Something like that would be almost impossible in Germany, at least not without the labor court imposing a heavy obligation on the employer in terms of compensation. The legal profession is always a bit complicated, but as a rule, there is always a 6-week protection against dismissal in cases of illness.
Even after 6 weeks, the employer will usually not dismiss you, but then the health insurance will take over the advance payment of wages, so that the employer is not burdened further. I used to have a serious motorcycle accident and couldn't work for 3 months and wasn't discharged, but was able to start again immediately after healing. In the meantime, I got my money from the health insurance company

I have been made redundant 4 times and I looked at it as an opportunity to do something else. I am happy with where I am now and that's what counts the most.

I feel so sorry for you 😔There is a German UA-camr ("Gewitter im Kopf") with Tourette's and he finally got deep brain stimulation and it is amazing what this procedure has done for him. You are strong enough to manage your life even after such bad news. I am 100% sure of that.
That sucks. I would still mabye have a chat with a lawyer as just the threat of legal action may get them to come to the table for a settlement of some sort - id be very suprised if them knowing you had medical leave didnt factor in somewhere.

Nate, not what I hoped to hear from you. I can't give advise, but my thoughts are with you. Hope your surgery will bring you what you hope for and you and your wife can make plans for the future and a better life.
I like the idea of a documentation before and after the surgery. There are people out there with the same issue and you might take a little bit fear off them. Fingers crossed for your surgery!

Well, if you ever plan to create your own merch, the "Stop working for a$$holes, start working for yourself!" should go on a t-shirt. Also like your "electrifiying" pictures, they should go onto something. Your best skill, to me at least is, that whatever live throws at you, you keep pushing through. Never lose that, it's an admirable trait.
Hi, Nate! 1st about the tremor: I realised mine at the age of 15, when I started to do some electronics. And when soldering, I realised my tremor. It's not the same everyday. The intesity is always changing. I stopped drinking coffee, some 15 years ago (63, by now). Coffes makes it worse. But not always: when I was with my wife (the lived in the US. So I was only able to spend my holidays with her) it was gone. I started drinking coffee again, when in the US.
6 mugs a day? No prob! Back here in Germany: sometimes it's really bad. I.e. I can't even roll a cigarette. But, that beeing said, it's obviously not as bad as you're actually facing. So: best of luck for a great result from that surgery!
2nd about the work: my dad learned the job of a fisherman in Hamburg. And went on and on. By the time I was born, he was the captain of the 11th largest ship in the world. A tanker, owned by a shipping company from New York. I was about 4 yrs of age. The way I recall it: his bags where packed for the next trip. The phone rang. It was the shipping company: "The ship has been sold. You're fired. Have a nice life".
Which company would offer a captain with his reputation a job? On what size of a ship? None.
He first worked as a vigil on ships in the Hamburg harbour.

First Video in quite a long time and then these news. That's not good, but let's do first things first. Get your surgery and then recover. Take your time and recover. After that, there's still time to get a new employment. Healing needs to be with a free mind. No worries about job. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, and look forward seeing more from you again. I have a destroyed back ,and worked at a wire factory after 2 surgeries I was laid off after I couldnt work their way. It was very physical so went on unemployment then needed my neck fused while on unemployment and it went fine. Just tell unemployment your situation right away. I ended up permanently disabled but they kept me eating. Be well.

We are use to employers rights, we have unions to help us out, much cheaper health care and very good social programs, all of which the US has non of.................feel so sorry for Americans who are raised to think they live in a FREE Country and that one day any of them can become President.

Well that sucks.. Im glad thats not a thing here in Europe, where you cant get fired for nothing, must be really stressfull to think about that you might get fired today, tomorrow or who knows when.. That cant be a good feeling. Anyways, good luck with the surgery!

Hi Nate! I like your honesty and the way you think and reason, it's interesting to listen to. I have watched some of your videos and I don't know enough of your situation, but isn't there some way you can search for jobs in Germany online and maybe make it there in the summer of 2024? You seem to belong there and I'm sure they would love to have you. I am not German but Scandinavian so I don't know enough to give you any advice on that, that you don't already know, but it just sounds like Germany will take care of you and respect you like your country should, especially when dealing with health issues and as an employee/citizen. They don't deserve to have you on whatever company that was! You deserve so much better! Come to Europe, you'd be so welcome! Wathever obstacle is in the way of the move, hopefully it can be resolved, maybe this is an opening? ❤

Brain surgery sounds shocking at first, but thanks to what you said, I have the feeling that it is a planned procedure to relieve your symptoms and could lead to an improvement in your health situation in the long term. Luckily it's not an emergency operation that might be worth panicking about. What worries me more is losing your job. It's not the case that employers in Germany don't cut jobs if orders are lost or parts of the company go bankrupt - but we have grace periods and there is government help to protect employees in these cases. The opposite of the hire and fire mentality in the USA. There might be the possibility of working part-time, despite your diagnosis, but for good money, in one of the logistics centers in Europe. This would offer you both an income and stable social security and the political situation in the USA would no longer put additional strain on you. Germany, for example, has eased the rules for taking up work since November 2023 and lowered the entitlements.

Hey Nate. That makes two of us. We had one of our company wide webcasts and they closed our entire facility without warning with a single powerpoint slide as if we were nothing. Well, there will be a social plan but I bet there wasnt if the company were able to just throw us into garbage. Its a weird feeling to be fired together with a few hundred colleagues. Same bs. Cost structure, cost cutting, leaner business blablabla and I also should have seen it coming as they told us we will get new projects for months. I spend all day having the same rant about how evil they are^^... It would be funny if it wasnt so serious... Anyway, just stay on your feet and youll be fine. This is a test

I am so glad I live in Europe and not the United States, the so called FREE Country.
Law-Suits can drag on and on, so I think your right about that............some people would say it may scare your Employer and bring them to the table, but they will have higher paid lawyers and a massive team that will fight tooth and nail to destroy you.
Please you are in no way any shape to take this type of challenge on, just live, get out of surgery and then think about it.

Yeah, sadly 49 states are like that about employment . I wouldn't call a lawyer because it was lawful. IF they fired you in the hospital then youd have grounds to sue in America. I know it sux starting over, but your art is fantastic! Have you opened an Etsy shop for your art?

There clearly seems to be a connection between your surgery and the sudden dismissal from work. How can someone treat people so badly? First of all, in Sweden it is illegal to fire someone because of sick leave, and it doesn't cost thousands of dollars for an operation either. Thanks to our tax system, an operation costs around 20 dollars and you get paid 80% of your salary when you are on sick leave. Welcome to Europe ❤
You didn't say what the diagnosis is. if it's Parkinson's disease, it' good that you have the surgery now, not later. Michael J. Fox hadn't got it when I last saw an interview with him, and he was already all over the place ;-(
If successful, the surgery will make you well in a day. You may not be allowed to perform brain surgery, but still.

I have Essential Tremor, so it's in the same family as Parkinson's but not as severe I would say. It's not a resting tremor, so I don't shake if I'm not doing anything.

That's not nice to hear. But perhaps it was a call for better things. What does your wife do? Was she a teacher? Teachers are needed . I can't remember exactly. But maybe you will find something (also you in your profession) in Germany. So why not draw a line now and get out of this slave country. It's unpleasant to hear how people are treated in the USA.
