. That was rejected and followed by a leaflets dropped from bombers, informing the Japanese people of the atomic bombings, the surrender negotiations and the demand for unconditional surrender. It also threatened more nuclear strikes if Japan did not surrender. At that point, members of the Big Six basically told the Emperor that if Japan did not surrender immediately, he was likely to be face either a popular rebellion (demanding surrender) or a military coup (to halt the negotiations).
As to the casualties of the bomb, it is worth keeping in mind the situation on the mainland. The Japanese occupation of Asia was incredibly brutal, and in 1945 it ramped up to new levels. On average, 20,000 civilians were executed and another 80,000 died due to conditions imposed by the occupation every week. A two week delay in the end of the occupation (and ability to deliver relief) would have resulted in as many civilian deaths as the bombs (more if the bombs were taken off the table and Hiroshima released as a firebombing target). Plans for an invasion estimated the Japanese would resist for several months.

My grandfather, aged 16, alongside two of his brothers, 15 and 19, were conscripted in 1938 and fought through the war against Japan. His younger brother died from Japanese artillery during the battle of Wuhan; he said he couldn't find his body as the shell had just shattered him into pieces. By the end of the war, his older brother was already a company commander.
They then participated in the following civil war, during which their units got separated during the campaign of Huaihai. The battalion of his older brother managed to break out of the Communists encirclement during their final retreat and eventually went to Taiwan with the ROC government. But my grandfather was captured and was then enlisted into the PLA straight away due to his age and experiences.
Grandfather later was sent to Korea as a part of the PVA during the Korean War in 1950. And that's where he lost his entire company of men and three of his fingers from frostbite. His older brother settled in Taiwan and pursued a career in the police force, in which he eventually became the deputy chief of the police of Taoyuan.
He and his brother were eventually reunited in 1987 after 38 years of separation as improved diplomatic relations between China and Taiwan opened a route for a large number of people who sought to visit their separated close relatives in mainland China after decades of separation. Sadly, their Mother passed away just a year before their reunification, that she wouldn't live to see her eldest son ever again since he left home in 1938.
Grandfather passed away in 2009. RIP 爷爷, his entire life was basically a chapter in Chinese history, a page that was filled with pain and despair, but yet with strength and resilience. Hope he is in a better place, now, reunited with all his brothers, beside his mum, in a world where there is no war and hunger.

Japan before the global economy and trade did not have a lot of natural resources, they were lacking in oil and steel.
Besides resources the Japanese army and navy were actually extremely divided and would actively sabotage each other and themselves and rarely cooperated for anything. They still did remarkably well on their own but it is part of the reason why the land invasion in China couldn't be sustained as the Navy straight up couldn't give a shit to send supplies by ships lmfao which meant their logistics is severely screwed.

China sounds to us like one entity but the government of the Republic of China was in an ever changing coalition with or against various Chinese warlords, a Red Chinese rebellion (that later took over as PRC) and a puppet Chinese regime with the same name and flag that was helping Japan. The starving of millions under Mao was a direct result of the US lead embargo against China and the Japanese had destroy their crops. A fact that was left out of the media's portrayal of the times. Remember China was a war torn country went through WW2 and Civil War, you don't understand what that is like until you live through it. So when the US put an embargo on China, it prevented food supplies from reaching China causing massive starvation. Today, US doesn't use embargos but they use Sanctions to achieve similar results, which is what is happening to Venezuela and why they are starving.
China was at one time facing embargo aka sanctions from US, thus millions of their citizens died during their period of massive famine as earlier in the civil war fields of harvest was burned and sabotaged by retreating KMT army (with backing of US), and later years US parked warships against Chinese ports hence no food or resources could be imported and their people faced massive deaths. Of course in US side of history they simply blame this on communism and mao's failure to run china they never bother to tell that they were the one that's caused these stumbling blocks that lead to the massive famine and then later massive death when no food could be imported.
It ain't communism that causes death to her own citizens cause it was US imperialism aka democracy that caused actual deaths that leads into millions. Nowadays you see china doing the one belt and one road project, it's because they don't want that massive famine and deaths to be repeated by US and it's warships in China sea.

    Found this worth sharing.
China’s resistance to Japan is one of the great untold stories of World War II. Though China was the first Allied power to fight the Axis, it has received far less credit for its role in the Pacific theater than the United States, Britain or even the Soviet Union, which only joined the war in Asia in August 1945. The Chinese contribution was pushed aside soon after the conflict, as an inconvenient story in the neat ideological narrative of the Cold War.
Though far weaker and poorer than the mighty United States or the British Empire, China played a major role in the war. Some 40,000 Chinese soldiers fought in Burma alongside American and British troops in 1944, helping to secure the Stilwell Road linking Lashio to Assam in India. In China itself, they held down some 800,000 Japanese soldiers.
The costs were great. At least 14 million Chinese were killed and some 80 million became refugees over the course of the war. The atrocities were many: the Rape of Nanking, in 1937, is the most notorious, but there were other, equally searing but less well-known, massacres: the bloody capture in 1938 of Xuzhou in the east, which threatened Chiang’s ability to control central China; the 1939 carpet bombing of Chongqing, the temporary capital, which killed more than 4,000 people in two days of air raids that a survivor described as “a sea of fire”; and the “three alls” campaign (“Burn all, loot all, kill all”) of 1941, which devastated the Communist-held areas in the north.
Maybe you will say “oh that’s all the contribution of China in the war? The US killed over 74% of all the Japanese forces during the war. It’s like comparing an elephant to a mouse.”
Well, don’t forget this was China’s naval forces during the war:
The Chinese navy in 1937, on the eve of the Japan Invasion only had Ping Hai and Ning Hai, two cruisers that were considered “powerful” and “modern” while the rest all consisted of gunboats. Ironically, these two sister ships, were designed and built by the Japanese navy. They were defeated by the IJN during the Japanese assault on Kiangyin Fortress, during the battle of Shanghai.
And don’t forget this was the army of China during the war:
But what did China gain from that contribution?
At the Yalta Conference in February 1945, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked for Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin’s participation in the Pacific War, and promised to recognize Soviet gains in Asia, which included military basing rights, a railroad across the Chinese northeast, and the “status quo” in Mongolia - by which Stalin meant its final separation from China. Chiang Kai-Shek was furious when he learned the terms in the agreement. China was not only not recognized as a great power of the world, but it was humiliated by the so-called allies. Chiang was reported to write down “It’s an insult; they really see China as their vassal” in his diary. There is an entire White Paper written on U.S.-Sino relations during 1918-1945, and F.D.R.’s blinder eye toward Chiang Kai-Shek’s persistent requests for aid.
During the civil war between KMT and CCP, the US keeps sending aids to both sides to balance out their powers and numbers so they could fight a longer war while the US benefited from the money made in military purchases. -Wendi Qiu
Side note: Japan invaded China in 1937 and brought World War II to the Far East and the pacific theaters. The US waited until 1941 to official send aids to help China after the bombing of the Pearl Harbor that took place in the same year and directly sent troops to China in 1945, a total 9 years after the invasion started.
China had been fighting the war longer than any other country, as well as the difference in the nature of the war for the Chinese from them: for the Chinese, it was a war to liberate their homeland from invading forces who had a larger number of modern weaponries and well-trained troops. The contribution of the Chinese to the pacific theater was immense, and was disproportionate to the recognition it gained at the end of the war.

Fuck America 🇺🇸 ㅗ .

Meanwhile, Yan Xishan turned from the governor of Shanxi under China to governor of Shanxi under Japan, and once Japan capitulated he recruited a huge number of Japanese troops to the nationalist Chinese side and fought with this army against Communist with more determination than Chiang-Kai-Shek until he was forced to retreat to Taiwan. There he became the de-facto leader and layed foundation for the modern Taiwan as an independent country/rebelious province (Depending on how you see them), since Chiang-Kai-Shek didn't care about the remnants of National army and simply stole the money reserve for himself. Then Chiang-Kai-Shek arrived to Taiwan and Yan Xishan instantly lost his position, and was forgotten to history by most. A man who always made the best decision for the small province he controlled, willing even to cooperate with the Japanese in order to keep it prosperous and neutral, and who achieved many successes in his governship of both Shanxi and Taiwan, earning the name of model governor for that previous achievement. Nowadays recognised by People's Republic of China as a governor who made correct decisions in stopping a plague that was spreading in Shanxi and into other regions of China.
