    There's an easy way to not cross-thread bolts that I learned after much pain: spin the bolt backwards until you hear a clicking sound, then start threading the bolt. The clicking is the end of the threads moving past each other so it usually aligns everything perfectly.
    This also works really well for re-inserting self tapping screws in a plastic housing, which have a tendency to cross thread.

    6:25 One good way to avoid cross-threading is to carefully "back off" the bolt (i.e., turn it gently counter-clockwise) till you feel it "drop down", which indicates that the bolt's threads are lined up properly with the nut or threaded sleeve. Then gingerly turn the bolt clockwise a short way to make sure it's threading into the hole properly before using a wrench. :D

    • @buckberthod5007
      @buckberthod5007 3 роки тому +5

      Or start it by hand then run it down with a ratchet

    • @Quacks0
      @Quacks0 3 роки тому +6

      @@buckberthod5007 Yes, that was generally what I'd meant. I'd merely been also making the point that you can still accidentally cross bolt-threads even if you start the bolt by hand (especially true if [1] you're inserting a hard-metal screw into a softer-bodied medium like plastic, aluminum, magnesium, wood, etc., or [2] you're using a fine-thread fastener/medium combination, or [3] you're using a fastener that has cutting-threads, and so it can damage the hole or nut more easily), so it's always best to "back it off" first (i.e., turn it gently counter-clockwise till you feel the bolt "drop down") to better ensure that you'll get the end of the bolt correctly started into the sleeve/nut-threads. :)

    Pro Tip: To prevent spilling when pouring from a new (full) container that has the spout on one side, turn it so that the spout is on the TOP (handle underneath). It's counterintuitive, but it works! That's because when you position the bottle that way, the top surface of the liquid is on top, where the spout is, and you have way better control. :-D
    Oh, and great video. Keep up the good work!

    • @Quacks0
      @Quacks0 2 роки тому

      Yes, I was just now gonna say that. Another way that sometimes works, too, is to hold the bottle's spout directly against the edge of the funnel, maybe with the bottle positioned sideways for more control. Or even better, you could either use a siphon-hose to remove the first few ounces from the full bottle, or simply get a smaller wide-mouth container --- like a plastic yogurt or sour cream tub --- and hold it up against the spout of the bottle, then slowly pour out some of the bottle's liquid into the container. Empty the container into your radiator, then simply "lather, rinse, repeat" as often as necessary to bring the level of the coolant in the bottle down enough so that it will pour cleanly into your funnel "directly", without having to use "intermediate" vessels like this. :D

    SO the method is the pouring hole for easy pouring is to be upper most for easy pouring, less likely to SPILL EVERYWHERE!!!
    So have the pouring on the high side of the bottle for a slow start so it doesn’t gush out.

Somehow it found antifreeze in my apt complex parking lot. We found the cat spewing spewing from both ends, and it plastered my new apt with poo. I took it back to the veterinarian the next day, but they could not save poor kitty Sebastian. I also got evicted for the party at my place, that I wasn't even in attendance to. @@madmex2k Probably because you removed them the same way you put them on. I have also never found cutting out shocks faster then using a proper wrench and a ratchet.

      Also...
      ...it appeared when mook was installing the right front shock that the steel grommet washer was installed upside down and the lower rubber grommet was not installed at all. I could be wrong as the video was a bit on the dark side.

    here's a trick to avoid cross threading bolts. put the bolt in the hole, and turn it counterclockwise(lefty loosey) until you feel the threads click, then turn it clockwise(righty tighty) to start the bolt by hand. the click is the start of the threads lining up. if you do that when you start a bolt, you will cross thread them a lot less often.

    The coolant jug slopping out and spilling is an easy fix. Put a small hole on the top of the handle. A piece of duct tape to seal for storage.

    As a teenager, I had an 81 Ram, 88 F150, 88 K5 Jimmy. Don't tell my 2014 Ram this, but the older trucks were much more fun to drive. My F150 was my favorite. It had a 302 and a 5 speed manual. Unfortunately our winters here in northwestern Ontario are hell on our vehicles. They turn to rust no matter how many times you oil guard them.

    If you are by yourself again use this tip. Put a jack stand under the frame and then jack up that beam axel remove the jack stand and slowly let it down, it will lower the axel beam and now you will have room to install the shock without having to compress it.

    For the coolant, When you pour from a jug or bottle hold it the other way so the opening is at the top, its easier to not spill cause it doesn't 'glug'

    Dont feel bad, I bought my 77 Holden Torana in 2014, intended to drive it until the rego ran out, drove it for a month, cruising down the freeway and the fibre cam gear on the old 173 6 cyl lost all its teeth bringing me to a gentle stop.
    Dragged it home and put it in the garage.......its currently stripped in epoxy primer awaiting final rust repairs before we do bodywork and paint....yep, nearly 7 years. Really cannot wait to get it back on the road finally....but with a nice injected Holden 5 litre V8 and 4L60E out of a 95 Holden VR Statesman. Little bit of work like cam, bit more compression etc. Can't wait!

    Your Idea to compress the shock with zip ties is actually very smart. I think I saw a hydraulic press in your shop...you can always use that to compress the shock and tighten your zip ties for future reference...just be careful how you rig it up to compress it.

    You put a 3mm, 1/8” bead of sealant on the gasket down the middle like on a head gasket and don’t touch it, as it spreads evenly as it squishes down without any air bubbles that cause air bubbles to expand to blowout the gasket…….👍
